Many people think taking a traditional steam sauna is masochism pure and simple no benign about it.

But here’s another way to look at taking a traditional sauna that’s super hot. Psychologist Paul Rozin has argued that people get a kick from “benign masochism”—that is, controlled exposure to low-level discomfort (think spicy chili peppers and saunas). Maybe we love the endorphin rush. Or just the delightful contrast when we ultimately escape from the pain. Regardless, it pays to pamper yourself occasionally with a bit—but just a bit—of suffering.

So an endorphin rush as well as the relief when it’s over are two ways to make a sauna feel good for those of you who are skeptical.

Here’s the best reason to take a hot sauna:

Many researchers believe that small doses of “stressors” such as poisons, radiation and heat can actually be good for you — so good that they can even reverse the aging process. This counter-intuitive effect, called “hormesis,” was once considered flaky, but in recent years, it has been shown to extend longevity in yeast, fruit flies, protozoans, worms and rodents.

If the findings extend to people (and studies are being done on this), it could stretch the average healthy human lifespan to 90, says biologist Joan Smith-Sonneborn of the University of Wyoming, Laramie.

How so? Stressors seem to kick-start natural repair mechanisms, including heat-shock proteins and DNA-repair enzymes, to fix the damage they have caused. If this damage is not too severe, the repair systems may overcompensate, building up enough oomph to repair unrelated damage as well. And if you accept the idea that damage equals aging, this is nothing less than rejuvenation.

The big unanswered question is at what dose does an otherwise-harmful agent become beneficial? Clearly, too much radiation or poison or heat are bad for you. However, many medical professionals believe that there may be a safe way to trick your body’s repair mechanisms into overdrive and that’s with a sauna’s heat. Look at the Finns-arguably some of the healthiest people on the planet. There are more saunas than cars in Finland and they get used daily.

So give a sauna a try for better health. Just don’t overdo it and remember we’re not doctors. Check with your own doctor if you have concerns. This is a blog post about healthy ideas! What are your thoughts on the “benign masochism” of a traditional steam sauna?

The Good sweat starts with a Finnleo Sauna from Olympic Hot Tub Company

Did you know that installing a sauna in a bathroom is the hottest thing in home remodeling projects? In this episode called “Au Naturale”, the homeowner and I Hate My Bath producers chose a Finnleo Infrared Sauna (a B200) for the flexibility and the diminutive size that was just right for this project The producers were impressed by Finnleo’s reputation as the largest sauna company in the world and the clean design of their infrared saunas.

The homeowners wanted to get rid of their old 60′s era Pink Bath and transform it into a beautiful modern bathroom complete with custom shower, custom vanity and a 2-person Finnleo infrared sauna. On the show, host Jim Devlin shows how painless it can be to put in a sauna in your own home. The recent surge in awareness of the health benefits of saunas played a part in producers selecting a sauna for the episode.

The homeowners chose a cedar sauna to go with the Asian feel and darker woods and stone used throughout the new bath design.

Look out big pharma. Surprise! Surprise! Doing some simple exercises at home or seeing a chiropractor is more effective than pain killers in getting rid of a painful crick in the neck says a new federally funded study as reported in the New York Times. In a nutshell, the new research, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, found that chiropractic care or simple exercises done at home were better at reducing pain than taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen or narcotics.

Are you one of the millions of Americans with chronic neck pain? Neck pain affects at least three quarters of Americans at some point in their lives (!), and many take over-the-counter medications, visit doctors or chiropractors in search of relief. If you’re a sedentary office worker who’s parked in front of a computer screen all day it’s likely you’ve had this particular type of neck pain.

In a study run by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota, participants were divided into three groups. The study was designed to answer the question: would spinal manipulation be more effective than home exercise or medication at relieving neck pain after 12 weeks of treatment?

One group was assigned to visit a chiropractor for roughly 20-minute sessions for the length of the study, making an average of 15 visits.

A second group was assigned to take common pain relievers like acetaminophen and — in some cases, at the discretion of a doctor — stronger drugs like narcotics and muscle relaxants.

