Hot Tub Bliss Blog Celebrates 600th Post of Everything You Need to Know About Hot Tubbing

After more than four years of Hot Tub Bliss Blog, I’ve reached the 600-post milestone.  I though it would be fun to share the list of the Top 10 most-read posts:

10. “Stress Headache Relief Formula: Hot Tub + Coffee + Ibuprofen.” Readers must suffer lots of headaches. Maybe it’s the economy, or just normal life, as the poet said: “Show me someone who’s never had a headache, and I’ll show you someone who’s never lived.” Plenty of people opened this post and found out that the combination works better than any of the three treatments alone.

9. “Suffer from Fibromyalgia? Use a Hot Tub Regularly to Ease Pain, Improve Sleep & Mood.” The invisible, chronic symptoms of fibromyalgia don’t just go away, but lifestyle modifications – including tub soaks – can help conserve energy and minimize pain.

8. “Hot Tub Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes Reduces Sugar Levels and Improves Sleep.” More than 5 million Americans suffer from Type 2 diabetes, and many of them work to reduce symptoms and conquer the illness without medication.  Hot tubs can help.  And, that’s a fact proven by research.  If you or anyone you know suffers from Type 2 diabetes, start hot tubbing!

7. “What’s the #2 Reason People Hate Their Hot Tubs?” The surprise answer: Hot tub noise. Noisy hot tubs make bad neighbors, intrude on your solitude and can ruin your relaxation.  More and more people are waking up to this fact and having their sleep literally disturbed by a neighbor’s noisy hot tub.

6. “How to Claim Your Hot Tub as a Medical Deduction on your 2011 Return.”

If you’re medical insurance won’t pay for your hot tub, maybe the IRS will allow a medical deduction for it. If you have a doctor’s prescription and follow a few rules, that’s a real possibility! It won’t hurt to check it out.  You can always ask. They may or may not say no!

5. “Cloudy Hot Tub Water? Learn How to clear it Up Now!” This cleared up a relaxation-inhibiting problem for lots of readers.  Cloudy water is the bane of thousands if not millions of hot tub owners. If you’re one with perpetually cloudy water, read this post & end it forever-guaranteed!.

4. “Hot Tub Etiquette – Everything You Need to Know to Entertain with Ease.” It’s nice to have such polite readers. New hot tub owners want a handy guide to put their guests at ease, and visitors want to know what’s OK and what’s not when they’re invited to a friend’s tub. All the answers here.

3. “How To Get Insurance to Pay for Hot Tub Therapy.” If you have a diagnosed medical condition, insurance might pay for home hot tub treatments. Many people suffer from some of the hundreds of medical issues that can be eased with hot tubbing, and insurance companies often appreciate the benefits by reimbursing you for your purchase.

2. “Hot Tub in Hot Weather to Stay Cool.” High temperatures across the country for the past two summers drove many readers to learn how hot tubbing is cool.

Drum roll, please. The most-read Hot Tub Bliss blog post is:

1. “Public Hot Tubs – 7 Tips You Must Know Before You Soak.” People want to know how to tell whether public hot tubs are safe and clean. People who don’t have their own hot tub yet need to learn the signs, and even hot tub owners need to recognize the pitfalls of public soaking.

Thanks to you my loyal readers for reading Hot Tub Bliss, sending your suggestions & posting your comments. Was your favorite post not on the list? Share it in the comments section, won’t you?

Here’s to the next 600 posts!  Don’t worry – I won’t run out of ideas. They keep bubbling up. Hot tubbing is always inspirational, right?

Olympic Hot Tub Wins Territory Dealer of the Year Award from Hot Spring Spas

Olympic Hot Tub Company once again – for the eighth time – has won the Territory Dealer of the Year of the Award from Hot Spring that’s out of 40 dealers with 52 locations!  I accepted the 2011 honor from Steve Hammock, Watkins Manufacturing’s president (mfgs of Hot Spring), at the Hot Spring Dealer Meeting in Orlando, Florida.  Steve asked me if we had any wall space left!  That’s Steve second from right.  Others in the photo are from left to right: Mike Dunn, Watkins VP, Blair Osborn, my husband and Olympic’s  President, me, Don Riling, Olympic’s VP and on the far right Troy, Scott our Hot Spring rep of 11 years. (Admittedly this is last year’s photo. This year’s did not turn out, alas).

