No Vacation This Year?

It’s post Labor Day.  Here in the Northwest we’re heading for the rains, the dark, the gloom of winter. If you haven’t taken a summer vacation this year, chances are you won’t get around to it until next summer.  Or even later. That’s a grim forecast.

Checking the weather channel yesterday for the 10-day forecast for Seattle, I saw a survey: “How often does your family take a vacation?” The results were so sad to see:

20.1% said they rarely take a vacation.

12.8% said every 2-5 years.

27.9% did say once a year, but it’s not certain for how long their vacation was.

The rest were more fortunate and vacationed 2-3 times a year for a short time.

I’m talking to YOU, if you’re someone who rarely takes vacations or once only every 2-5 years. Did you know that vacations are necessary to avoid burnout, to refresh, relax and renew?

Work at Home? 7 Ways A Hot Tub At Home Will Save Your Sanity and Restore Your Quality of Life!

Do you work from home?

How do you know when work is over and you’re “home”? Does work just go on and on into the night and start again early in the morning? That’s a sure recipe for burnout.  You must have a boundary between home where you can relax and “let down” and work where you’re required to pay attention, be “on” and be creative. Here are seven ways that smart home workers use a hot tub to improve the quality of their lives:

1. Put an end to your work day by heading out to the hot tub.

If you work at home, having a hot tub will help your draw the line between work and home. A hot tub will save your sanity and make life worth living!  Many Olympic Hot Tub Company customers are home-based workers  or home-based business owners who buy a hot tub and discover it helps them create that dividing line. They shut the computer off at 6 (or later…), go out to the hot tub, dial their mood by soaking from 10-20 minutes  and then “arrive home.”

Once they enter their door after hot tub soaking, they make a rule to stop working. The soak in the hot tub changes the way they feel in 20 minutes so they’ve given their brain a rest and changed their whole attitude.

2. Enhance Your Creativity at “Work”.

Many home-based workers tell us that their creativity is enhanced and and they find themselves getting new ideas in their “off” hours but only when they take that crucial break from brain work.  You need relaxation time to let ideas bubble up. Having a hot tub at home means you can take mini breaks during the day when creativity lags. And, those mini breaks enhance productivity, too.

3. End the Jammie Syndrome.

How often do you get up, grab some coffee & toast and sit right down at the computer to begin your work day still in your jammies?! If you make a habit of getting up and soaking in your hot tub first thing, you’ll have to change out of your jammies and into real clothes when you get out. That’s your chance to get into work mode.  What’s that expression? “Put on your big girl pants and get to work”! Many of our Olympic customers are big fans of soaking first thing in the morning so they can ease into their day gently as their brains rev up for the workday ahead. 4. Cure a hangover. 

There’s also the real possibility of a hangover cure when you soak in the morning-just in case you’ve been out partying and MUST get your brain working the next day. Ever notice that working at home makes you want to go out more? You need relief from the same four walls.

5. Cure a stress headache. 

Stress headache from too many hours at the computer?  If work at home is makes you stressed out, find stress headache relief  by using  coffee, ibuprofen and a soak in the hot tub. It works every time.

6. Cure your “computer back”.

Saunas and Weight Loss

Here’s the number one question prospective sauna buyers want to ask when they come to one of our Olympic Hot Tub stores:  Can a sauna help me lose weight?

Saunas, they’re thinking,  are all the rage these days – the hottest ticket lose-weight-without-the-work luxury item. It’s the unspoken question because no one wants to feel silly or accused of being taken in by online ads.

Everyone knows that a sauna makes you feel great. But do they work for weight loss? In a word: absolutely. Read on…

Call it New Age all you want, saunas have been used by many cultures throughout the world for thousands of years for their health benefits. From Scandinavia to ancient Rome to the native North America tribes, sweating has been used as a way to improve mental and physical health alike.

Sitting in a sauna relieves stress by helping you to relax. The heat is soothing, and makes it easy for one to momentarily shed your mental baggage and bask in the moment. Shedding emotional baggage is one of the keys to shedding physical baggage (as in pounds on one’s body) say many weight loss experts.

 Relieving stress makes it easier to avoid those emotional triggers that cause us to succumb to temptations and consume comfort foods that contribute to weight gain. Sauna bathing will improve your state of mind by raising your mood giving you more optimism and energy to face your life and all its challenges, not least of which is the challenge of sticking with your chosen diet. A calmer mind and a better mood can only help you live a more active and productive life, one so satisfying that you’re inspired to be as good and loving to yourself as you can possibly be. Many people swear by the “self-love” diet.

Hand in hand with relieving stress, a sauna helps lower blood pressure and aids in digestion, both of which make it easier for the body to maximize the nutritional benefits of the food you eat, processing and absorbing more of the nutrients and eliminating less of them as waste. This helps us prevent excess weight gain from poor digestion and it helps us stave of hunger from nutrient depletion.

