You guessed it! It’s hot tub noise. A noisy hot tub can ruin your sanity.

Quiet Hot Tubs Make Good Neighbors

Did you know that one of the biggest summertime complaints to city officials is hot tub noise? That’s right. Noise from a neighbor’s hot tub. If it’s annoying to neighbors, think how bad it is for the owners.

Why do people get rid of a perfectly good dishwasher and buy a noise free Bosch? You got it, it’s the appeal of not having to hear that incessant noise.

Peace starts at home with a noise-free Hot Spring Spa

Now you’ll understand why Olympic sells new Hot Spring spas to customers who bought brand X the first time around. It’s the noise that’s hard to take.

Your hot tub should promote peace for you and your neighbors.

Nobody wants to live next door to a car with a grinding motor in the middle of the night, which is how most hot tub pumps sound when the timer switches on to filter and heat. That can induce more stress than even a hot tub can heal.

Hot Spring Spa is the only hot tub engineered for no noise from heating and filtering. Hot Spring Spas filter all of the water 24/7 with a no-noise circulation pump that uses less energy than a 40-watt light bulb.

Noise hurts. It’s not just annoying – Noise Free America reports that long-term exposure to 65 decibels or more, and short-term exposure to 80 decibels or more, can have serious physical and mental effects.

Noise triggers the stressful “fight or flight” reaction, releasing cortisol and other harmful chemicals into the bloodstream that can build up and lead to cardiovascular disease, aggression, chronic fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, mental illness, and anxiety. Noise also affects the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems. It can exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety, stress, emotional instability, sexual impotence, mood swings and social conflicts. Noise really makes you tired – it’s a major cause of chronic fatigue syndrome – and it can contribute to high blood pressure and ulcers.

So when you go shopping for a hot tub, use your ears.

That rules out buying online, where you’re pretty much guaranteed to get a cheap noisy model no matter what you pay.

When you visit a showroom, ask to hear what the full tub sounds like when the heating and filtering mode is on. If the model is dry, that’s a sign the sound wouldn’t be pretty. And if you plan to put your tub on a deck or balcony, remember that a noisy pump is going to sound even worse on the vibrating floor.

Don’t trust your ears? Add the Decibel Meter Pro app to your smart phone and use it when you shop.

With Hot Spring Spa’s no-noise filtration system, you can put your tub on a deck or next to a window. It’s stress-free peace, and peace of mind, so you can relax. So can your neighbor.

Hot tub shopping? Put a Hot Spring at Olympic Hot Tub Company at the top of your list. Come try one and hear the quiet for yourself.

It’s easy to put your hot tub in top condition…thanks to these tips from Reg Akright, Head Service Technician, who’s celebrating 23 years at Olympic Hot Tub. That’s Reg at left with a service award he won.

♥ BEFORE YOU DRAIN & CLEAN THE SHELL

If you haven’t used your hot tub in awhile, but the water’s been sitting in it, use System Flush to clean out any mold, organic matter or bio-film from the plumbing lines. Let sit overnight and then drain. Spring Special Regularly $19.95 Now only $16.95.

Now’s a perfect time to try SilkBalance! It’s all-natural & gives you soft smooth skin after every soak. No testing or mixing or adding anything but SilkBalance and shock. Before you do, add CleanStart to your tub and let sit overnight. Most “icky stuff” hides where you can’t see it. Use to “detoxify” and remove build up from normal use.

Restores hot tub plumbing and jets to like-new condition.

♥ DRAIN THE SPA AND CLEAN THE SHELL

Unplug 110V spas; turn all breakers off on 220V spas.

Use only shell cleaning agents approved by the manufacturer: WindexÔ, SoftScrubÔ,

Alkalinity Increaser (baking soda).

For best results, use GelGloss Cleaner®. Thick and effective for removing oils, dirt, and scum from all spa surfaces, won’t scratch. Protects spa surface, repels dirt. GelGloss SPRING SPECIAL Save $1.00…Only $9.95

♥ CHECK EQUIPMENT BAY FOR CRITTERS.