The plaque joins our collection gathered since Hot Spring launched its award program in 1992, when we won the company’s highest honor, the Locksin Thompson Award.  We won that one again in 2006 – only one other dealer has two of those.  We also have two of Hot Spring’s Retail Excellence for Best Marketing & Promotions, and we took Best Service Department in 2008.

Territory Dealer of the Year means we were tops in professionalism, customer satisfaction, sales achievement, product knowledge and top rated aftermarket service. Watkins Manufacturing makes Hot Spring, the world’s No. 1 selling brand of portable spas.

The award, recommended by our Hot Spring rep Troy Scott, recognizes that we’re on board with all of Watkins’ products, use the company’s tools and programs and represent the product well in our area.  Our website is one of the best in the industry, and our social media efforts are exceptional – here’s your chance to Like our Facebook page!  And, nothing says “satisfied customer” like the number of second, third and fourth systems we sell.

We know it’s the teamwork and dedication from each member of our staff that keeps Olympic Hot Tub at the top. The effort our staff puts in every day is what keeps our customers happy and keeps our company No. 1.  This prize proves it. A big, big  THANK you to all of our staff!  You’ve earned it.

Top 10 Posts on Hot Tub Bliss for 2011

Drum roll, please! As the last days of the year pass by, it’s time to announce the most popular posts on  Hot Tub Bliss for 2011.

1. Hot tub water care is ever the mysterious art for many hot tub owners. That’s why “Cloudy Hot Tub Water? Clear it up NOW. Use SeaKlear Natural Clarifier” was in the number one spot from May 2nd.

2. Must be a lot of headaches going around! Just the usual worries: the economy, the economy, and the economy gave our readers plenty to get headaches over.  Our post from April 22nd:  “Stress Headache Relief Formula:  Hot Tub + Coffee + Ibuprofen” came in at number two. And, by the way, it may sound too good to be true, but this formula really works to relieve stress headaches faster than using any of the three remedies used separately.

3.  No one wants a noisy hot tub.  Don’t want to annoy your neighbors or your sound sleep with a clunky hot tub that cycles on and off during the night? Get a no-noise Hot Spring Spa.  It’s the only brand that is “silent running” when heating and filtering.  No noise; no vibration.  News of a quiet hot tub piqued the interest of many prospective buyers. That’s why our post “Hot Tub Noise” from May 16th came in at number 3.

4. The news that hot tubbing was good for chronic back pain was of great interest to Hot Tub Bliss readers. Back pain is the number 2 reason people go to the doctor in this country after colds & flu. Hot tubbing can relieve that stubborn back pain naturally with heat and jets that hasten relaxation.  Many say that using a hot tub can reduce or eliminate pain medication, too.  Medical studies back this up which is  why our post “Chronic Back Pain? Take a Hot Tub Soak for Lasting Relief” from April 25th came in at number 4.

5. Energy efficiency is top of mind when it comes to buying a hot tub.  Who doesn’t want an energy efficient hot tub that performs well and looks good? How about one that plugs into a standard wall outlet and is also easy care?  Add a low price to all of those benefits and we really piqued our readers interest with our post from April 15th  “Energy Efficient Hot Tub Plugs Into Wall Outlet.  Durable & Reliable Freeflow Spas are Affordable and Easy Care “.  I guess that on tax day people were looking for good news about anything!

6. The pain of fibromyalgia is constant but can be soothed by hot tubbing.  Many of our Olympic Hot Tub owners who have fibromyalgia report that their symptoms were improved with regular hot tub soaking.  Some use their hot tubs 2 and 3 times a day to keep intense pain at bay.  Many report better sleep and using less pain medication and sleeping better with regular hot tub soaks.  If you or anyone you know suffers from this debilitating condition, check out our post from May 30th “Suffer From Fibromyalgia? Use a Hot Tub Regularly to Ease Pain, Improve Sleep and Mood”.

7. Hot tub safety for kids was on the mind of many parents before Memorial Day. We answered the questions and gave the tips for how to be smart about hot water safety in “Hot Tub Safety for Kids: How to Have Fun With out Accidents.” on May 22nd. It’s a good post to bookmark. Safety rules never change and you’ll want to reread them before bar-b-que season starts in the late spring.