The third group met twice with physical therapists who gave them instructions on simple, gentle exercises for the neck that they could do at home. They were encouraged to do 5 to 10 repetitions of each exercise up to eight times a day. (See the demo at www.annals.org).

One very beneficial exercise was dubbed “the chicken”. Stick your neck out like a chicken walking and pull it back slowly. You have to see it to appreciate it! It works according to the study. What better place to do the chicken than your hot tub?!?

After 12 weeks, the people in the non-medication groups did significantly better than those taking the drugs. Over 50% of those who met with chiropractors and 48 percent who did the exercises reported at least a 75% reduction in pain. But only 33% of the people in the medication group reported a reduction in pain.

A year later, 53% of the subjects who had received spinal manipulation still reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, with similar results from the exercise group. But only 38% of the medication group reported less pain.

“It was a “big surprise” to see that the home exercises were about as effective as the chiropractic sessions, “ said said Dr. Gert Bronfort, an author of the study and research professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minnesota. “We hadn’t expected that they would be that close,” he said. “But I guess that’s good news for patients.”

In addition to their limited pain relief, the medications had at least one other downside: people kept taking them. “The people in the medication group kept on using a higher amount of medication more frequently throughout the follow-up period, up to a year later,” Dr. Bronfort said. “If you’re taking medication over a long time, then we’re running into more systemic side effects like gastrointestinal problems.”

He also expressed concern that those on medications were not as empowered or active in their own care as those in the other groups. “We think it’s important that patients are enabled to deal with as much control over their own condition as possible,” he said. “This study shows that they can play a large role in their own care.”

So empower yourself. Learn the exercises and do them at home in your Hot Spring Spa. The hot water will relax your muscles and increase circulation to the sore area. It’s free, it’s easy and so much better for you than drugs. And, that’s a fact.

Why just February 9th? Why not read every day in the hot tub?

If you’re like me, you’ve dropped many a good book in the water. Here’s the scoop on hot tub reading to make it easy to relax, read and keep your book dry while you soak:

1. WRAP YOUR KINDLE IN A PLASTIC BAG. For those of you who are afraid of dropping it in the water or getting it wet (a real concern), a zip lock plastic bag will keep your Kindle dry. It may be a little hard to read through the plastic. Good thing you can adjust the type size!

2. GET A WATERPROOF KINDLE COVER. Here’s an easy and inexpensive solution: get a waterproof Kindle cover so that you can make better use of your time in the hot tub and enjoy the time more besides!

Some covers protect your eReader from moisture and splashing (not waterproof) and some claim to protect your device from complete submersion. Take your pick.

3. DO THE OVER THE SIDE TWIST. You can put your book or newspaper on the deck surrounding the hot tub and twist around to read it. Not too much fun and uncomfortable for a long read.

4. GET WATERPROOF BOOKS. In August 2004, Charles Melcher patented the Durabook, a process for making waterproof books. His company, Melcher Media, published “Poolside” ($14), an immersible collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway, Joyce Carol Oates, John Cheever and others. Durabooks makes some great waterproof books some featuring short stories by noted authors as well as some spicier tales.

The best one? “The Beach Book” with stories set on beaches. This book is like a mini-vacation.

5. Grab an AQUA Reader.Trying to read in the hot tub is challenging. Your book usually gets wet. Your arms get tired holding it aloft.

Print junkies rejoice! The Aquareader offers a stable, buoyant place for books, magazines, and reports. There’s even a built-in cup holder. Reading material stays dry and secure while you stay warm and comfortable on cold fall nights sitting upright or lounging with shoulders at or below water level.

You may never leave the tub! Warn your significant other that you may develop prune-toes. Aquareader- a must have from Olympic Hot Tub Company.

This Valentine’s Day think bubbles not baubles. It’s not the expense, it’s the thought that counts. Make this a memorable Valentine’s Day. You don’t need reservations at a crowded restaurant. You need a few preparations for a cozy evening at home. Just add water – to your Hot Spring Spa. Use your imagination. Or take some advice:

♥ Leave an invitation to the warm, wet rendezvous somewhere she’ll find it.

