Hot Tub Myth #1 “We’ll Buy It and Never Use It”

“I just got out of my hot tub and I wouldn’t give it up for a million dollars. It does so much for me.”

– Customer e-mail

 HOT TUB MYTH #1

“We’ll buy it and never use it.”

Look, we’re not talking about a stationary bike or rowing machine here. Hot tubs are not only healthy, but they’re healthy relaxation – you can sweat without working up a sweat. Your hot tub will not gather dust.  According to surveys most Hot Spring Spa owners soak at least three to five times a week – many of them as part of the daily routine.

Wake-up Call. The best part of waking up is you in your hot tub. You can take your coffee with you and listen to the day waking up around you.  One leading Seattle surgeon schedules a 5 a.m. soak to center himself for the day in his hot tub before hours of surgery.

Commute Clean-up. A stop-off at the hot tub between pulling into the garage and greeting the family can rinse off your stress and make the homecoming happier.

Home Work Ends. If you work where you live, what better way to break the day than reward yourself with a refreshing dip? Leave your “office,” walk to the backyard tub a world away from work, and come “home” ready for a relaxed evening.

Weather or Not. Who’s afraid of a little Pacific Northwest rain when you’re already soaking in your Hot Spring Spa? Let the rest of the world enjoy some water, too. And it’s fun to relax in the one warm backyard spot when you can watch the snow fly and maybe jump out to make an angel.

Heart of the Party. Barbecues, family reunions and other backyard get-togethers flow better with a hot tub. You’ll make a splash with the neighbors.

Family Room. Why settle for dry family time when you can add water to your conversations, entertainment and just relaxing together? Hot tubs are guaranteed good, clean family fun.

Tub for Two. Many couples schedule date in the warm water for an intimate heart-to-heart alone together.

Sweet Dreams. A hot tub soak just before bed eases your muscles and joints, raises your body temperature, and relaxes you all over, so you fall asleep fast and enjoy a good night’s rest.

Never use your hot tub? Considering the choices, when would you ever not use it? One soak and you’ll join our Olympic Hot Tub Company Hot Spring owners who say:  “This is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself! Why didn’t I do it sooner?”

Buying a Hot Tub? You’re Making a Big Mistake if You Don’t Get Full Foam Insulation

Who would have guessed that I would get excited about hot tub insulation material?

Like whoop de do! I am so non-technical. I’m the person who says, “Don’t bore me with the details. I just want the hot tub to work & cost very little to heat.”

Well, I’m excited about THIS hot tub insulation. That is the new for 2012  FiberCor™ insulation that Watkins Manufacturing has adopted for Limelight and Hot Spot Spas.  It’s an innovative composite insulation material.  And, Limelight and Hot Spot Spas are the first in the industry with the more effective, environmentally-friendly material.  Two-pound density FiberCor replaces half-pound urethane foam in the construction.

The loose, pliable, wool-like material made from 25 percent recycled products is non-toxic, non-hazardous and involves no petroleum products (so no worries about escalating petroleum prices), and it’s easy to service. You can stick your hand in it, pull some out & replace it just as easily.

FiberCor meets California Energy Commission (CEC) energy requirements-the toughest in the country, so it’s certified to save energy and cut your ownership costs.

Best of all, it keeps more heat in the hot tub – where you can relax and not worry about high energy bills. That’s something to get excited about.  If you’re not looking at a fully foamed hot tub, you’re throwing your money away. Your heating bill will be $35-$60 a month and more.  Not the under $20. in Puget Sound for most Hot Spot & Limelight models. Add up the extra costs over a couple of years.  By the time you get past the 5 year mark, you’ll have lost any savings you thought you made with a cheaper non-fully foamed hot tub.

Thank Watkins Mfg. for always being on the cutting edge of hot tub manufacturing and caring about your energy bill.

Truth or Fiction: Does Sauna Use Remove Toxic Chemicals From the Body? New Study to Find Out.

A study commissioned by the NIH  is testing sauna effects on stored toxic chemicals in the body.  Will sauna sessions help detox these harmful chemicals from the body to result in better health? That’s the big question.

