The Art of Hot Tubbing in the Rain-5 Tips For A Better Rainy Night Soak

What’s with all this rain? I guess it’s normal, but it seems excessive. Doesn’t it? It’s not just rain. It’s hail, sleet, snow proving that winter’s  still here. The Seattle Times says it’s La Nina and we’ve got to get used to it.  Rain is forecast for today, tomorrow and through the weekend and beyond.

Let’s do better than endure this weather.

Let’s enjoy it and make the most of it by going out to the hot tub tonight rain, sleet, snow or not!

If you were wise enough to have placed your Hot Spring Spa right outside a door, you’re in luck. It may take some coaxing and convincing self-talk to convince yourself to run out to the tub in the cold, freezing rain in your bathing or birthday suit and jump in.  But, once you’re there, get ready for a fantastic hot tub soaking experience! And, you know you won’t feel the cold at all when you get out of the tub.

There are 5 things you must do before you go out in this rain. Plan ahead for a wonderful hot tub soak and master the art of hot tubbing in the rain:

1.     Put on a hat or grab an umbrella.  I don’t like the rain pouring down on my face nor soaking my hair. You probably don’t either. So take cover. A hat will protects your head from heat loss, too. For all about hats for the hot tub check out this post.  In case you didn’t know, the umbrella hat is a perennial favorite.

2.     Make some hot chocolate! That’s the perfect drink for the tub in weather like this. Cold drinks would be too much of a shock to your system tonight. Take the chocolate to the tub in a plastic cup. Don’t use ceramic or glass that might break.  Plan to drink the chocolate after you get out? Add some exotic flavor to give it a kick like Bailey’s Irish Cream, Cask & Caramel, Amaretto, Peppermint schnapps or Frangelico.

3.     Wear slippers. Yes, wear them. This is NOT the time to go bravely barefoot to the tub. You might slip-a bad thing. And you’ll likely track leaves & dirt into the tub if you trek out in bare feet-definitely not a good thing.

4.     Heat your terry cloth robe in the dryer to make the transition from your warm house to the tub easier. Ditto your towels so they’re toasty when you leave the tub.

5.     Wear extreme weather moisturizer on your face. There are many brands made for skiing and mountain climbing. If you don’t have any on hand, use Vaseline to protect your face from getting over-exposed to the cold. You don’t want those small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks to break from being too cold.

6.    Turn you hot tub into a therapy pool with Spazazz. Colorful and fragrant Spazazz Therapy Crystals set the mood, arouse emotion, and relax your state of mind and body. Whether it is romance, muscle therapy, or peace of mind, the benefits of aromatherapy are always desirable, so add a few capsules of Spazazz Crystals to your spa or hot tub before you soak.  These fantastic fragrances will enhance your spa experience by transporting you to a deeper relaxation.

Now, you’re ready.

Carefully walk out in the rain.  Lift the cover, see the steam curling up, climb in, snuggle down into the water and experience that “AHHHHhhhhhhh”.

It doesn’t get any better than this.

Try it today or tonight!  I promise you’ll enjoy the sheer sensuousness and luxury like at no other time.

You’ll be a master of the art of hot tubbing in the rain.

And, thanks to Garth Stein and his wonderful book “The Art of Racing in the Rain” for this blog post title.  It’s soon to be a play at Book-It Repertory Theater.

There are some health conditions that would prevent outdoor soaking at lower temperatures.  If in doubt, consult your physician.

Love to Hot Tub with A Good Book? 5 Tips To Make Hot Tub Reading Easier

Grab your rubber duck, caffeine of  choice, a good read and you’re set.  It’s time to celebrate National Read in the Tub Day which was yesterday, but I completely spaced it.

Why just February 9th? Why not read every day in the hot tub?

If you’re like me, you’ve dropped many a good book in the water.  Here’s the scoop on hot tub reading to make it easy to relax, read and keep your book dry while you soak:

1. WRAP YOUR KINDLE IN A PLASTIC BAG. For those of you who are afraid of dropping it in the water or getting it wet (a real concern), a zip lock plastic bag will keep your Kindle dry.  It may be a little hard to read through the plastic. Good thing you can adjust the type size!

2. GET A WATERPROOF KINDLE COVER. Here’s an easy and inexpensive solution:  get a waterproof Kindle cover so that you can make better use of your time in the hot tub and enjoy the time more besides!

Some covers protect your eReader from moisture and splashing (not waterproof)  and some claim to protect your device from complete submersion.  Take your pick.

