Sleep Yourself Skinny: How to Lose Weight by Taking a Nightly Hot Tub Soak

Is this true? Sounds like a fairy tale or urban rumor.  But, according to research conducted at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, women who get at least seven hours of shut eye a night are getting beauty rest and more. They’re preventing significant weight gain over time. This study found that the likelihood of major weight gain-33 pounds or more-rose 32% for women who slept only five hours a night. These women were also 15% more likely to become obese than the longer sleepers.

Even after analysis of diet and activity levels of longer and shorter sleepers, scientists found no differences that explained why those who got less sleep weighed more. In fact, those who slept less also ate less, but they also tended to exercise less. It is possible that reduced slumber affects the number of calories burned at rest (basal metabolic rate) and translates into weight gain over time.

What’s the bottom line for weight loss? Getting a good night’s sleep is the best strategy for maintaining a healthy weight.

And, how to get that good night’s sleep? You can find many suggestions on the American Sleep Association website.  One of the best is to soak in your hot tub or hot bath at least 2 hours before bed for 15-20 minutes at 102-104 degrees. As your body cools, you’ll be ready for a deep relaxing sleep and that all important weight loss!

A bath tub will not give you the same benefit. There are no jets to relax you and the water does not say at 102-104 degrees for the twenty minutes soaking time required for deeper sleep.

For most adults, seven to eight hours is the prime amount of sleep to get a night, while kids and newborns require even more sleep.  As the NIH puts it, “how well rested you are and how well you function the next day depend on your total sleep time and how much of the various stages of sleep you get each night.”

According to a recent poll by the NSF, approximately 132 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders more than one a night a week. This number is rising! The growing number of sleep disorder centers across the nation (approximately 3,000 in the U.S. today) is proof that more people are sleepless and are desperate to do something about it.

Sleep researchers believe that many cases of insomnia can be traced to our hectic, stressful lifestyles. Even though you may enjoy perfect health, sleep deprivation can soon lead to a variety of ailments like heart disease, high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s according to the National Institutes of Health.

The results of sleep deprivation are varied and can include poor mental performance, battered nerves, grogginess, lapses in memory, depression, and even erratic mood swings. 6 Ways a Hot Tub at Home Will Gaurantee Better Health

Top 6 ways having a hot tub at home and using it will improve your health. In January most people’s thoughts turn to ways they can improve their health in the new year, but many have lost their focus by February. Want Better Sleep? Soak in Your Hot Tub Two Hours Before Bed

We went in our roof top hot tub Monday night not just before bed, but two hours before.  The timing of  the soak was significant. My husband I were very tired after a long day and, let’s admit it, quite a bit of socializing. We’d gone to a Seattle/Perugia  Sister City event at Dale Chihuly’s Warehouse studio (fabulous!) for wine & antipasti. Then rushed to Town Hall to hear the authors of  “SuperFreakanomics” talk about their new book (not worth the money).

We came home and climbed right into the hot tub.

We got out and watched a Japanese samurai movie until 11. By that time our body temperatures had re-set to normal after being heated in the hot tub.  As the body cools, it’s a signal that’s it’s time for sleep. Sometimes after going in the tub right at bed time, I get so hot and wide awake that I can’t sleep for awhile until I cool off. But Monday night the hot tub soak was perfectly timed.  We slept like babies and woke up feeling really refreshed. That’s one of the top blessings of having a Hot Spring Spa! Sleep, blessed sleep.

HOT TUB SOAKING BY MOONLIGHT

Last night it felt bitter cold dashing out to our Hot Spring Prodigy model wrapped only in a towel. But, sinking into the hot water up to our chins swept all memory of cold away. The full moon over our rooftop deck shone down so brightly that we didn’t need lights in or out of the tub. Jets on, steam rising, muscles relaxing, we had a heart to heart talk about the ups and downs of the day as we bobbled in the hot water.  (For the record we keep out winter time temperature at 104 degrees) .  So, a scare at the doctor’s turned out to be nothing ( what a relief!).  We owe less in taxes than we thought. And, the stock market may have hit bottom and begun to inch it’s way up.

There are all sorts of things to feel gratitude about. Life looked pretty good last night. And, hot tub soaking in the moonlight made it even better.

Life still looks rosy this morning. After soaking in the tub, I slept like a baby. The sun is shining. It’s great to live in Seattle. And, even better to own Olympic Hot Tub Company that makes our customers happy every day.