The National Institutes of Health is sponsoring research at Bastyr University near Seattle to determine the effects of sauna use on toxic environmental chemicals in the body.

Dr. Jason Allen, the lead researcher, is testing whether the sauna helps break down the fatty tissues that can store more than 200 synthetic chemicals. When the chemicals are released from the tissues, the body can excrete them.

Those chemicals, accumulated in the body, are linked to such diseases as cancer, heart disease, obesity and infertility, as well as birth defects and developmental problems – and there is no known way to remove them. The effect on individuals depends on both genetic and environmental factors.

Allen has built a sauna that combines a traditional heater and radiant heating panels for the three-week study.

One group of people will use the sauna for two hours at a time five days a week, another group one hour at a time three days a week. A third group, for control, will not use the sauna.

The groups using the sauna will be monitored for health and mood, and blood tests will monitor their PCB levels.

“Products are out there that slowly degrade in the environment and accumulate in humans, particularly in fat,” Allen told a Seattle radio station. “So in this study, we picked one chemical that’s detectable in 100 percent of the human population, in fact 100 percent of the mammalian population, and those are PCBs.

PCBs, once common chemicals in electrical components, were banned in 1979 in the United States and in 2001 around the world, but Allen says more than 80,000 untested chemicals are still used in manufacturing.

If the study demonstrates a reduction in chemicals from sauna use, we’ll know that the healthy glow you gain from your session is much more than skin deep. Stay tuned.

You’re Wasting Your Money if You Don’t Hot Tub BEFORE a Massage

Hot Tub before a massage to get the full benefit of those hands on your sore, achy body.

Getting a good massage is one of life’s pleasures. It’s a necessity for those who experience chronic pain & aches and a way to feel good for the rest of us.

Many of our Olympic hot tub owners get weekly or bi-weekly massages for health, pain relief and relaxation.  The cost of regular massages can add up. If you’re going straight to your massage without soaking in a hot tub first, you’re not getting the full benefit for your time and money.

Take a soak in the hot tub before your massage for 15-20 minutes and you’ll enjoy a better massage, guaranteed.

Your surface muscles will be relaxed by the hot water and the soothing jets make it possible for the masseuse to work deeper without your feeling pain.

New to massage? Not sure what kind to select or what to select? For the lowdown on rubdowns, here’s a quick guide to what works best when.

1. Deadlines or family dramas have left your wound up and tense.

Swedish Massage. Long strokes increase blood circulation and the therapist will pass the muscles back and forth between he hands to dissolve tension. Deep-tissue massage is the Swedish technique applied with more pressure. If you’re new to massage, watch out. You may be sore for 24-48 hours afterward. Not so much if you soak first.

2.  You need help keeping up with your new workout regime.

Sports Massage. This involves more stretching and rocking of the body and is a bit faster paced than the other techniques. It’s designed to invigorate the body, prevent injuries and help anyone pushing physical boundaries.

3. Your joints are tight.

Thai massage. Usually done on floor mats, Thai massage is like yoga with a helper. You’re fully clothed as the therapist intertwines her body with yours and gently persuades your limbs, torso to stretch in ways they’ve never been asked to do before. Great for loosening your joints & expanding your range of motion.

4. You’re feeling sluggish or bloated.

Lymphatic drainage. Very light strokes focus on the soft tissue-not muscles or joints. Helps disperse excess fluid and is often recommend post surgery to reduce swelling.

5. You’re on your feet all day or wear high heels.

Reflexology. Working from the theory that every muscle and organ has a corresponding point on the feet, the reflexologist presses her thumbs in circular motions over the soles & tops of the feet as well as the ankles. Feels heavenly.

 6. You Want to Float Home.

Four-handed massage. Many spas offer massages with two therapists working on your body in sync. You’re getting twice as much massage in the same amount of time.

So select the type of massage that suits your needs and make an appointment.  Consider the masseuse!  It’s easier on the masseuse if you’re warm and relaxed when you get on the massage table.

Massages can be expensive, but worth every penny in giving you relief. So, soak in your Hot Spring Spa before your massage and make it even more worthwhile.