Do you see mounds of fine, yellowish powder inside the equipment bay or near the spa, and reddish brown ants about ½” long? If you answered, yes, take action immediately. Call an exterminator to rid your spa of carpenter ants. Other critters might have nested over the winter. If you see signs of them, call our Service Center 206-431-2876 for the rodent ridding fact sheet before acting!

♥ CHECK YOUR FILTERS.

Clean filters per the directions in your Hot Spring Owners’ Manual using SeaKlear Spray Filter Cleanerä. Spray spa filter, let soak and rinse off. Removes grease, oils and debris that collect on spa filters. Rejuvenates them to top filtering power. SeaKlear Filter Cleaner Save $3.00. Spring Special now only $10.95. The WaterWandÔ hand held filter cartridge cleaner is a big help when cleaning. Attach to hose; flick the switch. Saves water use by 50%. SPRING SPECIAL $21.21

Change filters every two-three years for superior water quality and lower chemical use. If filters are clogged, dirty, cracked or pulled away from the base or darker than a manila folder, replace immediately.

If your spa is over 3 years old and you’ve never had new filters, order some today.

SPRING CLEANING SPECIAL: Save $5.00 on all Filters

♥ADD FRESH WATER. REFILLING TIPS:

When refilling, allow hose to run a few minutes (low pressure is fine), onto lawn or flowerbeds, before putting it into your spa. ·Always feed hose into your filter compartment when filling. This help prevents air locks that stop your tub from heating!

EverFresh® Water Care System Owners: Change your Silver Ion Cartridge every four months. NOW you’ll receive a new cartridge once a quarter when you sign up for automatic shipment, and save $2.00 on each cartridge! FREE SHIPPING anywhere in the continental U.S. You’ll always have clean water! Call Olympic Hot Tub’s Service Center today to get started with Silver Ion Home Delivery 206-431-2876 or Home Delivery from our estore.

♥ ADD START-UP WATER CARE PRODUCTS. Balance the water. Restart.

Note: Use only sanitizers approved by Watkins Manufacturing (makers of all brands we sell): Sodium Dichloride, granular bromine or our proprietary system: EverFresh®. Do not use tri-chlor (which is for swimming pools), any type of compressed bromine or chlorine, acid or any other than those recommended. Use of anything other than those recommended may void your spa warranty.

♥ NEED HELP OR A REFRESHER ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SPA? Stop into any of our stores for a quick refresher on “how to” OR hire Olympic Hot Tub’s Valet Service for a one time drain, clean and water care lesson.
Hot tub play can be therapeutic for children, especially for those with conditions that benefit from the water’s warmth, buoyant support and muscle-building resistance. That includes a range of muscular, skeletal and neurological disorders, from autism and asthma to scoliosis and spinal bifida. Many hospitals and therapy centers include hot tub time in their treatments.

Cool down the water to between 90°F and 94°F for aquatic therapy with younger children, maybe 100°F to 102°F for older kids who are going in only waist-deep. This will keep them from getting too tired. They can safely stay in the cooler water 10 minutes for every year of age – 20 minutes for a 2-year-old, 100 minutes for a 10-year-old. This is only a suggestion. Be sure to check with your personal physician before letting your child with one of these conditions soak in the hot tub. Grownups, of course, can tolerate up to 104°F for 15-20 minutes at a time.

Make sure the water is absolutely pristine! If your child is ill, he or she will likely have a compromised immune system. Don’t risk further health issues by having them soak in dirty water. SilkBalance is ideal as a hot tub water treatment because it’s soft on skin, doesn’t irritate eyes and maintains water quality with little effort.

Physical therapist Kristin Cooley of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, which treats about 50 children a month with water therapy, says parents often can help with the therapy at home under a professional’s guidance. Cooley identifies benefits for these conditions:

* Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Hot Tub Therapy.

