Shopping for your first hot tub? You’re probably looking for a little help the shopping waters. The best advice we give to new buyers is to take a test soak before purchasing a hot tub.

There are some things you can only figure out with your shoes off! You wouldn’t buy a car without taking a test drive. Be sure to “Try before you Buy” a hot tub! So, if you’re cruising hot tub stores this week looking for a hot tub, decide what you like. But before you put a deposit down, test soak.

Get Wet!!

We’ve had hot tubs ready for test dips since our first day in business 36 years ago. At Olympic Hot Tub Company, we believe that only by trying before you buy will you find the hot tub that best suits you and your family for a the best in relaxation and health benefits.

1. Remember Goldilocks.

You want a hot tub that’s just right. And, the only way to find it is to test it wet. Take a test soak to judge the space. Bring the kids with you-everyone in your family who will be using the hot tub at the same time. Does the tub you’re considering have enough room for your family? Not too big; not too small! Also, think of your backyard space. You’ll want a hot tub that fits your landscape.

2. Seating depth matters.

Note the torso depth when you’re sitting up comfortably. In the Northwest, you’ll want the water depth to be over your shoulders so you can be warm & snuggy on cold, rainy nights.

3. Don’t neglect your feet.

Is there enough foot room in the foot well? Are there jets to massage your tired feet?

4. Select the best seats in the house.

Multi-level seating should accommodate both adults and children. A ‘cool down” seat for adults should be elevated enough that it’s comfortable for small children. Make sure there are seats that fit everyone in your family. It’s important to test the lounge seat. Some people love them; others don’t because they float off. Make sure any lounge seats fit you and other family members. See our post on Hot Tub Seating: Lounge or No Lounge.

5. It’s all about the jets.

Pay attention to jet types and jet placement. Most hot tub users prefer to adjust jet pressure for the hydrotherapy they’re seeking. Too, most people prefer a variety of jets that hit their sore spots-like calf, wrist, shoulder and back jets. Check out the jet placement to see that they are focused on the spots where you need relief.

6. Listen for the silence.

A truly quiet hot tub like a Hot Spring has no audible noise when the water is circulating, heating and filtering. You don’t want any noise when it’s running not only for your own peace of mind, but that of your neighbors. You’re buying a hot tub for relaxation. Don’t add irritating noise that spoils your peace & quiet.

7. Take a deep breath and smell the water!

Our Olympic Hot Tub Company showroom hot tubs are set up with SilkBalance natural water care or ACE salt water care for the easiest water care and no smells. There’s no chlorine smell or skin drying chemicals in a Hot Spring Spa with SilkBalance or ACE. Crystal clean water without effort or hassle should be your #1 concern.

8. Feel the water.

Note how your skin feels after soaking. You’ll notice the difference with SilkBalance natural water care or ACE salt water care. Your skin will feel silky smooth with none of the dryness that results from soaking in chlorine and masses of other chemicals.

Schedule a FREE test soak at any of Olympic Hot Tub Company’s 5 Puget Sound area showrooms today!

The weather forecast predicts a high of 81° on Sunday. Golfers rejoice. How many times have you been able to bask in the sun in early May as you hit the links?

Did you know that you don’t actually have to be on the golf course to improve your game?! I’ll bet that you haven’t had much actual golf time since the last fall. Why not start to practice now to improve your game before you tee off.

Don’t be envious when you watch others on the links. Think hot tub to improve your game.

Here are 7 ways to improve your golf game while you hot tub in good weather or bad.

1. STRENGTHEN YOUR HAND MUSCLES. Strengthen your wrists and the dozens of tiny muscles in your hands by laying a dishrag (or washcloth) on the edge of the hot tub. Crumple it into a tight ball, letting go and repeating a dozen times with each hand. Do this 3-4 times weekly. What a great way to get a better grip when you’re putting.

2. USE THERAPEUTIC BANDS. These stretchy bands are really great for strengthening and stretching shoulder muscles in ways that expensive gym equipment does not. Shoulder muscles, particularly rotator cuffs are easily injured and will keep you off the course for a long time if they become injured. A strong chest is needed for an effective swing.

Hold the band overhead with both hands so that you feel some tension in the band. Increase or decrease the tension in the band by gripping it widely or narrowly. Slowly lower the band behind your back, then up over your head and then down to your belt line. Resistance will increase when the band hits the water giving you a greater workout.