3. DO THE OVER THE SIDE TWIST You can put your book or newspaper on the deck surrounding the hot tub and twist around to read it. Not too much fun and uncomfortable for a long read.

4. GET WATERPROOF BOOKS. In August 2004, Charles Melcher patented the Durabook, a process for making waterproof books. His company, Melcher Media, published “Poolside” ($14), an immersible collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway, Joyce Carol Oates, John Cheever and others.  Durabooks makes some great waterproof books some featuring short stories by noted authors as well as some spicier tales.

The best one? “The Beach Book” with stories set on beaches. This book is like a mini-vacation.

5. Grab an AQUA Reader.Trying to read in the hot tub is challenging.   Your book usually gets wet. Your arms get tired holding it aloft.

Print junkies rejoice!  The Aquareader offers a stable, buoyant place for books, magazines, and reports. There’s even a built-in cup holder. Reading material stays dry and secure while you stay warm and comfortable on cold fall nights sitting upright or lounging with shoulders at or below water level.

You may never leave the tub! Warn your significant other that you may develop prune-toes. Aquareader- a must have from Olympic Hot Tub Company.

Hot Tub on Valentine’s Day: How To Create A Memorable Evening

Here’s news to two-thirds of you men out there: Tuesday is Valentine’s Day. Yes, that Valentine’s Day – February 14.

This Valentine’s Day think bubbles not baubles.  It’s not the expense, it’s the thought that counts.  Make this a memorable Valentine’s Day. You don’t need reservations at a crowded restaurant. You need a few preparations for a cozy evening at home.  Just add water – to your Hot Spring Spa. Use your imagination. Or take some advice:

♥  Leave an invitation to the warm, wet rendezvous somewhere she’ll find it.

♥  Scrub the tub, light some candles, adjust the temperature, put some mood music on your iPod’s for the floating portable speaker, add some Spazzaz aromatherapy scents, splash in the moonlight under the stars, turn on the tub lights – maybe in a new color.

♥  Put some chilled San Pellegrino sparkling water or hot chocolate within reach, maybe some chocolate-covered strawberries or some Emily’s chocolate covered fortune cookies.

♥  Learn some Hand Reflexology techniques for a touching surprise in the tub.

♥  Try turning the jets off for a romantic sound of silence. after you’ve had a jet massage.

♥   Leave a bottle of wine, maybe Italian bubbly Proseco, on ice for an after-soak toast with some Fran’s Dark Chocolate Truffles – better than an energy-sapping heavy meal, even better than oysters.

Don’t have a hot tub? Then it’s time to get one.  Have a hot tub? Give her some new towels or fluffy terrycloth robes, with a new Spazazz or Magma Onsen Beppu scent for the warm aroma of romance.

Oh, and ladies – here’s your gift to him for this special moment:

♥    Don’t feel like you have to talk about your relationship.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Olympic!

Super Bowl Your Hot Tub. 9 Tips for Hosting A Great Party on Game Day!

SUPER BOWL YOUR HOT TUB!!

Submerging yourself in the heated water, surrounded by the massaging jets and your best pals is a great way to watch the Super Bowl if you don’t over do it!

Your Hot Spring Spa will give you the perfect seat to watch the action and guarantee everyone a great time if you follow these tips:

1. CHECK YOUR HOT TUB SUPPLIES NOW! There’s nothing worse than going for a dip, opening the lid and finding skanky water and realizing you’re out of supplies to clear it up.  Missing shock, SilkBalance or chlorine?  Get to an Olympic Hot Tub store today or tomorrow and re-stock.  With company coming for the Super Bowl, you’ll want your hot tub clean and ready to go.  Stock up NOW knowing you’ll have enough to have clean, clear water in your hot tub for the big game. Better to be stocked up than scrambling.

2. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HOT TUB DURING THE GAME. Keep the water chemistry in balance and sanitizer levels up. You want your friends to come back, don’t you? An unbalanced, unsanitized hot tub can lead to real problems for all hot tubbbers. A temperature of 102 is a good starting place for most people.  Make sure that you and your guests get out before you get over-heated!

3. CLEAN YOUR FILTERS BEFORE THE PARTY.  Use our SeaKlear Spa Filter Cleaner Spray a liquid product that greatly improves filter life and efficiency.  It is specially made to cleanse body oil & lotions from spa cartridge filters.  Used regularly it will extend filter life and assures proper filtration.  If they’re over 2-3 years old, you’re in need of new ones.  Stop by an Olympic Hot Tub store for new filters or filter cleaner for you Hot Spring Spa today or tomorrow.

