Hot Tub Buyers Guide: Smart Shoppers “Try Before They Buy”

Smart hot tub shoppers “try before they buy”.  Don’t get stuck with the wrong hot tub because you didn’t try it wet.  Your chances of getting the wrong model are a sure bet when you buy a hot tub from a photo or only gazed at it dry.

Here’s the #1 reason to try before you buy.  Most of our customers shop on Olympic Hot Tub’s  website before they go to a store.  Typically people pre-select one model from the showroom on the website to come see and most likely buy.  After taking a test soak, 75% of  buyers changed their minds about the model they had pre-selected from the photos on the website or in the brochure.   The model they had originally seen in a small website photo seemed perfect, but when they took a test soak, not so.  The reasons are as varied as the reason why we have 18 models made by Hot Spring Spas.  Every body is different!  One person’s ideal seat, jet placement and depth may not suit everyone else.

There are some things you can only figure out with your shoes off! You wouldn’t buy a car without taking a test drive.  Why would you dream of buying a hot tub without  “Trying before you Buy” If you’re cruising the aisles of a show this coming week  or surfing the pages of an on-line hot tub supplier, decide what you like.  But before you put a deposit down, test soak.  Get Wet!!

We’ve had hot tubs ready for test dips since our first day in business 35 years ago.  At Olympic Hot Tub Company, we believe that only by trying before you buy will you find the hot tub that best suits you and your family for every day relaxation and health.

1. Remember Goldilocks. You want a hot tub that’s just right. And, the only way to find it is to test it wet. Take a test soak to judge the space. Does the tub you’re considering have enough room for your family? Not too big; not too small! Also, think of your backyard space. You’ll want a hot tub that fits your landscape.

2. Seating depth matters. Note the torso depth when you’re sitting up comfortably. In the Northwest, you’ll want the water depth to be over your shoulders so you can be warm & snuggy on cold, rainy nights.

3. Don’t neglect your feet. Is there enough foot room in the foot well? Are there jets to massage your tired feet?

4. Select the best seats in the house. Multi-level seating should accommodate both adults and children. Make sure there are seats that fit everyone in your family. People of different heights in your family?  It’s especially important to soak!  A tall person with no water over her shoulders or a short person up to his nose won’t be very comfortable. Wet test the lounge seat. Some people love them; others don’t because they float off or their legs are too long or short to comfortable recline.  Make sure any lounge seats fit you and other family members.

5. It’s all about the jets. Pay attention to jet types and jet placement. Most hot tub users prefer to adjust jet pressure for the hydrotherapy they’re seeking. Too, most people prefer a variety of jets that hit their sore spots-like calf, wrist, shoulder and back jets. Check out the jet placement to see that they are focused on the spots where you need relief.

6. Listen for the silence. A truly quiet hot tub like a Hot Spring has no audible noise when the water is circulating, heating and filtering. You don’t want any noise when it’s running not only for your own peace of mind, but that of your neighbors. You’re buying a hot tub for relaxation. Don’t add irritating noise that spoils your peace & quiet.

7.  Convenience. You’ll want the most convenient hot tub to use on a daily basis. Are the controls easy to use and understand? Set it and forget it or difficult to program?  You’re buying a hot tub to relax not make relaxation a hassle.

8. Take a deep breath and smell the water! Our Olympic Hot Tub Company showroom hot tubs are set up with SilkBalance natural water care or ACE salt water care for the easiest water care and no smells. There’s no chlorine smell or skin drying chemicals in a Hot Spring Spa with SilkBalance or ACE.  Crystal clean water without effort or hassle should be your #1 concern.

9. Feel the water. Note how your skin feels after soaking. You’ll notice a BIG difference with SilkBalance natural water care or ACE salt water care. Your skin will feel silky smooth with none of the dryness that results from soaking in chlorine and masses of other chemicals.

Schedule a FREE test soak at any of  Olympic Hot Tub Company’s  5 Puget Sound area showrooms today!  Bring the whole family and their suits & towels.  We’ll have the hot tubs hot & ready when you are.

Hot tub shopping? Be a smart shopper and “try before you buy”.  If the model you want is not available to try, don’t buy it. That’s the best advice you’ll hear for getting the best hot tub for you!

How to Claim Your Hot Tub As Medical Expense Deduction on Your 2011 Tax Return

TAX DEDUCTION FOR YOUR HOT TUB?

We all know that April 15th is tax day.  A visit from our accountant this morning brought the impending date into stark awareness.  Taxes are no one’s favorite topic unless you’re an accountant or work for the IRS.  You want to pay your fair share, but why pay more than you have to, right?  It’s always wise to be aware of possible deductions that will reduce your overall tax bill.

IRS regulations may allow a deduction for your hot tub purchase if your doctor recommends hot water therapy for a medical condition.