3. SHARPEN YOUR MENTAL FOCUS. It’s been said that the most important six inches in golf are between the ears. There are a number of books that help the avid golfer sharpen his/her mental focus and perform better under pressure. A good book to take to the hot tub (reading it on your Aqua Reader so it won’t get wet) is “Golf is Not A Game of Perfect” by Bob Rotella, PhD, which offers some excellent visualization techniques. You can also get it as an audio download to play on your ipod. These are techniques that can be done easily while you’re soaking in your Hot Spring Spa and perfectly relaxed.

4. DAYDREAM YOUR PERFECT GAME. This is the perfect thing to do in the hot tub especially when it’s raining and you can’t get on the links. Daydreaming about the game has been proven to have a positive effect on performance. Recent studies have shown that while physical practice is the most beneficial, mentally practicing your swing and desired ball flight and outcome is more beneficial than doing nothing at all.

Picture the sound and feel of solid contact from the tee, the flight of the drive, the club you choose for your approach shot, the contour of the green, etc. Play the first several holes in your mind until you start to lose focus.

5. THINK IT THROUGH. Rehearse all scenarios in your mind, so you’ll have a plan of action no matter what happens. What better place to do that then in your hot tub? Write down your memories of past victories on your AquaNotes while tubbing. Studies have shown that seeing a reminder of past success leads to better performance.

6. WATCH GOLF HOW TO VIDEOS ON YOU iPad AS YOU SOAK. No need to worry about wrecking your iPad when you use the amazing DryCase for iPad.

7. LIMBER UP BEFORE PLAY. Prepare for a tennis or golf game by warming up in the hot tub. Move your joints through their full range of motion and condition your muscles. Guaranteed to improve your match or beat your handicap! As we age, we all get stiffer. Also, as we age, it takes longer to recover from muscle pulls & sprains. Do yourself a favor-take steps to avoid injury by limbering up in your own Hot Spring Spa from Olympic Hot Tub.

8. JUST BREATHE. It’s the quickest and easiest way to clam your nerves. Inhale through your nose as you say to yourself, “I’m breathing in strength.” Exhale through your mouth as you think I’m breathing out tension. Practicing this quick mantra in your hot tub will have big results on the golf course.

Source: An article by Joel Zuckerman, a freelance golf & travel writer who’s has played nearly 800 golf courses around the world. Impressive. He know his golf!

There is a far deeper relaxation effect that takes place outdoors. When you take time for a hot tub break outdoors, the mental health benefits may surprise you.

Dr. Jules Pretty, at the Center for Environment and Society in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Essex, in England makes a strong case for “being in nature”. Irrespective of where we come from in the world, it seems that the presence of living things makes us feel good.

There are three levels of engagement with nature he says.

*The first is passive viewing of nature, as through a window, or in a book, on television or in a painting.

*The second is being in the presence of nearby nature, which is incidental to some other activity, such as walking or cycling to work, or reading on a garden seat, and (we’ve added this one) soaking in a hot tub outdoors.

*The third level is active participation and involvement with nature, such as gardening, hiking or running.

There is now strong evidence that all these levels deliver mental health benefits. The levels with the most involvement deliver the most benefits.

A recent survey of our Olympic Hot Tub Company Hot Spring Spa owners echoed Dr. Pretty’s research regarding to his second point of engagement with nature. All of the Hot Spring Spa owners we surveyed reported immense pleasure, increased mental relaxation and peace of mind from soaking in their outdoor hot tubs.

They all said that being in the presence of nature was the “frosting on the cake”, the “cherry on the sundae” that capped the experience and took it from the mundane to the sublime.

It was the reason they rarely missed a night’s soaking.

It was the reason why their own yards gained a bigger place in their lives.

Outside soaking brought a new appreciation of the previously unseen natural world to hot tub users. Hot tub owners mentioned owls, squirrels, raccoons, the wind, stars, the trees and far vistas all never before seen in their day to day lives. So in addition to the great physiological benefits, the mental/spiritual benefits were the most deeply moving.

From my own experience I, too, have been profoundly moved by soaking in my roof top Hot Spring while viewing the stars and satellites (!), feeling the wind and the rain on my face and just letting go of all daily cares and worries. Plus I get my best ideas in the hot tub!

