8 Tips To Make Your Favorite Swimsuit Last Longer

Woman in one piece bathing suit on a beachHot water and chlorine are hard on swim suits.   Swimsuits aren’t cheap and a perfect one is hard to find.  So when you find the perfect one you’ll want to wear for years,  take steps to make it last longer than one season.

Avoid the things you might be doing to your bathing suit that could actually shorten its lifespan.

According to ConsumerSearch.com, damage happens largely because suits are made of Spandex or other stretchy fabrics — materials that can react badly to hot tub chemicals or the heat of the sun.  The fabric that makes them cling just right to your body makes them vulnerable to heat and harsh chemcials.

To keep your suit looking good for years to come, care for it using these eight tips from laundry pros:

Rinse ASAP
About.com Laundry Guide Mary Marlowe Leverette points out suits need a rinse even after  sunbathing.  Sunblock and the body’s oils can do damage.  Rinse immediately after being in a hot tub or pool that uses chlorine.

Hand Wash
All the experts we found recommended hand washing. One pro told Allure magazine, the issue with washing machines is that they agitate all the delicate parts (like the cups, padding, ties, etc.).  All this movement can damage a delicate suit, leaving things bunched, stretched, or otherwise ill-fitting.

Soap Up
The retail website SwimsuitsForAll.com recommends washing a suit with a mild hand soap, while Allure suggests a detergent meant for delicates.  Either way, a standard laundry detergent is too harsh.  Make sure you rinse all soapy suds out. And, I mean rinse.  You don’t want to see mounds of foam the next time you hot tub.

Dry Off
Resist the urge to wring out every last drop of water. Doing so can damage the fibers, says SwimsuitsForAll.com, leaving your suit sagging in all the wrong places.  Hanging a swimsuit (especially by the ties) can stretch it out, too.  Instead, lay the suit out on a towel, roll the towel up and squeeze gently, then lay your swimsuit out to dry.  Avoid drying it in sunshine, which can fade the color, says Leverette.  Always dry the suit out completely before putting it away.

Rotate Suits
According to Real Simple, Spandex is a “memory fabric,” meaning it needs a full day to snap back to its usual position.  If you’re on vacation or wearing bathing suits often, it’s essential to have more than one, so that each suit has 24 hours to bounce back (not to mention time to wash and dry it completely).

Keep Cool
Hot water is bad for swimwear.  Never wash your bathing suit in hot water, and avoid too many dips in the hot tub with a favorite suit.  Hot tub daily? Allure recommends reserving one suit just for the hot tub — and make it your cheapest suit!

Prep A New Suit
Swimsuit designer Vix Swimwear recommends prepping a brand new suit before taking it to the beach or a dip in the hot tub.  A 30-minute soak in a vinegar and water mixture (one tablespoon white vinegar per quart of water) should prevent dye from bleeding.  Especially important if you’re wearing a new suit in a hot tub.

Sit On A Towel
Whenever you’re sitting on the ground next to the hot tub or pool, on a wooden bench, or on any other rough surface, try to sit on a towel, suggests the blog Life With Three. Those impromptu seats can snag and tear the material. If carrying a towel 24/7 seems too high maintenance, simply wrap-up in a sarong when you leave your lounge chair — you’ll never even have to think about where you’re sitting (though the sarong will take the brunt of the blow, so make sure you won’t mind snagging it).

Of course, while hot tubbing, there’s always the no suit option!

Save The Whales While Soaking In Your Hot Tub-Here’s How

Orca pod sighted in Admiralty Inlet, Puget SoundDo you live on or near the water in Puget Sound?

Have you had the thrill of hearing whales while soaking in your hot tub?

Would you like to know what you can do to save the whales in Puget Sound?

When one Olympic Hot Tub hot tub owner heard the whales from her hot tub, she was so moved that she and her husband started a non-profit to help the Orcas in Puget Sound.

Read on about her work and how you can help.

Here’s a letter from Susan Berta, Whidbey Island Hot Spring Jetsetter owner about her efforts to monitor whales traveling through the sound:

“I have been a Hot Spring Spa owner for many years, & have referred others to your wonderful spas. I have a request for other hot tub owners that live on or near the water in Puget Sound.

We have a non-profit organization, Orca Network, and track whales throughout Puget Sound & BC Waters. We sometimes get the thrill of listening to whales pass by in the night while we are soaking in our Hot Spring Spa.