Weird & Wonderful Places For A Hot Tub

Everybody’s doing it! Putting a hot tub in strange & wonderful locations, that is. Here are three that caught my eye recently:

1. NEXT TO THE HELIPAD AT A HOTEL IN BANGKOK.

What do you think of when you think Peninsula Hotels? Chances are it’s some combination of luxury, business travel, and personalized service. The Terrace Suite at The Peninsula Bangkok has something else: a Hot Spring Spa Jetsetter model. Soak in this hot tub and you’ll have at least 180-degrees of the Bangkok metropolis at your feet.

The views are mind blowing. You’re close enough to the helipad to wave at anyone making a helicopter entrance.

2. ON A CUSTOM MADE BOAT IN LAKE UNION.

A hot tub that is afloat on a lake (we do want a calm surface for this one) and where you can enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature  is an idea whose time has come.  Or, not!

Each hot tub boat comes complete with coolers, locked dry storage, water jets, running gear and safety equipment. They are subject to all US Coast Guard Standards, have had a complete marine survey, and are fully insured. They’re powered by electric in-board motors. The boat can accommodate up to six persons while underway, and eight hot tubers at dockside. It is powered by an almost silent electric motor at approximately 4 to 6 knots. No liquor on board and swimsuits are mandatory.

Bookmark Hot Tub Boats and remember that they plan to be operational by May 2012 for some luxurious fun in the near future. Boats for rent & boats for sale for your own private dock.  Personally we’re worried about the water care. How are they going to keep the water clean & safe??

3. IN AN OHIO STATE DORM ROOM

An Ohio University student decided the best way to meet and mingle was by installing a hot tub his dorm room. And no surprise, it’s working.

“I leave my door open all the time when I’m in, and people will come over,” said Kevin Lenahan. “Some people I’ve never even met before with their swimming trunks and towels and they’ll jump on in, and that’s how you meet people.”

Ohio University officials have safety concerns, including the smell and the use of chemicals for maintenance.  (He’s obviously not using SilkBalance. That’s a bromine feeder floating in the water. No wonder it smells!).  They demanded that Lenahan remove the hot tub.  He’s fighting the order.

“As a matter of fact on the weekends, it’s so convenient for me. I just leave the door open and people I’ve never met before come wandering on in, and that’s how I meet people. It’s been very convenient in that regard,” Lenahan said.

What can I say? When you want to hot tub, you just gotta have one nearby to jump into!  Of the three, I’d take the one in Bangkok.  Sorry, Kevin, your dorm hot tub looks too funky for words.

Have you seen any weird & wonderful hot tub locations?  Do share with us.

The Art of Hot Tubbing in the Rain-5 Tips For A Better Rainy Night Soak

What’s with all this rain? I guess it’s normal, but it seems excessive. Doesn’t it? It’s not just rain. It’s hail, sleet, snow proving that winter’s  still here. The Seattle Times says it’s La Nina and we’ve got to get used to it.  Rain is forecast for today, tomorrow and through the weekend and beyond.

Let’s do better than endure this weather.

Let’s enjoy it and make the most of it by going out to the hot tub tonight rain, sleet, snow or not!

If you were wise enough to have placed your Hot Spring Spa right outside a door, you’re in luck. It may take some coaxing and convincing self-talk to convince yourself to run out to the tub in the cold, freezing rain in your bathing or birthday suit and jump in.  But, once you’re there, get ready for a fantastic hot tub soaking experience! And, you know you won’t feel the cold at all when you get out of the tub.

There are 5 things you must do before you go out in this rain. Plan ahead for a wonderful hot tub soak and master the art of hot tubbing in the rain:

1.     Put on a hat or grab an umbrella.  I don’t like the rain pouring down on my face nor soaking my hair. You probably don’t either. So take cover. A hat will protects your head from heat loss, too. For all about hats for the hot tub check out this post.  In case you didn’t know, the umbrella hat is a perennial favorite.