At Olympic Hot Tub Company, we’re hearing more frequent reports that one of the reasons for purchasing a Hot Spring Spa is a medical condition for which a hot tub will provide relief.

Those who suffer from arthritis,  RLS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, back pain or other medical problems typically find that their aches and pains are alleviated by hot tub soaking. There are many medical conditions for which a hot tub purchase may qualify for a medical deduction including injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

A doctor’s prescription can turn your hot tub into a piece of deductible medical equipment, as long as you satisfy a few IRS conditions.  Remember that a written recommendation is the first and most important step in the deduction process.

Look for IRS Publication 502, which covers medical expenses.   According to IRS Publication 502, medical expenses are the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and the costs for treatments affecting any part or function of the body. These include the costs of equipment, supplies, and diagnostic devices needed for these purposes. However, medical care expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental defect or illness. They do not include expenses that are merely beneficial to general health.

Deducting Capital Improvement Expenses

You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for special equipment installed in a home, or for improvements, if their main purpose is medical care for you, your spouse, or your dependent. The cost of permanent improvements that increase the value of your property may be partly included as a medical expense. The cost of the improvement is reduced by the increase in the value of your property. Only the difference is a medical expense. If the value of your property is not increased by the improvement, the entire cost is included as a medical expense. Actual increase in value to the home is best determined by an appraisal.

You’ll find a good discussion of the IRS regulations and helpful hints for obtaining this deduction at Hurt911.org The Center for Accident and Injury Insurance.  The founder of this site also recommends products for physical therapy that he has purchased and uses himself including a Hot Spring Spa.  If you’re in the market for a hot tub, read his story.

It’s not too early to start lining up qualified deductions before you do your taxes.  If you need a copy of your receipt for a hot tub you purchased and had delivered last year, call our office 206 286-0700.  This post is no substitute for consulting your own tax preparation expert for assurance that you qualify for using the hot tub as a medical expense under IRS rules.

Let us know  about your own success with taking a medical deduction for your own home hot tub.

Sauna Temperature? As Hot As You Can Stand It! Find Out Why.

Make the sauna as hot as you can stand it?  There’s a wacky idea you’re thinking.  Here’s one way to look at taking a hot sauna: “benign masochism”.  I know, I know. Many people think taking a traditional steam sauna is masochism pure and simple no benign about it.

But here’s another way to look at taking a traditional sauna that’s super hot.  Psychologist Paul Rozin has argued that people get a kick from “benign masochism”—that is, controlled exposure to low-level discomfort (think spicy chili peppers and saunas).  Maybe we love the endorphin rush.  Or just the delightful contrast when we ultimately escape from the pain.  Regardless, it pays to pamper yourself occasionally with a bit—but just a bit—of suffering.

So an endorphin rush as well as the relief when it’s over are two ways to make a sauna feel good for those of you who are skeptical.

Here’s the best reason to take a hot sauna:

Many researchers believe that small doses of “stressors” such as poisons, radiation and heat can actually be good for you — so good that they can even reverse the aging process.  This counter-intuitive effect, called “hormesis,” was once considered flaky, but in recent years, it has been shown to extend longevity in yeast, fruit flies, protozoans, worms and rodents.

If the findings extend to people (and studies are being done on this), it could stretch the average healthy human lifespan to 90, says biologist Joan Smith-Sonneborn of the University of Wyoming, Laramie.

How so?  Stressors seem to kick-start natural repair mechanisms, including heat-shock proteins and DNA-repair enzymes, to fix the damage they have caused.  If this damage is not too severe, the repair systems may overcompensate, building up enough oomph to repair unrelated damage as well.  And if you accept the idea that damage equals aging, this is nothing less than rejuvenation.

The big unanswered question is at what dose does an otherwise-harmful agent become beneficial?  Clearly, too much radiation or poison or heat are bad for you.  However, many medical professionals believe that there may be a safe way to trick your body’s repair mechanisms into overdrive and that’s with a sauna’s heat.  Look at the Finns-arguably some of the healthiest people on the planet.  There are more saunas than cars in Finland and they get used daily.

So give a sauna a try for better health.  Just don’t overdo it and remember we’re not doctors.  Check with your own doctor if you have concerns. This is a blog post about healthy ideas!  What are your thoughts on the  “benign masochism” of a traditional steam sauna?

The Shocking Truth About Neck Pain! Simple Hot Tub Exercise Better Than Pain Drugs

The shocking truth about neck pain is that simple exercises like the  Hot Tub “Chicken Exercise”  and/or chiropractic care are better than drugs for relief.

Look out big pharma. Surprise! Surprise! Doing some simple exercises at home or seeing a chiropractor is more effective than pain killers in getting rid of a painful crick in the neck says a new federally funded study as reported in the New York Times.  In a nutshell, the new research, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, found that chiropractic care or simple exercises done at home were better at reducing pain than taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen or narcotics.