How about you? Does soaking outside in your hot tub deepened your appreciation of the natural world?

Is your yard more important to you now than before you had a hot tub?

Pleasure is serious business or as the Romans said it RES EST SEVERA VOLUPTAS. business.

It’s true we don’t have credentials in counseling, we just sell hot tubs which are a great invention for a happy marriage. Many couples say it’s a “must have” to keep romance and closeness alive.

We do know from 36 years of experience and close to 19,000 hot tub sales that hot tubbing is a great way to live “happily ever after. “ This being Couples Appreciation Month, I wanted to share some tips about hot tubbing and relationship building that our customers have shared with us.

Do you know what all happy and healthy marriages have in common? In every one of them you will find two people committed to making each other happy.

The old saw “marriage is a 50/50 proposition” is way out of date. Marriage is 100/100. We live in very selfish times. Pop-psychology messages are everywhere in the media encouraging us to love ourselves, do right by ourselves, and generally please ourselves first.

If you really want a happy marriage, you can’t buy into self-centered thinking. Instead, try these 6 time-tested techniques and experience the happiness, peace, and tranquility of a healthy marriage with more than a little help from your hot tub!

1. Make time for each other. It’s so easy in our hyper-busy modern lifestyles to forget to set aside a little time to enjoy each others company. Start a weekly tradition of setting a date for the two of you to be together doing something you both enjoy. Keep it simple. Olympic Hot Tub spa owners have shared the fact that hot tubbing together makes a partnership stronger. Talking to each other, getting to know each other on a daily basis is the social currency that keeps relationships strong.

2. Take time off from each other. The best thing you can do is take time to hot tub alone regularly. When you’re centered and truly relaxed, you’ll find the energy and will to better appreciate your partner.

3. Make little romantic gestures. Remember to compliment your spouse. Leave a love note for them to meet you in the hot tub. Celebrate the day you first met. Send flowers for no particular reason. Give each other a hand reflexology massage while you hot tub. Take some tips from our post on creating a memorable Valentine’s Day evening in the hot tub. Any day can be Valentine’s Day!

4. Listen to your spouse. Husbands, remember that women need to express their feelings. Be a good sport and just listen. Don’t interrupt, or get distracted. Empathize with her. Let her know that you can relate to what she’s feeling. Ladies, please remember that the kind of talk you might like to have with your husband does not come naturally to most men. Just be patient. It’s not a good idea to “unload” on him right when he comes home from work. The best time to listen to each other: when you’re in the hot tub together. You’re relaxed and away from it all. What better time to listen deeply.

5. Trust in each other. Don’t be suspicious. To help ensure the trust, be honest with your spouse in all things. Never keep secrets from each other, not even little ones. The hot tub’s a perfect place to share your secrets with each other. What’s shared in the hot tub stays in the hot tub.

6. Make it your aim to be your spouse’s best friend. Appreciate your spouse for who they are. Loosen up and have fun with each other and what better place than in the hot tub when you’re relaxed and together. If you are practicing the steps above, you are on your way to being your spouse’s best friend – the ultimate relationship in marriage.

Original idea from Slade Hartwell. Thank you, Slade. Husband and wife team Slade and Elena Hartwell created ezromantic.com to share their original ideas on romance building with the world.

If you’ve just “seen it in the light”, take a minute to read the tips from our Valet Team Coordinator, Rob Anderson our Olympic Hot Tub expert on how to clean your hot tub. With his tips, you’ll be able to restore your hot tub to like-new and making your water care regimen easier. The cleaner your shell & pipes are, the better water quality you’ll have on a consistent basis. Have a supply of soft dry towels and elbow grease on hand, grab the products and tools mentioned below and you’re ready to start.

Thanks to Rob for these Valet cleaning tips:

1. System Flush first. If your tub hasn’t been drained or maintained for a while, add SeaKlear System Flush® the night before draining so all the work on the shell doesn’t go to waste when you turn the jets back on. System Flush cleans out any mold, organic matter or bio-film from the plumbing lines. Let sit overnight and then drain. Cleans out all the gunk that you can’t see in pipes & jets ensuring a bacteria free clean start with your new water.

