What is RLS And How Can Soaking in a Hot Tub Help?

Soaking in a hot tub before bed or even during the day can ease the cramping and pains that are symptoms of  RLS. That is Restless Leg Syndrome. If you know have it, you typically know it. If you have these symptom repeatedly, though, check with your doctor.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that is characterized by the irresistible urge to move the legs.

While the name may sound funny, it is a very real disorder. In order for you to be officially diagnosed with RLS, you must meet the criteria described in the four bullets below:

  • You have a strong urge to move your legs which you may not be able to resist. The need to move is often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations. Some words used to describe these sensations include: creeping, itching, pulling, creepy-crawly, tugging, or gnawing.
  • Your RLS symptoms start or become worse when you are resting. The longer you are resting, the greater the chance the symptoms will occur and the more severe they are likely to be.
  • Your RLS symptoms get better when you move your legs. The relief can be complete or only partial but generally starts very soon after starting an activity. Relief persists as long as the motor activity continues.
  • Your RLS symptoms are worse in the evening especially when you are lying down. Activities that bother you at night do not bother you during the day.

RLS can also cause difficulty in falling or staying asleep which can be one of the chief complaints of the syndrome. A substantial number of people who have RLS also have periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS). These are jerks that occur every 20 to 30 seconds on and off throughout the night. This can cause partial awakenings that disrupt sleep. Sleep deprivation can seriously impact your work, relationships, and health.

How is it treated?

A regular exercise program may help restless legs. Reducing caffeinated drinks, alcohol use or smoking may also help. You may also reduce RLS by keeping mentally active while you are sitting down. When restless legs occurs, any of the following activities may help:

  • Walking
  • Riding an exercise bike
  • Massaging the legs
  • Soaking in a hot tub

Top 5 Tips for Happy Hot Tub Soaking By Using the Right Water Care Products

Follow these top 5 tips for a happy hot tub soaking experience by using the right water care products.
TIP #1: Use only chemical products specifically labeled for hot tubs and spas. Read the fine print on the label. Swimming pool chemicals should never be used to treat a spa or hot tub. Using pool chemicals can cause severe water problems related to pH and mineral content and have a long-term harmful effect on your spa equipment.

TIP#2: Avoid big box store chemicals including online chemical sellers with no local ties. Most big box stores offer both swimming pool and spa/hot tub chemicals. The problem with buying big box chemicals is that you don’t know what you are getting. One example I saw lately is a product sold in a box store for use in oxidizing hot tub water.  It turned out to be the same product as a swimming pool chemical just re-packaged! The problem with using this chemical in a spa/hot tub is that it can cause severe damage to the heater and is a dangerous product to use and handle. Much of what the big box stores sell comes from overseas and can contain contaminants, fillers and binders. Many of these fillers and binders can cause surface staining and have caused severe skin rashes on bathers. You don’t need to be a chemist when you buy spa chemicals made in America. You’ll have peace of mind, fewer problems AND protect your spa equipment.
TIP #3: Stick to the same brand for all chemical products for your hot tub.

Do not mix brands! Buy and use all spa products in the same brand family. This ensures that you are getting the same percentage, dosage and source chemicals consistently. Switching brands and buying strictly on price can lead to chemistry problems and damage to the spa. One example is clarifiers. There is a misconception that clarifiers should be used only when the water turns cloudy. Clarifiers will work to clear cloudy water, but the real purpose of a clarifier is to prevent water from becoming cloudy in the first place. Clarifiers should be used weekly. It doesn’t make a difference what type of clarifier is used for water quality as long as it’s a natural non-petroleum based clarifier. However, those who are environmentally conscious will purchase SeaKlear Spa Natural Clarifier which is eco-friendly and made from crab shells.
TIP #4: Hot tubs are NOT small swimming pools.

Read your owners’ manual so you’ll have an understanding of what’s involved in proper maintenance and care.
TIP #5: Trust your local spa professional and buy local, in other words the dealer who sold you the hot tub or spa. If your original dealer is out of business, look for a Hot Spring Spa dealer. They’re located all across the United States and they are likely to be the oldest hot tub dealer in your town or city. And, typically they’ve had years of experience and can help you understand the water in your tub and how best to care for it.  Of course, if you live in the Puget Sound area, come to Olympic Hot Tub Company for all of your water care products. We’ve 34 years of experience. Your goal should always be a crystal clear, clean water soaking experience.

Hot Tub Dry Skin is OVER Thanks to SilkBalance

I love it when our hot tub owners do balletic routines in the tub. Here’s an email from happy high kicker, Barb Apple.

To Alice at Olympic Hot Tub,

I am happy to share my experience with SilkBalance with you all.  Before I started using SilkBalance I was experiencing a continuous difficulty with dry skin.  Since using SilkBalance my skin is never dry even when I have spent 2 hours in my Hot Springs Hot Tub enjoying the conversation of friends.  SilkBalance has also totally eliminated the cloudy water issues I use to have frequently.  I am totally in LOVE with SilkBalance and feel it is well worth the extra cost.  It means I can enjoy my Hot Springs Spa even more.  Thanks SilkBalance!

Barb Apple

Thanks to Barb for writing about her experience with SilkBalance. She is just one of hundreds of Hot Spring owners who have made the switch to SilkBalance natural water care for spas and hot tubs. Added benefits: no mixing or testing. You don’t have to add pH up, down, alkalinity and the like.  Add SilkBalance once a week and your hot tub stays in perfect balance.  Sound like it’s too good to be true?  I was skeptical, very skeptical when I first heard about it, but now use it exclusively in my own hot tub which I use almost every night.  Since the start of winter I haven’t even finished using a 5oz bottle of skin lotion. Normally I would go through 5 oz every two weeks.