We’d like to encourage others who have hot tubs near the water to listen for whale spouts in the night, and report them to our whale-sighting network at 1-866-ORCANET, or info@orcanetwork.org. You can help us gather valuable data on our beloved Orcas and gray whales if you just let us know when you are lucky enough to have whales swim by while you’re soaking – how much better can it get?!! Thnk you for your help!”

Thanks to Susan for sharing her passion for the Orcas and her efforts to help them thrive in Puget Sound.  She’s done an amazing job of raising the public’s awareness about these wonderful creatures.  Gov. Jay Inslee declared June 2013 as the 7th Annual Orca Awareness Month.

Whales are seen everyday from May through October in Puget Sound.  If you’re fortunate enough to spot one or a pod, before you report a sighting, go to the Orca network website and the questions about the whales you’ve spotted.  Doing that will be a big help for Orca researchers.  Check out this link before your next soak so you’ll know what to look for.

And, remember to keep the Orca Network phone number near your hot tub to report sightings. 1-866-ORCANET (672-2638).

Have you seen or heard Orcas or gray whales from your hot tub? Tell us about it!

Want to Heat Up Your Relationship? Get A Hot Tub!

The couple that hot tubs together stays togetherRefreshing Relationships.   The couple that tubs together….

Many Olympic Hot Tub hot tub buyers have figured out how to connect regularly amid a busy, stressful life.

How do they do it? By making time for each other and that gets a lot easier when that time is in a wet, warm relaxing hot tub.

It’s multitasking without the tasking – you each get the health benefits, emotional balm and soothing relaxation of the soak, and your relationship reaps the benefits. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals just issued a press release highlighting the ways that smart couples have figured out how to stay connected.

Here are 3 main ways that tubbing together  strengthens your relationship:

  • Alone Together with No distractions.

The walls of the hot tub don’t just hold water – they surround you and your partner with a well-defined “in here” safe from “out there.” The cellphones, the laptops, the annoying people, the to-do lists are all somewhere “out there” across the lawn, and the two of you are alone together “in here.” So relax and remember what you love about being together.

  • A Place to Chill.

You know the hot tub helps your tense muscles relax. Your body feels better after a soothing soak. The same thing happens to your mind and your emotions. Worries and tension can float away, providing a calm space for just being with your partner.

  • Away from it all.

You could spend hundreds or thousands of dollars, pack suitcases and travel to distant resorts in order to escape distractions and reduce stress. Or you could leave a note for your partner to meet you in the hot tub after work, and get the same effect with a walk across the yard. What happens next is up to you…..

Hot Tub Safety Tips: The Child You Save May Be Your Own

Safety-of-Children-in-Hot-TubsThe Child You Save May Be Your Own.

How true.  Most accidents happen at home.

May is National Drowning Awareness Month.  As we go into the summer months where children are going to be around spas & hot tubs,  it’s a good time to revisit child safety.

It’s natural to find a hot tub or spa irresistible. It can also be dangerous if you’re a child.  Did you know that drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for ages 5 and younger?  The hot tub owner has a duty to be vigilant and diligent so that no child ever comes close to such an accident in your yard.

Here are the key ways you can make your hot tub or spa safe:

WATCH.

Never leave a child alone, out of visual supervision, in or near the spa or hot tub. Not even for a second. No matter how many swimming lessons or how much experience they have. Never allow anyone, no matter how old, to soak without a spotter nearby. Make sure nothing obstructs your view of the spa or hot tub along the line of sight from the house.

LATCH.

When you can’t watch, lock the door or gate to the spa.  The area should be completely enclosed, and make sure no furniture or objects are nearby that a child could climb to top the wall. Keep the doors from the house to the spa area shut and latched, with knobs out of reach of toddlers.  Always lock the cover straps on your Hot Spring Spa cover after you leave the tub.

CATCH.

Follow manufacturer’s directions for safe use of your cover. Remove it completely before using the spa or hot tub. No one should walk or crawl on a floating cover.  If you have an in-ground spa or hot tub, keep toys away so the playing child isn’t attracted to them and falls in accidentally.  For the tops in safe covers consider a Covana with a hard shell top that locks out children and intruders.

TEACH.

Establish “rules of the house” and set a good example yourself! No playful screaming for help (false alarms) that might mask a real emergency. No running or pushing near the hot tub. No diving or jumping into a hot tub. No playing on top of the hot tub cover. They do not support a child’s weight. No playing the “hold your breath underwater” game. No dunking!

I don’t want to sound like a grumpy, spoil sport, but kids do need to be taught and shown what good hot tub manners are.

BE PREPARED.