2. The Best Hot Tub Cleaning Products. Gel Gloss and the Merlin Eraser Sponge are the best products for cleaning your spa shell. Gel Gloss is a great all around cleaner for the shell. It’s thick and effective for removing oils, dirt, and scum from all spa surfaces and won’t scratch. It protects your spa surface and repels dirt. What more could you ask from a product? Got tile or a stubborn stain line? The Merlin Eraser Sponge works wonders on both. Warning: Suds are the enemy of a clean hot tub. Avoid any products that create a lot of suds, which are very difficult to rinse out.

3. The Tools. One of the tools our Valet Team uses in the field is a soft bristle deck brush with a long handle so they can scrub the shell without having to crawl into the tub. This especially helps when the tub is up against a wall and they can’t walk around the sides.

Other tools that come in handy are a sump pump and a small wet dry vac. The sump pump will speed draining time and the wet dry vac will get the last bit of water out of the foot well. All of these tools really cut down on the time it takes to clean the tub. Even so, a proper cleaning will take at least a couple of hours.

4. The Best Way to Restore Your Hot Tub Finish. If your Hot Spring Spa has a newer style smooth shell (Pearl, Champagne Opal, etc.), you probably have some minor scratching from everyday use. This can easily be resolved using Meguiar’s Scratch-X sold at most auto parts stores. To apply rub it on with a soft cloth or sponge and buff out with a terry cloth towel. Repeat as necessary to bring back that factory-new finish.

5. While you’re at it, spiff up your cover. 303 Aerospace Protectant is, in my opinion, the very best product to use on the hot tub covers. A little bit goes a long way, but it is important to make sure the cover is clean prior to applying.

6. While you’re at it, clean your filters before replacing and refilling the tub with water. See the post from April 2nd that’s all about filter cleaning and care.

7. Refill, sanitize and balance the water. Heat and enjoy. Happy Soaking!

If the thought of cleaning your hot tub is too overwhelming or time-consuming for you, why do it yourself? Trust your hot tub to Olympic Hot Tub’s professional Valet Service. Hire Olympic Hot Tub’s Valet Team for a one-time drain and clean or ongoing service. You can relax! We take the work out of relaxing. You’ll find your hot tub clean and ready whenever you want to use it.

And, who ever thought of actually doing it?

Turns out its really important to clean out those lines because most “icky stuff” hides where you can’t see it. Now deep clean your hot tub the easy way. SeaKlear Spa System Flush® actively “scrubs” your pipes to dissolve the gunk that builds up inside the parts of your hot tub that you’ll never see.

Spa System Flush attacks the root cause of most hot tub water care problems: the build up of organic waste. Organic contaminants like oils, lotions, cosmetics, hair products and sweat concentrate in hot tub water to produce scum lines, cloudy water, clogged hot tub filters, bad odors, foaming and and. These contaminants collect and build up in your hot tub circulation system and filters.

Spa System Flush restores hot tub plumbing and jets to like-new condition. The effectiveness can be seen in minutes. It’s compatible with all sanitizers, including chlorine, bromine, and ozone. Contains no harsh chemicals and it’s made right here in Washington state.

It’s so easy to use! Just add Spa System Flush to your water the night before you drain your Hot Spring Spa . First remove all filters. Turn on circulation system to high with all jets running. Add ½ bottle per 400 gallons to the hot tub. Run the jets at high for 15-30 minutes. We recommend you leave System Flush in the tub overnight to ensure plumbing and parts get a thorough cleaning. The next day drain water and clean the hot tub shell. A small amount of Spa System Flush on a sponge can be used to wipe down the residue on the walls (rubber gloves should be worn). Use entire bottle for hot tubs over 400 gallons. Reinstall filters, refill and balance hot tub water.

When to use SeaKlear Spa System Flush:

1. Any time you change sanitation methods, flush out the plumbing lines with Spa System Flush. This “purge” removes all conflicting sanitizer residues from inside your hot tub and helps you stabilize your water chemistry.

Making the switch to SilkBalance for your Hot Spring Spa for the first time? If you are converting an older or previously used hot tub to SilkBalance, you must prepare the tub before using it. The hot tub plumbing lines must be PURGED with Spa System Flush before draining and changing the water in order to get the best results.