The water’s buoyancy helps support a broader range of motion for children with joint inflammation and muscle weakness while the water’s resistance helps strengthen muscles. Jet turbulence in the tub can teach better balance, and kids can boost their endurance with aerobic exercises in the water. Take it easy during a flare-up, but otherwise encourage more activity during the session.

* Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma and Hot Tub Therapy.

The pressure of the water on the chests helps strengthen the diaphragm, leading to more lung capacity, breath control, and rib mobility. Because chemicals are evaporating from the water within 18 inches of the surface, children with these problems should spend only about10 minutes with their face that close, and maybe another 10 minutes waist-deep.

* Cerebral Palsy and Hot Tub Therapy. The water’s support helps children stand, walk and keep better balance. The jets and warm water loosen muscles and ease pain.

* Brittle Bones and Hot Tub Therapy. Children whose bones break easily because of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) can exercise more safely in the water. The sessions strengthen their muscles and improve mobility and motor skills.

* Scoliosis and Hot Tub Therapy. Buoyancy and resistance in the water strengthen muscles on the weak side of the curved spine and even help improve the body’s alignment.

* Autism & Sensory Integration Dysfunction and Hot Tub Therapy. The physical sensation of water on the body helps calm children who have autism. The environment magnifies sounds and sights, including echoes and light reflecting off the water, in ways that can benefit the children.

* Spina Bifida and Hot Tub Therapy. Time in the water can help strengthen the upper body of children who suffer from the birth defect that leaves them with improperly formed vertebrae. The condition affects their center of gravity, and the tub sessions can help them learn to orient themselves.

Of course, you don’t have to tell the kids it’s good for them – just let them have fun! It’s just another way your hot tub helps your peace of mind.

Please do check with your personal physician before you let your child suffering from one of these conditions soak in hot water.

Yes, gardeners in the Northwest will have to pick up a hose and actually add water to their gardens.

Here’s a question posted on the Recycle This website that will be of interest to every hot tub owner:

“I want to use the water from my hot tub on the garden. It’s a great waste to just put it down the drain. The water has chlorine in it. Is there any way I can remove the chlorine from it to make it safe to water my garden?”

YES! Read on.

A few years ago when Seattle was in the middle of a drought, the City of Seattle Water Department called me to discuss using hot tub water to irrigate lawns and flowers (although not vegetable gardens). The topic came under the heading of “gray” water- that is, water that has been used once and is no longer pristine.

The City of Seattle is all in favor of using hot tub water to irrigate lawns and flowerbeds provided that gardeners follow our recommended method for draining safely:

CHLORINE

When you’re ready to drain, do not add chlorine for 1-2 days. Chlorine is very hard on plant life. However, it dissipates so quickly from a very hot hot tub (which is why you have to keep adding it!) that in a day or so there is no chlorine present in the tub. Leave the lid open. Check chlorine levels with a test kit to make sure they are at zero. If they’re not, run the jets for 1-2 hours with the lid open and the chlorine will be gone.

pH

Plants in Seattle are accustomed to a slightly acid rain and tap water. If the hot tub water is too alkaline, plant life may suffer. Check to make sure that the hot tub water tests in the 7.2-7.4 range (neutral) before draining. If not, adjust the pH and run the jets to make sure any chemicals you’ve added are thoroughly mixed.

Switch to SilkBalance.

SilkBalance is made of all natural ingredients that do the job of balancing the water. Use of SilkBalance will not harm flowers or lawns and pets can drink it with no ill effects. A hot tub that is treated with SilkBalance can be drained anytime you want to do it. No waiting until harmful chlorine is dissipated.

Follow the steps above to reuse your hot tub water safely for watering your lawn and plants. Wherever you live, make sure it’s legal to use gray water on your garden plants. Check with your local municipality for any rules concerning hot tub draining and use of gray water.