You have to try it! You’ll become a believer like Barb Apple and me.

Hot Tub Monkeys in Japan Copy Human Behavior

Snow monkeys are quick learners! In the 1950s, Japanese macaques of the mountainous Shiga Heights region, also known as snow monkeys, took advantage of a beneficial environmental change: humans altered the temperature of some volcanic hot springs to make the water more comfortable for bathers. The snow monkeys, no dummies, took a cue from the human bathers and began to hot tub themselves!

“Humans could survive with fur around their waist, but it is a lot nicer with a fire and a couch,” said Huffman. So, too, the snow monkeys adapted to the change, making the harsh winters a little more tolerable by sitting in the hot tub.

If you’re as smart as a snow monkey, you’d be hot tub soaking, too.

How You Can Save The Whales While Soaking in Your Hot Tub!

More on how you can save the whales while soaking in your hot tub! This just in from Susan Berta, founder of the Orca Network which monitors whale movements and behavior in Puget Sound.  She asks hot tub owners who live on the water to let her know if they see or hear whales.

Hi Alice -

Just wanted to share this with you – we are still enjoying our Olympic Hot Tub while listening to the whales!

I had my first hot tubbing with the whales experience this year!

Thanks to daylight savings time & my cold which totally screwed up my schedule, I was out soaking in the hot tub on our deck at 2:30 am, & was joined by the heavy breathing of 1, & possibly 2, gray whales just south of Hidden Beach, Greenbank, Whidbey Island.

It doesn’t get any better than this!

Suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity? An Infrared Sauna Can Help!

According to many studies, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) affects about 15% of the population, including some who may not realize it’s the reason for their symptoms. Experts in the study of  MCS believe that it may be more common than diabetes.  The problem is so severe in Washington state that the governor has declared May 2010 as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Month. The 1999 consensus definition, still in use today, defines MCS as:

1. A chronic condition

2 with symptoms that occur reproducibly

3. in response to low levels of exposure

4. to multiple unrelated chemicals that

5. improve or resolve when trigger chemicals are removed, and

6. symptoms occur in multiple organ systems, now including a neurological effect.

In MSC studies, over fifty percent of the cases were caused by exposure to pesticides or volatile organic compounds, such as those released from new building materials, furniture, and carpets. After the exposure, patients find that they are now sensitive to low levels of chemicals that did not bother them before. These are called “triggers.” Some examples of triggers include car exhaust, diesel, air fresheners, paint, newspaper ink, glues, adhesives, fabric softeners and dryer sheets, pesticides, and solvents. Some of these are off-gassed in newly remodeled buildings and homes.

For MCS patients, the exposure to triggers can cause mental confusion and difficulty thinking (cognitive impairment), headache, nausea, tremors, fatigue, and other symptoms. People vary in their individual responses. The response can come on within minutes of exposure to a trigger, and can subside once the person is removed from the exposure or remain ongoing.

People unaware that they might have MCS should consider investigating it as a cause if they experience unusual fatigue each time they visit a specific building or office, if they react to perfumes or other scents that do not bother people around them, or if they have headaches, respiratory symptoms, and other symptoms that only occur when they are in certain locations or doing specific activities, such as painting.

One reason MCS is not better understood is due to efforts by a group of doctors to classify MCS patients as having underlying psychological issues. This idea has been widely studied and now has been discredited for the vast majority of MCS sufferers. New data from laboratory challenge tests with specific triggers have shown that there is a physical basis. MCS patients show testable physical changes in reaction to chemical triggers. It’s not in their “head” that they’re ill-there is a physical basis.

Chocolate “Flights” in the Hot Tub? “Flights” not “Fights”!

Yes, I talking about doing a chocolate sampling while soaking in your Hot Spring Spa!!

(On the way into bed you’ll brush you teeth, of course).  What a fabulous way to end your day-sampling the best chocolate while hot tub soaking!  I got the idea for chocolate “flights” in the hot tub from my friend Robin. She told me last week that she and her husband do chocolate flights in bed every night. That is they sample various kinds of yummy chocolate (a lot of it made right here in Seattle), but then they have to get out of bed to brush their teeth which I think is not as relaxing as sampling in the hot tub.

Anyway, my husband and I have been sampling chocolates in the tub and Fran’s Classic Grey & Smoked Caramels are top choice for hot tub soaking-or anytime.  Lindt Dark Chocolate with Fleur de Sel is the runner-up. I’m sorry Godiva.  We couldn’t finish your dark chocolate bar. Way too bitter.

How to conduct a chocolate tasting?

  1. Atmosphere: By holding the tasting in the hot tub, you’ll be in a relaxed and quiet environment.  You can focus all of your attention on tasting and assessing the flavors experienced in the chocolate.
  2. Temperature: Have the chocolate at room temperature for the best flavor.
  3. From 0 to 100%: Begin the tasting chocolate with the lowest percentage of cocoa. For example, start with several milk chocolate types and progress to  dark chocolate. Gradually work up to higher percentage dark chocolate varieties.
  4. Neutralize the palate:

Do not eat any highly spiced foods before the tasting. When trying several varieties of chocolate, cleanse the palate with room temperature water, white bread or weakly brewed, lukewarm rose hip tea or green tea.

  5. Amount:

Don’t try 15 varieties at once. Too many varieties will dull the palate, especially for the novice chocolate connoisseur. Keep the tasting to 5-7 varieties. Allow approximately 1/2 ounce of each chocolate that is to be tasted per person.

  6. Take notes as you taste! In the hot tub, you’ll need a waterproof tablet from Rite in the Rain.

You know how commercials say: “Don’t try this at home”? Well, this IS a great thing to do at home in your own hot tub! Oh, you are thinking what about the calories? That is something to consider, alas. So, don’t do it every night :-)