♥ Scrub the tub, light some candles, adjust the temperature, put some mood music on your iPod’s for the floating portable speaker, add some Spazzaz aromatherapy scents, splash in the moonlight under the stars, turn on the tub lights – maybe in a new color.

♥ Put some chilled San Pellegrino sparkling water or hot chocolate within reach, maybe some chocolate-covered strawberries or some Emily’s chocolate covered fortune cookies.

♥ Learn some Hand Reflexology techniques for a touching surprise in the tub.

♥ Try turning the jets off for a romantic sound of silence. after you’ve had a jet massage.

♥ Leave a bottle of wine, maybe Italian bubbly Proseco, on ice for an after-soak toast with some Fran’s Dark Chocolate Truffles – better than an energy-sapping heavy meal, even better than oysters.

Don’t have a hot tub? Then it’s time to get one. Have a hot tub? Give her some new towels or fluffy terrycloth robes, with a new Spazazz or Magma Onsen Beppu scent for the warm aroma of romance.

Oh, and ladies – here’s your gift to him for this special moment:

♥ Don’t feel like you have to talk about your relationship.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Olympic!

A mere pause from thinking! said Lord Byron.

If your senses left you yesterday and you did over-imbibe, read on for seven tips that will make you feel better faster.

The term hangover was originally a 19th century expression describing unfinished business—something left over from a meeting—or “survival.” In 1904, the meaning “morning after-effect of drinking too much” first surfaced and has been used ever since as a catchall to describe that awful feeling.

The most commonly reported features of a hangover include headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, lethargy, and thirst typically after the intoxicating effects of the alcohol you consumed the night before wear off. Add dysphoria- an unpleasant or uncomfortable mood, such as sadness, anxiety, irritability or restlessness. Let’s call it the opposite of euphoria. You feel rotten.

It’s the American way to “do” something when we feel bad. No waiting for a temporary hangover to work itself out. In this case, you can act now to feel better.

The body rids itself of alcohol and its toxic byproducts in four ways, breathing, via the liver or kidneys and from sweating. Exercise speeds breathing, increases sweat and moves alcohol-laden blood through the liver and kidneys to be processed more quickly.

You probably don’t feel like going to the gym this morning (if you do, good for you!), but jumping in your Hot Spring Spa will do almost as much for you. The heat increases your circulation which will speed blood more quickly through the liver and kidneys. Did you know that immediately after a person is immersed, water begins to exert pressure on the body? Cardiac volume increases by nearly one-third when you’re immersed to the neck.

Here’s what to do to feel better now:

1. Rehydrate. Drink a glass of Gatorade or any sports drink that replaces electrolytes before getting in the hot tub. One reason you feel so bad now is because you’re dehydrated. Coffee is dehydrating and while you think that it is just what you need, it is not a helpful for a hangover.

2. Resist the temptation to take aspirin which is a blood thinner, just like alcohol and can intensify its effects! The side effects of aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen can be magnified when alcohol is in your system, so it is best (even though it may be the first thing you reach for) to avoid them to kill the hangover pain. See Tip 5 below for the best way to get rid of a hangover headache.

3. Get in the hot tub at between 102-104 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

4. Do deep breathing exercises in the tub.

5. For headache relief that’s simple and natural, try pinching your hand between your thumb and forefinger while in the hot tub. That part of the hand is a nerve junction and an acupressure point which is supposed to release tension in the head neck. The advice is to pinch quite hard for thirty seconds every five minutes until the headache subsides.

6. Take a cold shower after your hot tub soak which will really get your circulation moving and your heart rate up.

7. Drink water or Gatorade after you soak. More of the right kind of fluids (and “hair of the dog” is NOT the right kind of fluid) will flush the alcohol from your system and revive you.

Happy Day after the Super Bowl. Save these tips for next year. If you have any other sure-cure hangover remedies, please share in the comment box. And, hope you feel better soon.

Submerging yourself in the heated water, surrounded by the massaging jets and your best pals is a great way to watch the Super Bowl if you don’t over do it!