8.  The pain of arthritis is always present for many here in the Northwest, but a hot tub can help! That’s why our post from May 9th “Hot Tub for Arthritis Pain” was in the top 10. This post detailed a way of using the hot tub that was safe and effective for arthritis sufferers and included our easy to do hot tub exercises.  Doctors advise those with arthritis to keep moving but that’s not always an option when you’re in pain.  So, if you or someone you knows suffers from arthritis, take The Arthritis Foundation’s recommendation to hot tub and do easy exercises like these as a great way to overcome pain and keep moving.

9. For hot tub shoppers, our post on hot tub warranties from September 5th sparked a lot of interest.  Published on September 5th just before the fair, a time when many are considering a hot tub purchase, this post “Buying a Hot tub? Get the Facts on Hot Tub Warranties” gave shoppers valuable information with which to make a better purchase.

10. Hot tub shoppers are desperate for good information on how to buy a hot tub.  Our post on August 30th “Buying a Hot Tub? Don’t Get Soaked. 7 Tips to Help You Buy the Right One the First time!” struck a nerve.  In the  Seattle area, 55% of  buyers at our Olympic Hot Tub stores have never owned a hot tub before. This post gave the right tips to avoid getting soaked.  Our entire category on Hot Tub Bliss “Hot Tub Buying Tips” is the go-to place for anyone in the shopping mode who does want to get it right the first time.

That’s the line-up. Water care, health, safety and buying tips were the big concerns of our readers in 2011.  How about you? Did you have another post that was more important to you than any in the 2011 top 10?  Tell us about it in the comments section. We’d love to hear your favorite.

Olympic Hot Tub Wins “Top Dealer” Award from FreeFlow Spas

We were surprised to receive a big red plaque announcing that we had won a “Top Dealer” award from FreeFlow Spas a few weeks ago.  Surprised and grateful.

A big thanks to FreeFlow for giving us this award and a big thank you to our entire staff, especially Exelane, Rick and Robert in the Lacey Olympic Hot Tub store for selling the most FreeFlow Spas this past year.

FreeFlow Spas are known as Plug ‘n’ Play spas because they plug into a 110v outlet with no modification of the wiring. (Perfect for military bases). They’re energy efficient, affordable, durable and great value for the the budget conscious hot tub shopper.

Greg May of Gig Harbor, Washington wrote to me about his FreeFlow Spa and included this photo. What a view! His story is well worth reading if you’re hot tub shopping. Greg is both quality and value conscious and wanted the best for his money. He got it.

We receive many fan letters from customers who love their FreeFlow spas and the service they received in the Lacey Store. like this one from Susan Alden of  Lacey.

“Hi Alice,

I just wanted to say we appreciated the excellent service at Olympic Hot Tub.  The purchasing process as well as the set up were a breeze!  Most of all, we are LOVING our new tub-a FreeFlow Tristar in Granite.  It runs great and is the perfect size for us.  It has been a life-saver in adjusting to the cold here since we recently moved to Washington from Hawai’i.

Mahalo & Aloha,  Susan Alden”

Olympic Hot Tub & Sauna Blog “Hot Tub Bliss” Celebrates 3rd Anniversary

As Hot Tub Bliss celebrated it’s 3rd Anniversary last month, I see 490 posts in the 36 months since July 2008. That’s an accomplishment I never dreamt would happen when I started writing. But the writing as well as researching topics for the blog has turned into a real passion.

Nancy Juetten, my friend & mentor, encouraged me for almost 6 months before I agreed. Her friendly persistence finally wore me down. One day I just started with the idea of the hot tub “epiphany”.  I hoped that readers would go from “Ahh”-the sound one makes when sinking into the hot swirling waters to “AHAH!”-the sound that escapes when a new idea strikes. I’m all about inspiration! I wanted my blog to be an exploration of the hot tub lifestyle as well as a revelation of all of the many health benefits.

So why am I happy that Nancy cajoled me into blogging?