It’s obvious to regular sauna users that it’s a relaxing escape from the stresses of day-to-day life. Infrared sauna enthusiasts report mood elevation as well as stress relief. Researchers asked the question: could sauna use be effective for treating depression? In some cases, the answer was “yes”:

In 2005, a study was published in Psychosomatic Medicine in which a group of 28 mildly depressed patients with appetite loss and subjective symptoms were studied. Twenty-eight mildly depressed inpatients with general fatigue, appetite loss, and somatic and mental complaints were randomly assigned to thermal therapy group (n = 14) or non-thermal therapy group (n = 14). Patients in the thermal therapy group were treated with 60 degrees C far-infrared dry sauna for 15 minutes and were then kept at bed rest with a blanket for 30 minutes once a day, 5 days a week for a total of 20 sessions in 4 weeks.

Patients given sauna treatment showed significant improvement in bodily complaints, as well as hunger and relaxation scores compared with the control group. As well, the ghrelin hormone (that’s an appetite stimulant secreted by your gastrointestinal system) as well as daily caloric intake improved in the sauna group significantly more than in the control group.

These findings suggest that repeated thermal therapy may be useful for mildly depressed patients with appetite loss and subjective complaints.

As with many of the benefits of infrared saunas, science proves what regular users know. Taking a sauna is a mood elevator. Better than pills!

Sauna bathing has profound effects on overall health. Interested in long term health maintenance and taking control of your own health? Sauna enthusiasts consider a sauna as a low-cost, non-drug approach to wellness using the body’s own properties to strengthen health. Adding sauna bathing to your daily routine is a great way to get healthy and stay healthy! Find out more.

Health through Water, or as the Romans said: Sanum per Aqua

The travel season is here. Be prepared before you fly. Try these tips to overcome jet lag before it zaps your energy, gets you down and upsets your whole system.

Most people don’t recognize the role dehydration plays in jet lag. Your internal clock gets out of sync not only because you flew over several time zones of ocean to Asia or Europe but also because you were breathing air drier than a desert for most of that time – sometimes less than 10% humidity. That has a lot to do with why you’re so tired, your body feels so sluggish and your skin is dry and itchy.

Your hot tub can help you re-hydrate and recover fast. I know this is true. Two years ago on a trip to Rome, my husband and I checked into our hotel and then grabbed a cab to the only hammam in Rome-AquaMadre, a wonderful Turkish bath with thermal pools. We soaked for a couple of hours alternating between the hot and cool pools. And, to our surprise had almost no jet lag symptoms the next day. Last year, our plane landed too late for the hammam and we paid the price for not soaking. The jet lag persisted for days. A bathtub did not help us overcome that sluggish, tired feeling nor did it reset our body clocks to Roman time.

1. SOAK TO RE-HYDRATE. Of course you want to drink plenty of water too, but surrounding yourself with soothing water in the hot tub can start the healing, especially for your parched skin. Get in as quick as you can after landing, and relax for at least 20 minutes in the balm of your Hot Spring Spas’ hydro-massage jets.

2. LOCK IN MOISTURE. When you leave the tub, lock in the moisture with a high-quality body lotion all over. Don’t forget your back.

3. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. You can head off some of the problems by drinking bottled water throughout the flight and avoiding drinks such as alcohol and coffee that make the dehydration worse. Keep up the extra water for at least two days after you reach home.

4. EAT LIGHTLY. Avoid salt and fat as much as you can, so eat little airline food and focus on fresh fruit, fruit juice and other high-carb choices.

5. TAKE TWO SOAKS A DAY FOR A WEEK. For fast relief, soak 10-15 minutes every morning and 20-24 minutes every night the week following your trip.

6. TURN YOUR HOT TUB INTO A THERAPY POOL FOR DEEPER RELAXATION. Turn you hot tub into a therapy pool with Spazazz. Colorful and fragrant Spazazz Therapy Crystals are especially helpful for jet lag. set the mood because they relax your state of mind and body. Add a few capsules of Spazazz Crystals to your spa or hot tub before you soak. These fantastic fragrances will enhance your spa experience by transporting you to a deeper relaxation.