4. MAINTAIN THE WATER LEVEL.  Water does evaporate more rapidly off the hot tub surface during cold, dry weather.  Make sure that the water is above the skimmer line so you’ll have continued filtration and operational jets.  With more soakers, that water level will go down fast.

5. DRINKS. Save the alcohol for after soaking.  I know that sounds so boring! My advice? Have a selection of bottled waters, juices and sodas on hand to keep soakers hydrated while soaking.  Alcohol? Alcohol is a depressant while hot water is a stimulant. As you sit in hot water your metabolism is reved up faster than normal.  Alcohol’s effects are felt much more quickly in a hot tub. Drink alcohol and a major hangover is a sure thing the next day.  Save wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks for after soaking.  You don’t want your guests to regret the day they accepted your invitation.

6. PARTY FOOD. KEEP IT ON THE LIGHT SIDE.  Stick to finger food that can be eaten in or out of the tub.  What works best for hot tub parties?  Easy to eat items like veggies & dip, fresh fruit on skewers, chicken or shrimp kabobs, egg rolls, fresh rolls, spring rolls.  Avoid chips-potato, corn, extra crunchy whatever- in the tub.  If spilled, all chips make a party ending, gummy mess!

7. EXTRA TOWELS-A MUST.  You can never have enough towels! Guests may get in and out of the tub multiple times, leading to damp towels that stop doing their job.  Keep lots of clean, fresh towels on hand and stay on top of putting wet towels in the washer & dryer.  Your guests will love you for it and so will your upholstered lawn furniture, carpets & floors.

8. ADD MUSIC  & ACCESSORIES!  Make your hot tub area festive. With the right hot tub accessories, you can make your Super Bowl hot tub experience super enjoyable. Why not add a new step, safety rail, or a towel rack?  There are a variety of hot tub accessories that you can add to your hot tub to make it convenient, stylish and more enjoyable.  Check out our other party tips here. Call the Olympic Hot Tub store nearest you for ideas. Check out our estore for the latest hot tub  accessories.

9. HAVE FUN :-)If you, the host, aren’t having a good time, your guests won’t either. Sit back, relax and have a ball at your own Super Bowl Hot Tub Party. You can never foresee all of the problems that can and do arise, so just go with the flow. Your guests will appreciate your attitude to the day and have fun themselves.

Hot Tub Bliss-5 Tips for Setting Up the Perfect Hot Tub Experience

Everyone’s looking for perfection. And, on a daily basis.

It’s true that for many people being in a hot tub is the closest thing to perfection they’re apt to find in their daily life, but it can always get better, right?!

Check out these 5 ways to create the perfect hot tub environment! The right temperature, mood, company, refreshments and soak time will increase your enjoyment and put you on the road to hot tub perfection.

  1. Temperature- The optimum temperature for getting the most out of your backyard vacation is between 100 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit.  Experiment within this range to find the perfect setting for your most enjoyable hot tub experience. My husband and I find that our hot tub temperature varies with the outside temperature. The colder it is, the hotter we like it. In the summer we turn it down.  An old teacher of mine said that “consciousness loves contrast”.  Right now we’ve set the temp at 104°. Yes, it does seem really hot when we first get in, but in a few minutes feels just right with the cold night air on our faces.
  1. Mood- Wash away the day in your hot tub. Go from grumpy to mellow in a few minutes.  I think a hot tub is best enjoyed after a hard day at work when you really need it or right before bed. Although, there are some ardent morning fans, too.  We turn off the lights and simply gaze up at the stars-trying to decide which is a star and which is a planet. We light some candles, too, and place them around the hot tub to provide a romantic ambiance for our rooftop escape. Adding some aromatherapy scents to the soak further enhances relaxation. Just make sure though that the product is specifically made for use in hot tubs. Go to our estore for the absolute best aromatherapy products “Being” which are especially formulated for hot tubs. Being isn’t greasy, won’t screw up your water chemistry AND the scents are heavenly.  Being scents include: Enlighten with Lemon, Cypress, and Basil;  Reflect with Lavender and Geranium; Uplift with Green Tea, Ginger and Lime; Awaken with Tangerine and Grapefruit; and, Release with Chamomile and Clary Sage.  Order today from our E-Store.
  1. Company- What would the essence of a hot tub experience without someone to share it with? The soothing warmth of the water is best enjoyed in the company of a loved one I think. The setting creates an ideal opportunity for quiet conversation.  My husband and I never run out of things to talk about in our Hot Spring Spa. It’s so relaxing that any potential disagreements get melted away before they flare into argument.
  1. Refreshments- It is important to stay hydrated during the soak, but alcohol is not hydrating and not recommended. Alcohol in the tub creates some adverse health risks. Many people do drink wine, beer or something stronger when they first get a new tub. Typically they feel so awful the next day that they’re cured from every drinking in the tub again. The relaxation and, perhaps, detoxification are the chief benefits of hot tubing, so try light beverages. Even some of the new relaxation drinks.  We like icy cold San Pellegrino or iced tea in summer.