  1. Blog posts are the repository of everything I know about hot tubbing! After 34 years in the hot tub business, I’ve found that I have more expertise on the product, it’s benefits and lifestyle than just about anyone. I have no lack of material and the blog is a perfect platform for writing down what I know.
  2. Blog posts are training tools. When we hire new sales staff, we point them to the blog: “Here’s just about every thing you need to know about hot tubbing.”  The best new sales people really “get” that it’s an important tool which they can learn from and share with customers.
  3. Blog posts have helped me learn more! Searching the Internet on various blog topics and listening to customers’ questions & concerns, I’ve learned a lot. I’ve found new ways to approach topics and found that I might not have the definitive last word.  If there’s a better way to do something, I’m on it!
  4. Blog posts have connected me with hot tub owners all over the country. I’ve received questions from hot tub owners or prospective owners asking my advice on “all things hot tub and sauna”. The back and forth exchange has been invaluable for hearing what’s on people’s minds and lead to new blog posts. One email from a man in New Hampshire about traumatic brain injury led to a whole series on the benefits of hot tubbing for TBI with data from the most respected researcher in the field.
  5. Blog posts are a quick way to update and transmit information. Because blog posts are short and I post three times a week, I can publish new information, health studies, product updates quickly.

Am I a blogging expert? No, I’m still learning every day. But, the fact that I’m not an expert on blogging doesn’t mean I can’t share what I know and inspire others. I’ve found blogging fun, energizing and useful for building our business and a creative outlet I never knew I needed!

Hope you’ve enjoyed Hot Tub Bliss blog. Have any questions about hot tubs or saunas you’d like answered? Ideas for post topics always appreciated.  Send your questions in via the comment box. And, thanks to every one of my readers and all of your who have posted comments on articles.

Jimmy Morrow Celebrates 10 Years at Olympic Hot Tub

Congratulations to Jimmy Morrow who is celebrating 10 years at Olympic Hot Tub this month. He started as a sales associate in the Everett store and now is king of  Olympic’s on-line store and does all of the product ordering from spas to water care products to covers in our Tukwila Service Center. He’s the attention to detail guy who can pull a wealth of information out of his vast storehouse of product knowledge in the blink of an eye. It’s almost impossible to stump Jimmy on any product detail. No, it IS impossible.

He maintains a great relationship with all of our many vendors. Here’s what Briana Cox, Inside Sales Rep with Leisure Concepts has to say about Jimmy:

“In a nutshell, Jimmy is one unique and genuine person. He is outrageously funny and can make me laugh on those tough or frustrating days. He’s great to work with on a professional level always! And, he makes my job so much easier. Did I mention he’s funny, too? I still remember how my sides ached from the stories he told…anyway, congratulations to Jimmy on 10 years!!”

Two of his biggest fans are at Sunstar Spa covers:

“It has been a pleasure working with Jimmy for the last 6 years. He always knows how to brighten my day!”  Donna Sylvia, Senior Customer Service Rep, Sunstar Spa Covers

“One of the highlights of the annual trade show is the opportunity to meet with Jimmy.  He has always been very knowledgeable about our industry and continues to be a wonderful person to work with.” Sue Sousa, VP Sales, Sunstar Spa Covers

It’s not only our vendors who love Jimmy. Olympic Hot Tub customers rave about his prompt follow through and fast shipping of their orders.

Java Jack posted this review on Google: “I ordered supplies for our hot tub from Olympic recently. The e-store site is very user friendly, and our shipment arrived quickly. I was very pleased with the customer service we received from Olympic and plan to be a repeat customer.”

Another customer, John, said: “I own a Hot Spring Spa from Olympic Hot Tub. Their service is terrific. I needed new filters and some other supplies and used their eStore. They packed it up and shipped it out right away. Free shipping with minimum purchase saved me time and gas. They also provided personal feedback by e-mail on my order status, which was great.”

Jimmy doesn’t just work at Olympic…he uses our products daily in his own home. He owns both a hot tub (a Hot Spot Spa) and a B-200 infrared sauna from Finnleo. The wellness that our products provide is a top priority for him.

Need supplies or a new cover? Call Jimmy at the Service Center 206 431-2876. He’ll always make your day with his cheerful voice and helpful spirit.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Jimmy for 10 great years at Olympic Hot Tub. We all appreciate how much he contributes to our success and makes every day fun! He doesn’t look a day older than when he started, either. :-)

The Day We Met and Decided to Start a Hot Tub Company

I met my future husband, Blair Osborn, on June 2nd, 1975 at 2′o clock in the afternoon at a meeting of the World Future Society in Washington, DC. One of the guest speakers, Hazel Henderson, looked at me, looked at him, and after introducing us said, “You two talk. I have to go off and be on TV. Tah Tah!”

We walked and talked until midnight, when we realized that we were tired of our respective bureaucracies, wanted to do something together, and probably would never be apart. That was the beginning of our 36-year partnership.