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

Here are answers to the five top questions our service center team receives everyday. Olympic Hot Tub’s Service Manager, Dennis Blair-a 15 year hot tub industry veteran, weighs in on the answers:

1. Why isn’t the heat working?

Probably the most common reason you spa might stop heating involves the filters. If they’re clogged, dirty or need replacing, they’ll interfere with the heating system, because every drop of water in your Hot Springs Spa passes through the filters before it returns to the spa. You can confirm that the filters are causing the heat loss by removing them and checking to see if you have heat in an hour. If the filters haven’t been cleaned in a month or more, they need attention – even if they look clean, body oils and other small particles could be clogging them. Hose off the loose debris, spray on SeaKlear filter cleaner, let it work for 10 or 15 minutes, then hose it off. If the filters are more than two years old, replace them. For a complete explanation of the importance of filters in your hot tub, read “Hot Tub Filters Everything You Need to Know”.

If you’re sure the filters are not causing the heat loss, hit the reset button if your tub has one, or turn off the power off for 10 or 15 minutes and see if heat returns when you turn it on. As a last resort, call the service center for help 206 431-2876 and we’ll send a technician if you need one.

2. Should I drain the hot tub if I’m not going to be using it for a while?

Draining the hot tub is not recommended – in the winter you risk freeze damage, in the summer you risk biofilm buildup. Better to leave the tub full and running on its lowest setting, with plenty of chlorine to keep it sanitized while you’re not using it.

If you must drain the tub, vacuum as many lines as you can with a shop vac against the jets and leave the drain caps off. In the winter, leave a light on in the equipment compartment to keep the pipes from freezing.

3. What’s wrong with my ozone bubbles?

If you don’t have any bubbles at all, the air is blocked somewhere along the line. That tubing should be cleaned once a year at least, and you might have to replace a check valve or tubing if a blockage has built up.

If you have bubbles but your water is still musty or cloudy, you may be getting air without ozone. The unit is designed to last two or three years. You can buy a simple 30-second test to check for ozone. The hot tub doesn’t require ozone, but if you don’t have it, you’ll need to add chlorine more often and the water quality will not be easy to maintain. Without a working ozonator, you’ll have to work much harder to keep the water clear, clean and safe.

If you’re not clear what an ozonator does or why it’s essential. check out our blog post: “The Secret to Easy Hot Tub Water Care: Ozone”.

4. Why do I need to drain and refill my spa every four months?

We recommend the four-month cycle in order to get rid of the old chemicals, called Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) that accumulate in your water over time. The chemicals stop working after a while, but they’re still in the water and make it harder to keep clean and clear.

5. Why should I use special chemicals in my spa?

First of all, it’s important to use water care products made for spas instead of the much stronger pool chemicals that can damage your hot tub and even make the water unsafe for bathing. Among the choices for spa chemicals, remember – you get what you pay for. Cut-rate products from big-box stores might include more fillers and cheaper chemicals, making them much less of a bargain. They also are likely to be from a foreign country and made without the strict standards we have in the US. We’re talking about water you bathe in. Olympic Hot Tub Company uses SeaKlear Spa Products, made locally in Washington State with only the highest-grade ingredients – so you can relax.

Thank you, Dennis, for giving us the straight scoop. You must have hot tub questions of your own. We’ll be happy to answer them, so send us your questions via the comment section below.

It’s no secret that ozone is the key to easy hot tub care. Most hot tubs built in the last 10 years have a built-in ozone generator or are set up so you can add one easily. So, what is ozone and why is it the best thing for sanitizing your hot tub?

Why Ozone?

Spa ozone is the most powerful oxidizer and disinfectant that can be safely used in spas. It kills all known bacteria, viruses, yeasts and a lot of other things you don’t want to know about.