But the benefits of saunas in losing weight don’t stop at stress relief. In a hot, steamy sauna, the body produces sweat, an activity that requires the burning of calories. That’s right: sweating burns calories.

Another way sweating helps burn calories is by raising the heart rate. The steam and hot temperatures of a sauna prompt the heart to pump a bit faster in order to distribute more blood to all the body’s capillaries, giving the effect of a small cardiovascular workout. And, as we all know, an increased heart rate burns more calories.

So, yes, you can literally lose weight just by sitting in a nice, hot sauna. A sauna should not be the mainstay of one’s weight loss program, but as I’ve outlined above, sauna bathing can be a helpful tool for determined dieters.

Sauna bathing additionally benefits your health by helping boost your immune system. In a sauna, the body temperature raises to the point where the body mimics a fever. In a fever state, the body begins fighting off whatever caused the perceived illness, thereby giving your immune system a safe and healthy little boost. Along the same lines, saunas also effectively help rid the body of harmful toxins, like sodium, lead, and  mercury.

But one caution: if you’re using a sauna to lose weight, weight loss from dehydration (water weight-loss) must be regained. Trying to lose a considerable amount of weight loss from sweating is not a healthy or sustainable weight loss. Drinking water should always be a part of a healthy session in a sauna – before, during, and after.

Instead of rushing to the scale after each session in the sauna to see how much you’ve lost, just appreciate the gradual and  weight loss from regular healthy and properly hydrated use of a sauna over time.  Sauna bathing has helped many Olympic Hot Tub customers lose weight in a healthful way. The mindful benefit from taking the time to relax are alone worth the effort of using a sauna regularly!

Hot Tub Etiquette: Everything You Need to Know To Entertain With Ease

Hot Tub Etiquette.

Here’s the definitive guide of everything you need to know to hot tub entertain without stress.  When everyone is on the same page as far as expected behavior, life goes more smoothly.  I last published our hot tub etiquette advice on Hot Tub Bliss in 2009.  It remains one of the most popular posts so I decided to update it and send it out again because new hot tub owners are constantly asking about the dos & don’ts of  hot tubbing with friends.

Here’s the scene: You’ve just purchased a new hot tub.  You’ve invited friends over for a test dip.  The hot tub’s hot and ready to go….but before that test dip, here are a few tips to make your experience and theirs a perfect one.

Before your hot tub party:

1. Nude or not nude? Be sure to let your guests know what the rules of the “house” are. There is nothing more embarrassing than having your guests strip to the buff when you and your partner have opted for suits or vice versa! If you’ve opted for nudity, it is really important to tell your guests when you invite them date so they have a chance to decline if nudity’s not their thing. As gracious hosts, you want your guests to be comfortable. A mix of suits and nudity doesn’t work for either group.  Either way, do only what’s comfortable for you! 2. Opted for suits? An important tip. If suits are worn, make sure you tell your guests to rinse theirs thoroughly in plain water.  Most suits carry soap power residue from the washing machine! Even a small amount of soap powder can cause a mountain of bubbly foam when the jets are turned on. It’s hard to get rid of all that foam and its very ugly to look at.

3. B. Y. O. T. It’s a great idea to ask guests bring their own towels and take them home for drying. Eliminating a big stack of laundry to wash & dry is a winning idea.

4. Shower before soaking, please. Ask all guests to do a quick rinse off before soaking. Washing all of the lotion, deodorant & sweat down the drain instead of leaving it behind in the tub will help keep your new hot tub water clean.

At the party:

5. Open cuts & sores? Make it a rule to stay out if you have open cuts or sores (and ask guests to do the same) and never discuss your scars! Ditto about asking others about their birthmarks, warts or scars.

6. Love in the tub? If you’re with your lover, hold the passions until you reach dry land. Intimacy is best done in private.

7. No foamy stuff, please! Ask guests to refrain from adding bubble bath, bath oil or any foreign substances to the hot tub. If  suds do foam up, reach for the SeaKlear Clarifier and follow these tips.

8. Photo op?Not a great idea. Don’t take pictures without getting everyone’s permission first. Better yet, don’t take pictures. There’s nothing drearier than showing the office gang the photos of your Saturday night hot tub party.

9. What to serve? Light finger foods especially fruit are the best choices when soaking and make good party fare for guests. Note: potato chips are the worst thing to eat in a hot tub.  Potato chips or other snack foods (crackers, goldfish) if spilled accidentally into the hot tub make a gummy mess that’s hard to clean up.