2. When you’ve purchased a used hot tub or one that has been sitting for long periods without use.

3. Anytime your hot tub smells musty, moldy or you can’t get the water clear or balance the water chemistry.

4. We also recommend using SeaKlear Spa System Flush once a year for all hot tubs to ensure a bacteria free start to your new hot tubbing season. Make it habit to use Spa System Flush when you spring clean your tub for a truly deep clean. The active ingredients leave your hot tub with a fresh, clean scent.

Get SeaKlear Spa System Flush online or in any Olympic Hot Tub our store.

2. Home Entertainment: Sound Waves

Your tub sessions can sound as good as they feel with Hot Spring’s optional integrated wireless entertainment systems. Nearly all the Hot Spring models are entertainment-ready with four integrated and illuminated speakers.

Add a Wireless TV. Add Wireless Sound with Bluetooth Technology paired with a Wireless In-Home Dock. Add Wireless Sound with Bluetooth Technology. Whether you’re setting the mood for a splashy party or a romantic interlude for two, only Hot Spring offers sound investments that guarantee a noteworthy entertainment experience for the whole family.

3. Environmentally Friendly and Energy Efficient.

Today’s Hot Spring Spas use less power than just a few years ago. Exclusive Hot Spring benefits like full-foam insulation, heat capture systems, LED lights, corona discharge ozone systems, custom fit insulated covers and synthetic wood cabinets that will not warp or let cold air in are built-in for maximum efficiency. Typically the average new Hot Spring costs between $15-$35 month to operate versus as much as $75.00 a month to operate older tubs (not Hot Spring Spas) or most new hot tubs with little or no insulation.

4. Clean, Clear Water the Simple and Natural Way.

The revolutionary new SilkBalance® natural water care system eliminates testing, mixing and adding a host of chemicals to keep the water pure and clean. With the help of the corona discharge ozone system that’s standard on all Hot Spring Spas, SilkBalance needs only 3-4 ounces once a week and the addition of small amounts of sanitizer or shock after you soak. That’s all. Olympic provides SilkBalance with all Hot Spring Spas for your health, and peace of mind. So, if you don’t select the ACE system, SilkBalance is the next best thing.

5. Easiest Hot Tub To Use

Hot Spring Spas topside control panel is so advanced, there’s no guesswork. Everything from temperature to jet settings is clearly displayed. Go for simplicity. Hot Spring Spas’ control panel is easy to operate and requires no programming! The ready light lets you see from inside your home that all systems are on and ready for use.

6. The Best Massage.

Hot Spring Spas provide more jet therapy than ever before. Jets now provide a variety of actions; everything from pressure point jets to pulsing massage spinners. More jet variety means that you can enjoy a full body massage before getting out of the tub. Jets provide you with a complete relaxation session as well as aiding in invigorating your body when you’re tired. Massaging action from your neck to your toes will remove the kinks and knots earned from a stressful day.

7. Long Lasting Beauty.

Hot Spring’s Everwood® cabinets retain their good looks for years. Gone are the old wood cabinets, which soon turned black and mossy in our northwest weather. Today’s Everwood cabinets are made of synthetic materials recycled for the good of the environment. You’ll never have to sand, stain and seal a hot tub cabinet again. A huge time saver.

8. Magical Lighting and Bubbling Fountains for Soothing Sound

With the introduction of LED lighting, the Hot Spring Spa experience is now more romantic and dramatic than ever. There are lights that encircle the tub, mood lighting to color the water on a rotating basis and lights that light your way to the tub. And these LED lights cost far less to operate and last longer than conventional lighting.

New fountains that are backlit with LED lighting will be the centerpieces of your backyard escape. Bubbling fountains add a tranquil aspect to tubbing. Many scientific studies show that sitting by a fountain or waterfall is very soothing. Hot Spring Spas give you more relaxation at home with their many water features.

9. Euro-Styling and Beautiful Colors

Hot Spring has modernized the look of the backyard hot tub with new Euro-styling that remakes the boxy look of older spas and replaces it with sleek styling. New colors that are more vibrant add depth to the water especially at night. Seating now is multi-level so that every member of the family has a place. Cabinets come in the most popular wood colors from faux redwood, African wenge and cape cod gray. Some Hot Spring models can be customized with faux stone to match many landscaping projects.

10. Silent Operation.

Hot Spring is the only spa you dare put outside your bedroom window or on a deck!