Your Hot Spring Spa will give you the perfect seat to watch the action and guarantee everyone a great time if you follow these tips:

1. CHECK YOUR HOT TUB SUPPLIES NOW! There’s nothing worse than going for a dip, opening the lid and finding skanky water and realizing you’re out of supplies to clear it up. Missing shock, SilkBalance or chlorine? Get to an Olympic Hot Tub store today or tomorrow and re-stock. With company coming for the Super Bowl, you’ll want your hot tub clean and ready to go. Stock up NOW knowing you’ll have enough to have clean, clear water in your hot tub for the big game. Better to be stocked up than scrambling.

2. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HOT TUB DURING THE GAME. Keep the water chemistry in balance and sanitizer levels up. You want your friends to come back, don’t you? An unbalanced, unsanitized hot tub can lead to real problems for all hot tubbbers. A temperature of 102 is a good starting place for most people. Make sure that you and your guests get out before you get over-heated!

3. CLEAN YOUR FILTERS BEFORE THE PARTY. Use our SeaKlear Spa Filter Cleaner Spray a liquid product that greatly improves filter life and efficiency. It is specially made to cleanse body oil & lotions from spa cartridge filters. Used regularly it will extend filter life and assures proper filtration. If they’re over 2-3 years old, you’re in need of new ones. Stop by an Olympic Hot Tub store for new filters or filter cleaner for you Hot Spring Spa today or tomorrow.

4. MAINTAIN THE WATER LEVEL. Water does evaporate more rapidly off the hot tub surface during cold, dry weather. Make sure that the water is above the skimmer line so you’ll have continued filtration and operational jets. With more soakers, that water level will go down fast.

5. DRINKS. Save the alcohol for after soaking. I know that sounds so boring! My advice? Have a selection of bottled waters, juices and sodas on hand to keep soakers hydrated while soaking. Alcohol? Alcohol is a depressant while hot water is a stimulant. As you sit in hot water your metabolism is reved up faster than normal. Alcohol’s effects are felt much more quickly in a hot tub. Drink alcohol and a major hangover is a sure thing the next day. Save wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks for after soaking. You don’t want your guests to regret the day they accepted your invitation.

6. PARTY FOOD. KEEP IT ON THE LIGHT SIDE. Stick to finger food that can be eaten in or out of the tub. What works best for hot tub parties? Easy to eat items like veggies & dip, fresh fruit on skewers, chicken or shrimp kabobs, egg rolls, fresh rolls, spring rolls. Avoid chips-potato, corn, extra crunchy whatever- in the tub. If spilled, all chips make a party ending, gummy mess!

7. EXTRA TOWELS-A MUST. You can never have enough towels! Guests may get in and out of the tub multiple times, leading to damp towels that stop doing their job. Keep lots of clean, fresh towels on hand and stay on top of putting wet towels in the washer & dryer. Your guests will love you for it and so will your upholstered lawn furniture, carpets & floors.

8. ADD MUSIC & ACCESSORIES! Make your hot tub area festive. With the right hot tub accessories, you can make your Super Bowl hot tub experience super enjoyable. Why not add a new step, safety rail, or a towel rack? There are a variety of hot tub accessories that you can add to your hot tub to make it convenient, stylish and more enjoyable. Check out our other party tips here. Call the Olympic Hot Tub store nearest you for ideas. Check out our estore for the latest hot tub accessories.

9. HAVE FUN . If you, the host, aren’t having a good time, your guests won’t either. Sit back, relax and have a ball at your own Super Bowl Hot Tub Party. You can never foresee all of the problems that can and do arise, so just go with the flow. Your guests will appreciate your attitude to the day and have fun themselves.

1. HOT TUB SOAKING AIDS HEART HEALTH from January 2011. Startling news for most readers: Cardiac volume increases by nearly one-third with immersion to the neck.” Simply put, this means your heart gets a cardiovascular workout just from sitting in a hot tub; this does not occur being sedentary when dry.