My future husband, Blair, was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington. I worked for the U.S. Department of Labor doing job training for the disadvantaged.  I had a $60 million dollar budget and 88,000 people on the payroll. In the spirit of the 70′s we decided to answer the question:  “Can men & women work together?” by starting a business. So out of a desire to escape the bureaucracy and a half-baked idea that being in business couldn’t be hard, we began. I said, “Let’s start a business, how hard can that be?”

“How hard could it be?” Hard. Our start up capital was $30K, my entire pension cash out, plus credit cards. Later the sale of a house netted another $50K. My father was appalled and my friends thought I was crazy giving up a high level government job with excellent benefits.

Olympic Hot Tub Company was founded as a retail wood hot tub business. Why hot tubs you’re thinking?? They seemed to be the “coming thing”. The entry cost was low because the “industry” was so new. We were the first- the Seattle Times credits Olympic with introducing hot tubbing to Seattle. Plus I loved soaking in a hot tub and thought everyone should have one.

Business was very slow at the start. The biggest obstacle? Nobody knew what they were! Customers would stop in and ask: “What’s that big cedar barrel in the window?

My own banker asked if I liked beans. “Why?” I asked. “You’ll be eating a lot of them with this business,” she replied. I had to sell my wonderful collection of Oriental rugs and Victorian antiques just to keep afloat.

You’ve guessed by now that today is the 36th Anniversary of the day I met Blair, my partner in life and in Olympic Hot Tub Company. Through ups and downs we’ve stayed together and built a business we love with employees who are fantastic at what they do and are extremely loyal.

We have almost 18,000 Hot Spring customers in Puget Sound with over 100,000 seats in our hot tubs!  That’s more seats than Qwest Field!! And, we’re fortunate to have a referral rate of 45%-that is happy customers refer their friends to us.  For a business that started asking the question: “Can men and women work together?” we answer “YES!” and are very, very grateful for our success. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has helped us on our journey-our employees, vendors and, of course, our customers.

And, we’re still gung ho about it because not everyone has a hot tub…yet. We’re dedicated to making it easy to take it easy.

What’s HOT for In-Home Relaxation? Salt Water Hot Tubs and Saunas!

What’s HOT for in-home relaxation in 2011? It’s all about making relaxation as easy as possible. It’s about easy water care for hot tubs. It’s about having a sauna at home for all of the great health benefits.

Come see us at this weekend’s Bellevue Home & Lifestyles Show. We’re showcasing the hottest products for your home to make relaxation easier and easier.

We’re featuring the Hot Spring Spa Vanguard and the Hot Spring Spa Jetsetter-our two best selling models in our booth.
The Hot Spring Vanguard -our favorite big tub-which is a roomy, luxurious space for 4-6 with a multitude of jets.

The The Hot Spring Jetsetter is the perfect spa for 2 and its small footprint makes it ideal for small yards and town homes.

The biggest news: our water care options which are exclusive to Olympic! All of our spas come with SilkBalance for water care. It’s being adopted by savvy hot tub owners everywhere because it gives you soft, smooth skin, no odors or smells AND there’s no testing or mixing. You only need to add SilkBalance and a small amount of sanitizer and that’s it. Water looks better, smells better and feels better! Clean, clear water without all of the old hot tub hassles.

An option on all Hot Spring Spas and Limelight Hot Tubs is the NEW ACE Saltwater Sanitizing system which gives you salt water bathing at home! No chlorine needed and you’ll have soft, smooth skin. For virtually hands-free water care, it’s the ACE salt water system!

And, what’s the hottest thing in home improvement? Finnleo Saunas! The Finnleo saunas we’re bringing are the, PS-44 and a B-200.

The Passport PS-44 is a wonderful traditional steam sauna that simply plugs in! The B-200 is one of most popular models of infrared saunas. With a footprint of only 16 square feet it seats 1-2 comfortably.

Here are a couple of reasons that saunas are growing in popularity: sauna use has been shown to reduce colds and flu symptoms as well as be beneficial for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.

Any blog post that mentions  SEX is sure to get attention. Take a look at this blog post about why people are being advised to install an infrared sauna in their master bedrooms. Better than Viagra say infrared sauna owners!!

So come see us this weekend at the Bellevue Home & Lifestyles Show.