2.     Make some hot chocolate! That’s the perfect drink for the tub in weather like this. Cold drinks would be too much of a shock to your system tonight. Take the chocolate to the tub in a plastic cup. Don’t use ceramic or glass that might break.  Plan to drink the chocolate after you get out? Add some exotic flavor to give it a kick like Bailey’s Irish Cream, Cask & Caramel, Amaretto, Peppermint schnapps or Frangelico.

3.     Wear slippers. Yes, wear them. This is NOT the time to go bravely barefoot to the tub. You might slip-a bad thing. And you’ll likely track leaves & dirt into the tub if you trek out in bare feet-definitely not a good thing.

4.     Heat your terry cloth robe in the dryer to make the transition from your warm house to the tub easier. Ditto your towels so they’re toasty when you leave the tub.

5.     Wear extreme weather moisturizer on your face. There are many brands made for skiing and mountain climbing. If you don’t have any on hand, use Vaseline to protect your face from getting over-exposed to the cold. You don’t want those small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks to break from being too cold.

6.    Turn you hot tub into a therapy pool with Spazazz. Colorful and fragrant Spazazz Therapy Crystals set the mood, arouse emotion, and relax your state of mind and body. Whether it is romance, muscle therapy, or peace of mind, the benefits of aromatherapy are always desirable, so add a few capsules of Spazazz Crystals to your spa or hot tub before you soak.  These fantastic fragrances will enhance your spa experience by transporting you to a deeper relaxation.

Now, you’re ready.

Carefully walk out in the rain.  Lift the cover, see the steam curling up, climb in, snuggle down into the water and experience that “AHHHHhhhhhhh”.

It doesn’t get any better than this.

Try it today or tonight!  I promise you’ll enjoy the sheer sensuousness and luxury like at no other time.

You’ll be a master of the art of hot tubbing in the rain.

And, thanks to Garth Stein and his wonderful book “The Art of Racing in the Rain” for this blog post title.  It’s soon to be a play at Book-It Repertory Theater.

There are some health conditions that would prevent outdoor soaking at lower temperatures.  If in doubt, consult your physician.

The Secret to Keeping Your Brain Sharper, Longer

Yes.  There is a secret to keeping your brain sharper, longer.  I’ll tell you what it is upfront.  It’s stress relief. Stress damages the brain in every way that cognition can be measured. That’s a fact.

We’re celebrating  Brain Awareness Week this week.  It’s a good time to talk about stress relief, hot tubbing and the effects on the brain.

There’s no bigger brain expert in the Northwest than Dr. John Medina who holds dual professorships at the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific.  We’ve been long time fans of his and have gone to his one day seminar on the brain.  Turns out, he is an Olympic Hot Tub Company customer! He and his wife own a hot tub from Olympic.

His book, “Brain Rules” is a must read for the health and preservation of your most precious asset-your brain.  In “Brain Rules” , he outlines 12 rules for taking care of your brain.

#3 is STRESS as in stress reduction!  Dr. Medina has documented the effects on the brain while under stress.  Learning is far diminished and the brain can’t function at it’s normal rate.

Did you know that stress damages cognition in every way that cognition can be measured? The human brain is designed to function when we’re walking 20 km a day and eating small bites along the way. That’s the opposite of what we do to ourselves in a sedentary world punctuated with big meals at long intervals.  To survive, the brain needs increased blood flow. Aerobic exercise is a key!  And, soaking, yes, soaking in your hot tub will help, too.

BIG NEWS: Hot tub soaking increases  circulation!

I’m not suggesting that you give up aerobic activity in favor of sitting and soaking. But think about the physiology of hot tub soaking.

When you’re immersed in hot water water, the volume of blood in your chest cavity and in your heart increases dramatically. This is due to the hydrostatic pressure on your body and the effects of being in a buoyant state.  Your heart’s ability to pump blood goes up, while at the same time, your heart rate goes down. Your cardiovascular system becomes far more efficient, and that affects just about every function of the human body including the brain.

BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK March 12-18, 2012  is a once a year reminder to take care of your marvelous, miraculous, incredible brain!  Don’t neglect it the rest of the year.  Aerobic exercise and stress relief by hot tubbing will keep your brain sharp, longer.