Have a phone handy to call local emergency numbers if an accident happens.  Know where all electrical switches and circuit breakers for hot tub equipment and lights are located and how to turn them off in an emergency. Learn how to perform CPR. Keep a First Aid kit close by.

Your hot tub or spa is for fun and relaxation.  Knowing that you’ve created a safe space for children will increase your peace of mind and make your hot tub the relaxing place is should be.

Health through water or as the Romans said it SANUM PER AQUA.

Hot Tub Buyers Guide: 8 Reasons to Take a Test Soak Before You Buy

Hot Tub Buyers Guide: Don’t Get Soaked. 7 Tips To Help YOU Buy The RIGHT One The First Time

How To Buy The Best How Tub? Secret Shopping Tips From Hot Tub Sales Pros

Get Ready to Host A Great Memorial Day Party

Flags & Hydrangas for Memorial Day DecorationMemorial Day is the kick off to backyard entertaining here in the Northwest.  The weather forecast doesn’t look great for the weekend, but with a hot tub as the party centerpiece everyone will be prepared for a good time regardless of the weather.  Everyone is already psyched to have a good time when they’re invited to a hot tub party.

Get started now. Follow these  10 Tips to create a fun hot tub party with great memories:

10. Invite the Fun People in Your Life-Omit the Grumps

Some friends will want to get in the hot tub, and others will be content to hang out by the snack table all night. Make your guest list according to which friends you think will have the most fun at your hot tub party. Keep in mind the maximum occupancy of your tub, so you don’t leave any guests sitting out in the cold. Especially with the weather predicted to be in the low 60s.

9. Clean, Clear Water

Just as you’d clean your house before a big party, make sure your hot tub water is clean and sparkling before guests arrive. Check your supplies and make sure you have clarifier and sanitizer on hand. You want your guests to go “aah” with delight when you roll back the cover, not “yuck!”  Remember to check the hot tub periodically to make sure sanitizer levels are adequate.

8. Have a Plan B

Bad weather, a power outage, or crabby guests- you never know what could crop up to spoil your hot tub fun so plan other activities just in case you can’t go in the hot tub.

7. Party Food: Keep it on the Light Side

Stick to finger food that can be eaten in or out of the tub. Easy to eat items like veggies & dip, fresh fruit on skewers, chicken or shrimp kabobs, egg rolls, etc work best.  Avoid chips in the tub. If spilled, they make a party ending, gummy mess!

6. Drinks: Save the Alcohol for After Soaking

Have a selection of bottled waters, juices and sodas on hand to keep soakers hydrated while soaking. Alcohol? Alcohol’s effects are felt much more quickly in a hot tub-over consumption and a major hangover is a sure thing the next day. Save wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks for after soaking. You don’t want your guests to rue the day they accepted your invitation.

5. Provide Extra Bathing Suits

Most people are self-conscious around strangers. Some guests might “forget” their suits” in order to avoid soaking. Once they see all the fun everyone’s having, they’ll want to jump in, too. Have a selection of extra bathing suits and swim trunks on hand for guests who left their suits at home. Shop EBay or outlet stores for bargains.

4. Extra Towels for the Thoughtful Touch

You can never have enough towels! Guests may get in and out of the tub multiple times, leading to damp towels that stop doing their job. Keep lots of clean, fresh towels on hand and stay on top of putting wet towels in the washer & dryer. Your guests will love you for it and so will your upholstered lawn furniture.

3. Add Hot Tub Accessories, Games and Door Prizes and Consider a Theme for your Party

Patriot Duck makes a great party favor for your Memorial Day Party.

Patriot Duck makes a great party favor for your Memorial Day Party.

All of the action will be centered around your hot tub, so pick up fun party favors, small door prizes, ducks for everyone to race, waterproof cards, floating checkerboards, etc. Solar powered lanterns are a beautiful way to light up the night. The Hawaiian theme is always in style. Waterproof leis add to the fun.

2. Cue the Soundtrack: Music is Must

Every party needs a soundtrack. Many newer Hot Spring Spas have wireless music and an iPod docking station. Choose your music with your guests’ taste in mind. Throw in some songs that add pizzazz to your party’s theme.  If your hot tub doesn’t have music, check out  Olympic Hot Tub’s portable speaker: the Outcast.

1. Have Fun

If you, the host, aren’t having a good time, your guests won’t either. Sit back, relax and have a ball at your own hot tub party. You can never foresee all of the problems that can and do arise, so just go with the flow. Your guests will appreciate your approach to the evening and have fun themselves. And, do remember what Memorial Day stands for.

That’s the recipe for a great hot tub party!