1. Ozone offers an alternative to heavy doses of traditional chemicals such as bromine and chlorine. Ozone can’t completely eliminate these chemicals, but it drastically reduces the required amounts.

2. Ozone is a safe, proven technology. It leaves no chemical taste or smell, it’s environmentally sound and it’s gentle on your equipment. In fact, the only by-product of ozone is pure oxygen.

3. Ozone eliminates chloramines, the smelly, irritating, toxic by-product of chlorine.

4. Ozone oxidizes (burns off) problem compounds often found in spas such as hydrogen sulfides and iron manganese.

5. Ozone helps shock your spa to get rid of oils and other organic compounds that combine to make the unsightly “spa scum ring” and when left untreated require more chemicals to make your spa clean.

What kind of Ozone should I get?

There are two kinds of ozone generators. One uses UV (Ultra Violet light energy) and the other uses CD (Corona Discharge electrical energy). UV light mimics sunlight. Unfortunately, UV lamps produce a low output that starts to diminish from the minute its first turned on. The costly lamps must be replaced frequently. For these reasons we do not recommend and do not sell UV ozone generators. CD energy, however, is more like lightning in a bottle. It “zaps” the water as it passes by the generator killing all germs & bacteria. It is highly concentrated, uses less much energy than UV, is safe and is perfect for producing ozone in spas. Therefore, we recommend and sell corona discharge ozone units only.

Is Ozone all I need to sanitize and keep my spa water clean?

The quick answer is “no” but you can eliminate much of your customary sanitizer and shock with a properly functioning ozonator. The perfect combination with ozone is SilkBalance natural water care for spas and hot tubs. Environmentally safe, SilkBalance works constantly in conjunction with the ozonator to keep spa water pure.

You will still need to add a small amount of sanitizer such chlorine or combined chlorine & shock. The EPA has not approved any sanitary system that does not include at least some amount of chlorine or combined chlorine and shock.

If you already have a hot tub with an ozonator

Did you know that you have to check it periodically to find out if it’s working?

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR SPA OZONATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED EVERY 18-24 MONTHS?

If you don’t replace it, you’re losing the most important part of the sanitation system for keeping your spa clean & pure for bathing. Just because you see bubbles doesn’t mean it’s working. .

Spring Special on Ozonators at Olympic Hot Tub Company! Get set for spring and summer with a new ozonator for the cleanest water.

REPLACE YOUR OZONATOR NOW AND SAVE $150.

30 SECOND OZONE DETECTION KIT

DISTURBING FACT: Research indicates that up to 60% of older ozone generators are not producing sufficient levels of ozone for sanitation. The presence of bubbles from the spa’s ozone jet does not indicate adequate production of ozone. Is your ozone generator functioning properly? Find out now! Regularly $12.95. Save $2.00 Now only $10.95. Buy the Ozone Detector.

1. Soak in the hot tub before dinner. This tip can really help you avoid calories. See our post on diminishing your appetite by hot tubbing before a meal from January of last year. How about eating less and getting the benefits of exercise at the same time? Guaranteed way to eat less: drink an 8oz glass of water then soak in your Hot Spring Spa for 2o minutes before dinner. You will eat far less because your appetite diminishes after hot tub soaking.

2. Lose weight while you sleep! Hot tubbing before bed leads to a better sleep which helps you avoid weight gain! This surprising news was featured in our post on March 11, 2011. Sleep more and weigh less? Is this true?
3. Do as the Japanese Do. There’s nothing like yu (hot water) to combat the blues and keep the body warm and supple say the Japanese. It’s a daily custom whose pleasure never dims with time. But after learning about the Japanese concept of yu in our post from November 2008 and the concept of considering hot water bathing as a full meal, I’m adding weight loss to my thoughts about hot tubbing! Thinking of hot tubbing as the equivalent of a full meal is a great way to avoid calorie overload.