5.  Soak Time- Not too long; not too short. 20 Minutes is just about right. Medical Studies have shown that over-exposure to excess heat is dangerous to one’s body, so don’t risk it. A moderate soak in a hot tub is advised. Limit the time to twenty minutes or so. You can always come back for a second or third dip. The benefits of improved circulation, cardiac output and purifying your body toxins make it so worthwhile.  I had a nasty fall a few months ago which was quite painful, i.e. I could barely walk or sit in a chair. I stayed in bed all the next day except for 3 trips to the hot tub for 20 minutes each time.  The result: pain greatly diminished and I could walk and sit without wincing!

Talk about a miracle cure!

So, forget that pending resort or spa jaunt or that expensive trip to Paris next year. For real perfection, enjoy a vacation right in your backyard everyday!  The hot tub is a gift you’ll open everyday!

Create your own backyard sanctuary now by installing a hot tub which will give you years of enjoyment with family and friends.

And, you’re just in time for our Year End Clearance Sale on all hot tubs and saunas including demos & floor models. Hurry into one of our stores for the best selection.

What Are You Drinking in the Hot Tub? Ever Tried Relaxation Drinks?

Note to Wives: Put Your Husband in the Hot Tub at the First Sign of an Argument!

What Are You Drinking in the Hot Tub? Ever Tried “Relaxation” Drinks?

What are you drinking in the hot tub?

Well! That’s a personal question, isn’t it?

I’m just wondering if anyone’s tried relaxation beverages (!) in the hot tub to deepen their experience. It’s the time of year when we’re all grasping at straws trying to find something to help us relax more quickly, more deeply.

The energy drink craze has created an offshoot of hip new sips. Sales of relaxation beverages, which contain herbal supplements, known for their soothing effects are increasing a market report shows.

Can you really sip your way to serenity or a better night’s sleep? Will sipping one of these drinks in the hot tub increase your relaxation?

Here are 4 drinks to consider if you’d like to find out what the buzz (I meant, calm!)  is all about:

  1. Unwind. At $35 for twelve cans, this drink had had better be calming. See the claims at Frontier Beverage.  Restores calm to your stress filled day they say.
  2. Just Chill. $8.00 for four cans.  Try tropical Just Chill and relax say enthusiasts. Natural stress relief in a premium soda they say.
  3. Dream Water. $20 for six at Drink Dream Water. This one comes with the biggest press. Many fans say they drink it before bed, sleep like a rock and wake up energized. That would be a miracle if true. Named best relaxation shot for 2011!
  4. Mini chill. $18. for six cans at Minichill. Feel more focused and less frazzled say fans of Minichill. It’s the energy drink opposite.

Sip Smart: Consume these drinks with caution especially in the hot tub. The hot water increases your circulation, which will make the effects felt more quickly. The combination of ingredients in these beverages may cause negative interactions and/or affect other supplements or meds you’re taking. Never mix these drinks with alcohol or use while pregnant. And, of course, save the alcohol for after hot tubbing.

If you try any of these or others while relaxing in your Hot Spring Spa from Olympic Hot Tub, share your thoughts. Let us know what you experiences were. Did you relax more quickly? Get a buzz-that is get zipped instead of relaxed? Did sipping a relaxation beverage add significantly to your relaxation experience?

Hot Tub Daily to Cope with Holiday Stress

Holidays stress getting you down?Stress builds up when you feel you’re too busy, don’t have enough leisure time to relax and unwind, or enough “quality time” to reconnect with family and friends.

These feelings can certainly be exaggerated during the holidays.

How to cope with all that stress?

Make time to use your Hot Spring Spa every day for quality time with your family, improved health, stress reduction and rejuvenation this holiday season. Here are some ways that savvy hot tub owners use their hot tubs during the holidays to cope with stress:

Romantic Getaway
Leave a note for your loved one suggesting a rendezvous after work..in your hot tub! Light candles, play some quiet music and enjoy each others company alone under the stars in the privacy of your own backyard.

Family Retreat
PTA meetings, soccer games and ballet lessons…can’t seem to spend enough time together as a family? Arrange for a “meeting” in your hot tub-it’s the perfect place to reconnect and talk about the day. Children grow up before you know it. Spending some time with your teenager in the shot tub can open up long closed lines of communication many Hot Spring Spa owing parents say.