10. Save alcohol for after soaking. Alcohol in the tub can be deadly. Hot water is a stimulant and alcohol a depressant on your system. Alcohol’s effects are felt very swiftly in a hot tub at 104°. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages for guests-iced tea, sparkling water are great choices. 11. Share the jets! Many hot tubs today have different types of jets at each seat. By changing seats, you’ll get to sample the effects of each jet.  Let everyone have a turn in front of all jets for the best experience.

12. Electronics.Water and electronics don’t mix. Stick to battery operated toys and games unless the music or television system is part of your hot tub and designed to operate near water.  Wouldn’t you hate to drop your i-pod or iphone in the water?

13. Pets in hot tubs? Cute, but NO! No matter how cute the dog or how much he wants to hot tub with you, pets in hot tubs are not recommended both for the pet and the water quality!

14. Children? Kids love hot tubs, but NEVER leave children alone in a hot tub-even for a minute!

Hot Tub Fashion Week: Everything You Need to Know To Be Fashionable While Hot Tubbing

Hot tub fashionistas! It’s Fashion week in New York and time to speak out on what the fashionable hot tubber will be wearing to, from and in the hot tub this coming season.

 1.  FOOTWEAR. Shoes of all kinds hold my interest for longer than is probably good for my brain.  But  I do enjoy wearing interesting shoes on my feet. Mostly I wear Icon shoes, but out to the hot tub, its  FitFlops.  Going barefoot is nice on a warm evening, but why take a chance of tracking sand, dirt, leaves into the hot tub?  FitFlops the are perfect walk to the hot tub solution. They feel great and are virtually indestructible. Their contribution to fashion may be debatable, however.  I leave that debate to you.  My post on FitFlops was one of the most popular last year: “Footwear for the Walk to the Hot Tub: Update.”

 

2.  SWIMSUITS. Moving up the body, swimsuits have always been controversial vis a vis the hot tub. There are some real nude fans out there, but in recent years modesty has prevailed and swim suits in the hot tubs are “in” or “on”.  Buying a new swim suit is so traumatic for most women, that the thought of losing it to an early death by chlorine is painful. Save that perfect suit  by following these tips in my post:  “Swimsuits and Hot Tub Soaking. Seven Tips for Style.”

3.  TOWELS AND DECORATIVE CLIPS.  The right kind of towel is all important for hot tubbing. You want one that doesn’t get heavy, soggy or show the dirt. Aquis towels are perfect for hot tubbers.  And, to make them more fashionable when wrapping them sarong style, you’ll want the perfect decorative clip. 4.  ROBES. I’m including robes-terrycloth mostly-in the Fashion Week lineup just to be complete. I don’t think a terrycloth robe can ever be considered “fashionable”.  Up for debate? Let me hear your thoughts. Show me a fashionable terrycloth robe and I’ll change my mind.

5.  HATS.  What would Fashion Week be without accessories? And where would Seattlites be without hats for hot tubbing in the rain?  Sure, you could hold an umbrella aloft while soaking, but how relaxing is that? Umbrella + hat= Umbrella hat. Functional, fun and,to some, completely over the top but one person’s fashion is another’s “I’d rater die than wear that.” I’ll let you decide the fashion rating on the umbrella hat. Hot Tub Buyers Guide: Get the Facts on Hot Tub Warranties

When you’re shopping for a hot tub, it’s easy to get confused. There’s so many conflicting stories from salespeople and so much misinformation especially regarding hot tub warranties.

Of course you want value for your money and a shortcut through the shopping process. How can you tell if you’re getting a hot tub with a warranty that really is a warranty and worth more than the paper it’s printed on?  Ask these questions before you buy.

1. IS THE HOT TUB MADE BY A PUBLIC COMPANY?  Here’s a little known fact: Hot Spring Spas are the only hot tubs made by a public company.  They’re a division of  MASCO- a Fortune 500 company that focuses on manufacturing and distribution of building products and branded consumer products (like Delta Faucets, Behr Paint, Weiser Locks, etc-for the home improvement and construction markets.

What does that have to do with the warranty you’re thinking… There’s a piece of legislation called Sarbanes-Oxley that was passed after the Enron scandal of a few years ago. Sarbanes-Oxley makes public companies accountable and more transparent.  In the case of  Hot Spring Spas, they must put enough money to cover the warranty into an escrow account (that does not generate interest!!!) for each and every hot tub they make. The amount has to cover every year of the warranty for every model.  No other hot tub on the market has this kind of  warranty assurance that is your guarantee of performance.

2.  CAN I SEE THE WARRANTY AND  READ IT? Is the warranty in a brochure or online for me to download a copy? Take a look at Hot Spring’s unparalled warranty. When shopping for a hot tub, dare the salesperson to show you a warranty that is this good. (Hint: if the salesperson says you’ll get the warranty when they deliver the hot tub, leave the store. Run. I’m not making this up!