Are you one of the millions of Americans with chronic neck pain? Neck pain affects at least three quarters of Americans at some point in their lives (!), and many take over-the-counter medications, visit doctors or chiropractors in search of relief.  If you’re a sedentary office worker who’s parked in front of a computer screen all day it’s likely you’ve had this particular type of neck pain.

In a study run by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota, participants were divided into three groups. The study was designed to answer the question: would spinal manipulation be more effective than home exercise or medication at relieving neck pain after 12 weeks of treatment?

One group was assigned to visit a chiropractor for roughly 20-minute sessions for the length of the study, making an average of 15 visits.

A second group was assigned to take common pain relievers like acetaminophen and — in some cases, at the discretion of a doctor — stronger drugs like narcotics and muscle relaxants.

The third group met twice with physical therapists who gave them instructions on simple, gentle exercises for the neck that they could do at home. They were encouraged to do 5 to 10 repetitions of each exercise up to eight times a day.  (See the demo at www.annals.org).

One very beneficial exercise was dubbed “the chicken”.  Stick your neck out like a chicken walking and pull it back slowly. You have to see it to appreciate it!  It works according to the study. What better place to do the chicken than your hot tub?!?

After 12 weeks, the people in the non-medication groups did significantly better than those taking the drugs. Over 50% of  those who met with chiropractors and 48 percent who did the exercises reported at least a 75% reduction in pain. But only 33% of the people in the medication group reported a reduction in pain.

A year later, 53% of the subjects who had received spinal manipulation still reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, with similar results from the exercise group. But only 38% of the medication group reported less pain.

“It was a “big surprise” to see that the home exercises were about as effective as the chiropractic sessions, “ said said Dr. Gert Bronfort, an author of the study and research professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minnesota. “We hadn’t expected that they would be that close,” he said. “But I guess that’s good news for patients.”

In addition to their limited pain relief, the medications had at least one other downside: people kept taking them. “The people in the medication group kept on using a higher amount of medication more frequently throughout the follow-up period, up to a year later,” Dr. Bronfort said. “If you’re taking medication over a long time, then we’re running into more systemic side effects like gastrointestinal problems.”

He also expressed concern that those on medications were not as empowered or active in their own care as those in the other groups. “We think it’s important that patients are enabled to deal with as much control over their own condition as possible,” he said. “This study shows that they can play a large role in their own care.”

So empower yourself. Learn the exercises and do them at home in your Hot Spring  Spa. The hot water will relax your muscles and increase circulation to the sore area. It’s free, it’s easy and so much better for you than drugs.  And, that’s a fact.

Let us know how you do in the comments section.

Love to Hot Tub with A Good Book? 5 Tips To Make Hot Tub Reading Easier

Grab your rubber duck, caffeine of  choice, a good read and you’re set.  It’s time to celebrate National Read in the Tub Day which was yesterday, but I completely spaced it.

Why just February 9th? Why not read every day in the hot tub?

If you’re like me, you’ve dropped many a good book in the water.  Here’s the scoop on hot tub reading to make it easy to relax, read and keep your book dry while you soak:

1. WRAP YOUR KINDLE IN A PLASTIC BAG. For those of you who are afraid of dropping it in the water or getting it wet (a real concern), a zip lock plastic bag will keep your Kindle dry.  It may be a little hard to read through the plastic. Good thing you can adjust the type size!

2. GET A WATERPROOF KINDLE COVER. Here’s an easy and inexpensive solution:  get a waterproof Kindle cover so that you can make better use of your time in the hot tub and enjoy the time more besides!

Some covers protect your eReader from moisture and splashing (not waterproof)  and some claim to protect your device from complete submersion.  Take your pick.

3. DO THE OVER THE SIDE TWIST You can put your book or newspaper on the deck surrounding the hot tub and twist around to read it. Not too much fun and uncomfortable for a long read.

4. GET WATERPROOF BOOKS. In August 2004, Charles Melcher patented the Durabook, a process for making waterproof books. His company, Melcher Media, published “Poolside” ($14), an immersible collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway, Joyce Carol Oates, John Cheever and others.  Durabooks makes some great waterproof books some featuring short stories by noted authors as well as some spicier tales.

The best one? “The Beach Book” with stories set on beaches. This book is like a mini-vacation.

5. Grab an AQUA Reader.Trying to read in the hot tub is challenging.   Your book usually gets wet. Your arms get tired holding it aloft.

Print junkies rejoice!  The Aquareader offers a stable, buoyant place for books, magazines, and reports. There’s even a built-in cup holder. Reading material stays dry and secure while you stay warm and comfortable on cold fall nights sitting upright or lounging with shoulders at or below water level.