Star Gazing Haven
Your outdoor hot tub provides the perfect front-row seat under the stars. Don’t waste a clear night in Puget Sound this winter when you could be watching the constellations. Get the Star Walk app for your i-phone and you’ll find get to know every star in the heavens. Go to the Stardate website to see what’s in the night sky week by week.

Workout Therapy Center
Warm water exercise is a gentle way to exercise joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water reduces body weight by 90% relieving pressure on joints and muscles (perfect for people affected by arthritis or fibromyalgia). Water also serves as resistance to help build muscle strength.

Wake-up Call
Enjoy your spa in the morning with a cup of tea or coffee. Just 10 minutes at 102°F will energize you. Stay in longer and you may start to feel too relaxed to “get up and go”.  Many hot tub owners prefer winter wake ups in the tub to ease gently into their day. They report that watching the birds and enjoying a short “nature break” before beginning their hectic schedules makes them feel better all day.

Your Space for Solitude
Being alone to think and regain your emotional equilibrium is the best antidote to holiday stress. Your hot tub is the perfect place to relax, “do nothing” and get away from it all.

Greet the New Year
Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? The #1 answer for Olympic Hot Tub owners is in their hot tub in their own backyard. Soak in heavenly peace and quiet in your own HOT SPRING SPA. Contemplate the year ahead as you compose your resolutions.

Hot Tub Etiquette: Everything You Need to Know To Entertain With Ease

Hot Tub Etiquette.

Here’s the definitive guide of everything you need to know to hot tub entertain without stress.  When everyone is on the same page as far as expected behavior, life goes more smoothly.  I last published our hot tub etiquette advice on Hot Tub Bliss in 2009.  It remains one of the most popular posts so I decided to update it and send it out again because new hot tub owners are constantly asking about the dos & don’ts of  hot tubbing with friends.

Here’s the scene: You’ve just purchased a new hot tub.  You’ve invited friends over for a test dip.  The hot tub’s hot and ready to go….but before that test dip, here are a few tips to make your experience and theirs a perfect one.

Before your hot tub party:

1. Nude or not nude? Be sure to let your guests know what the rules of the “house” are. There is nothing more embarrassing than having your guests strip to the buff when you and your partner have opted for suits or vice versa! If you’ve opted for nudity, it is really important to tell your guests when you invite them date so they have a chance to decline if nudity’s not their thing. As gracious hosts, you want your guests to be comfortable. A mix of suits and nudity doesn’t work for either group.  Either way, do only what’s comfortable for you! Check out our post:  “Nude or Not Nude”.

2. Opted for suits? An important tip. If suits are worn, make sure you tell your guests to rinse theirs thoroughly in plain water.  Most suits carry soap power residue from the washing machine! Even a small amount of soap powder can cause a mountain of bubbly foam when the jets are turned on. It’s hard to get rid of all that foam and its very ugly to look at.

3. B. Y. O. T. It’s a great idea to ask guests bring their own towels and take them home for drying. Eliminating a big stack of laundry to wash & dry is a winning idea.

4. Shower before soaking, please. Ask all guests to do a quick rinse off before soaking. Washing all of the lotion, deodorant & sweat down the drain instead of leaving it behind in the tub will help keep your new hot tub water clean.

At the party:

5. Open cuts & sores? Make it a rule to stay out if you have open cuts or sores (and ask guests to do the same) and never discuss your scars! Ditto about asking others about their birthmarks, warts or scars.

6. Love in the tub? If you’re with your lover, hold the passions until you reach dry land. Intimacy is best done in private.

7. No foamy stuff, please! Ask guests to refrain from adding bubble bath, bath oil or any foreign substances to the hot tub. If  suds do foam up, reach for the SeaKlear Clarifier and follow these tips.

8. Photo op?Not a great idea. Don’t take pictures without getting everyone’s permission first. Better yet, don’t take pictures. There’s nothing drearier than showing the office gang the photos of your Saturday night hot tub party.

9. What to serve? Light finger foods especially fruit are the best choices when soaking and make good party fare for guests. Note: potato chips are the worst thing to eat in a hot tub.  Potato chips or other snack foods (crackers, goldfish) if spilled accidentally into the hot tub make a gummy mess that’s hard to clean up.

10. Save alcohol for after soaking. Alcohol in the tub can be deadly. Hot water is a stimulant and alcohol a depressant on your system. Alcohol’s effects are felt very swiftly in a hot tub at 104°.