2. HOT TUBS ARE SAFE FOR PEOPLE WITH TREATED HYPERTENSION. This is the good news from this medical study from January 2010.

3. HOT TUB SOAKING LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE from November 2008. Blood warmed in the vessels at your skin’s surface is pumped from there back into your body where it begins to heat your organs and deep muscle tissue where the same healthy vessel dilation occurs leaving the muscles more relaxed. The longer your spend immersed in hot water, the more times the warm, healing blood can cycle through your body. Studies have shown that in a hot tub maintained at 104 degrees the core body temperature can rise to 102 degrees Fahrenheit in less than 20 minutes.

This means a healthy increase in heart rate with a decrease in blood pressure as the body cools that reduces strain on other vital organs. It’s no wonder that at the reputable Mayo Clinic, hot water hydrotherapy is used to improve cardio-health.

4. HOT TUB FOR STRESS RELIEF! NEWS UPDATE ON A SCIENTIFIC STUDY CONDUCTED AT WSU from May 2010.

The sympathetic nervous system (which escalates under stress) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which promotes calm) — fall into balance when the body is immersed in warm water, according to the study conducted by Dr. Bruce Becker at Washington State University, Pullman.

That balanced state has been associated with a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, improved memory, enhanced cognitive processes and increased concentration. “The autonomic nervous system responds to warm water immersion the same way it responds to meditation or a number of other relaxed states,” Becker says. Stress reduction is a must for a healthy heart.

5. SOAK IN YOUR BACKYARD HOT TUB FOR BETTER HEALTH- EXPOSURE TO NATURE BOOSTS IMMUNITY from October 2010.
Scientists found that being among plants outdoors produced “lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, and lower blood pressure,” among other benefits.

Heart health is vital to your overall health. Keep your heart healthy by watching your diet, not smoking, doing cardiovascular workouts and, of course, hot tubbing. Do see your doctor, first, if you have any concerns about using the hot tub and your health.

Physiologically, the migraine headache is a neurological condition more common to women than to men. The word migraine was based on the Greek word hemikrania, from the Greek roots for “half” and “skull” or figuratively meaning hitting one’s head with a pick axe!

The typical migraine headache is on both sides of the brain with pulsating pain, lasting from 4 to 72 hours. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, photophobia (increased sensitivity to light), and phonophobia (increased sensitivity to sound).

Approximately one-third of people who suffer migraine headache perceive an aura-unusual visual, olfactory, or other sensory experience that are a sign that a migraine will soon strike.

Initial treatment is with analgesics (from aspirin to Percocet) for the headache, an anti-emetic for the nausea, and the avoidance of triggering conditions. Although the cause of migraine headache is unknown, the most common theory is a disorder of the serotonergic control system, i.e. the part of the brain that secretes serotonin-a chemical in the brain related to depression.

Migraines are debilitating, can wreck havoc on plans and prevent many from living a productive, happy life. Try a natural approach when a migriane strikes. You might be surprised at how effective it is.

Head to your Hot Spring Spa when a migraine hits. By immersing yourself in hot water with a steady temperature (between 102-104 degrees), you can release stress and tension that may be triggering the onset of a migraine. Close your eyes and try to let your mind clear. This is the first step towards migraine relief.

Make sure to keep your fluid intake up which helps combat migraines for many people. Most people that have migraines tend to avoid eating or drinking when they have a flare up. Experts say that keeping the amount of water that in your system at a steady level is essential to avoiding migraines. So, drink water at a steady pace throughout the day.

Try a massage therapist, too. It is very common for stress to be the trigger of the headache that a person has, and when this happens the muscles in the body tense up. Having a massage can help eliminate the tense muscles thus providing the relief from the migraine that you want.

So, take a hot tub, drink plenty of water and visit your favorite masseuse before reaching for heavy pain killers and resigning. If you can’t make a trip to a masseuse, check out the book “Self-Massage for Athletes” by Rich Poley.

Next time a migraine strikes, you may find quicker, more long lasting relief-the natural way in your Hot Spring Spa. Let us know how this works for you in the comment box below!