You may never leave the tub! Warn your significant other that you may develop prune-toes. Aquareader- a must have from Olympic Hot Tub Company.

Hot Tub on Valentine’s Day: How To Create A Memorable Evening

Here’s news to two-thirds of you men out there: Tuesday is Valentine’s Day. Yes, that Valentine’s Day – February 14.

This Valentine’s Day think bubbles not baubles.  It’s not the expense, it’s the thought that counts.  Make this a memorable Valentine’s Day. You don’t need reservations at a crowded restaurant. You need a few preparations for a cozy evening at home.  Just add water – to your Hot Spring Spa. Use your imagination. Or take some advice:

♥  Leave an invitation to the warm, wet rendezvous somewhere she’ll find it.

♥  Scrub the tub, light some candles, adjust the temperature, put some mood music on your iPod’s for the floating portable speaker, add some Spazzaz aromatherapy scents, splash in the moonlight under the stars, turn on the tub lights – maybe in a new color.

♥  Put some chilled San Pellegrino sparkling water or hot chocolate within reach, maybe some chocolate-covered strawberries or some Emily’s chocolate covered fortune cookies.

♥  Learn some Hand Reflexology techniques for a touching surprise in the tub.

♥  Try turning the jets off for a romantic sound of silence. after you’ve had a jet massage.

♥   Leave a bottle of wine, maybe Italian bubbly Proseco, on ice for an after-soak toast with some Fran’s Dark Chocolate Truffles – better than an energy-sapping heavy meal, even better than oysters.

Don’t have a hot tub? Then it’s time to get one.  Have a hot tub? Give her some new towels or fluffy terrycloth robes, with a new Spazazz or Magma Onsen Beppu scent for the warm aroma of romance.

Oh, and ladies – here’s your gift to him for this special moment:

♥    Don’t feel like you have to talk about your relationship.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Olympic!

Super Bowl Party Hangover? Hot Tub NOW For Fast Relief

What’s drinking?
A mere pause from thinking! said Lord Byron.

If your senses left you yesterday and you did over-imbibe, read on for seven tips that will make you feel better faster.

The term hangover was originally a 19th century expression describing unfinished business—something left over from a meeting—or “survival.”  In 1904, the meaning “morning after-effect of drinking too much” first surfaced and has been used ever since as a catchall to describe that awful feeling.

The most commonly reported features of a hangover include  headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, lethargy, and thirst typically after the intoxicating effects of the alcohol you consumed the night before wear off.  Add dysphoria- an unpleasant or uncomfortable mood, such as sadness, anxiety, irritability or restlessness. Let’s call it the opposite of euphoria. You  feel rotten.

It’s the American way to “do” something when we feel bad. No waiting for a temporary hangover to work itself out. In this case, you can act now to feel better.

The body rids itself of alcohol and its toxic byproducts in four ways, breathing, via the liver or kidneys and from sweating. Exercise speeds breathing, increases sweat and moves alcohol-laden blood through the liver and kidneys to be processed more quickly.

You probably don’t feel like going to the gym this morning (if you do, good for you!), but jumping in your Hot Spring Spa will do almost as much for you. The heat increases your circulation which will speed blood more quickly through the liver and kidneys.  Did you know that  immediately after a person is immersed, water begins to exert pressure on the body?  Cardiac volume increases by nearly one-third when you’re immersed to the neck.

Here’s what to do to feel better now:

1. Rehydrate. Drink a glass of Gatorade or any sports drink that replaces electrolytes before getting in the hot tub. One reason you feel so bad now is because you’re dehydrated. Coffee is dehydrating and while you think that it is just what you need, it is not a helpful for a hangover.

2. Resist the temptation to take aspirin which is a blood thinner, just like alcohol and can intensify its effects!  The side effects of aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen can be magnified when alcohol is in your system, so it is best (even though it may be the first thing you reach for) to avoid them to kill the hangover pain.  See Tip 5 below for the best way to get rid of a hangover headache.

3. Get in the hot tub at between 102-104 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

4. Do deep breathing exercises in the tub.

5. For headache relief that’s simple and natural, try pinching your hand between your thumb and forefinger while in the hot tub. That part of the hand is a nerve junction and an acupressure point which is supposed to release tension in the head neck. The advice is to pinch quite hard for thirty seconds every five minutes until the headache subsides.

6. Take a cold shower after your hot tub soak which will really get your circulation moving and your heart rate up.

7. Drink water or Gatorade after you soak. More of the right kind of fluids (and “hair of the dog” is NOT the right kind of fluid) will flush the alcohol from your system and revive you.

Happy Day after the Super Bowl.  Save these tips for next year.  If you have any other sure-cure hangover remedies, please share in the comment box.  And, hope you feel better soon.
