What’s that in the Hot Tub? Forget Water. Try Red Wine, Green Tea, Coffee, Sake & Chocolate!

Red wine is just one bathing option at this resort. Green tea, sake, coffee and chocolate available, too!

Red wine is just one bathing option at this resort. Green tea, sake, coffee and chocolate available, too!

Do you ever wish you had something besides water to put in your hot tub?

Wish no more…there are many, many liquids poured into hot tubs the world over.

For many residents of Japan, that wish is fufilled at the  Yunessun Spa Resort in Hakone, Japan.  Customers there have the chance to “cleanse” themselves in a variety of unorthodox hot tubs  filled with everything from green tea to red wine to sake.

The spa’s red wine treatment is only available for a 12-day period each year, but includes a 12-foot bottle of wine so visitors can drink while they bathe. The spa, part of a Japanese amusement park, considers bathing in wine a rejuvenator for the body and claims it’s something that Cleopatra did frequently along with bathing in milk.

Wine spas with wine-based treatments are available around the world, though not all of them let you do the breaststroke in vino. Mathilde Thomas, originator of the wine spa trend, claims wine bathing offers no benefits.

Despite the strange ingredient twists, Yunessun’s other baths do offer unique health benefits. A sake bath has the potential to remove freckles and age spots, evidenced by the rice wine’s use in a variety of skin products. The spa’s green tea bath features tea from the Tanzawa and Hakone mountains, and the plant has positive effects that include boosting skin health and the immune system.

And while gulping down a sugar-laden Pumpkin Spice Latte may not be good for you, swimming in caffeinated coffee could be the most effective wake-up money can buy. That’s the word on this popular way to bathe.

Less healthful, but for those with a sweet tooth, the spa also offers a chocolate bath on Valentine’s Day.  Book your airfare now!

It could be easy to dismiss Yunessun’s hot tubs as a gimmick, but the water park and spa has many positive reviews on Trip Advisor, with reviewers labeling a trip there a “novel” and “relaxing” experience.

Try this at home in your Hot Spring Spa?  If you’ve got the money, and don’t mind cleaning up a big mess & getting new filters, go for the sake bath, at least. I’d skip the wine, chocolate and green tea versions until that trip to Japan.

If you’ve tried any of these bathing options, do share your experiences with us!

7 Hot Tub Water Care Headaches You Can Eliminate When You Switch to SilkBalance

Super Bowl Hot Tub Party: 9 Tips For A Great Time

Delicious finger food is the best choice for a hot tub party.

Delicious finger food is the best choice for a hot tub party.

SUPER BOWL YOUR HOT TUB!!

Submerging yourself in the heated water, surrounded by the massaging jets and your best pals is a great way to watch the Super Bowl.

Your Hot Spring Spa gives you the best seat in the house  to catch the action and guarantee everyone a great time. Follow these tips for a great party:

1. CHECK YOUR HOT TUB SUPPLIES NOW!

There’s nothing worse than going for a dip, opening the lid and finding skanky water and realizing you’re out of supplies to clear it up.

Missing shock, SilkBalance or chlorine?  Get to an Olympic Hot Tub store today or tomorrow and re-stock.  With company coming for the Super Bowl, you’ll want your hot tub clean and ready to go.

Stock up NOW so you’ll have enough to have clean, clear water in your hot tub for the big game. Better to be stocked up than scrambling.

2. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HOT TUB DURING THE GAME.

Keep the water chemistry in balance and sanitizer levels up. You want your friends to come back, don’t you? An unbalanced, unsanitized hot tub can lead to real problems for all hot tubbbers. A temperature of 102 is a good starting place for most people.  Make sure that you and your guests get out before you get over-heated!

3. CLEAN YOUR FILTERS BEFORE THE PARTY.

Use our SeaKlear Spa Filter Cleaner Spray a liquid product that greatly improves filter life and efficiency.  It is specially made to cleanse body oil & lotions from spa cartridge filters.  Used regularly it will extend filter life and assures proper filtration.

If they’re over 2-3 years old, you’re in need of new ones.  Stop by an Olympic Hot Tub store for new filters or filter cleaner for you Hot Spring Spa today or tomorrow.

4. MAINTAIN THE WATER LEVEL.

Water does evaporate more rapidly off the hot tub surface during cold, dry weather.  Make sure that the water is above the skimmer line so you’ll have continued filtration and operational jets.  With more soakers, that water level will go down fast.

5. DRINKS. Save the alcohol for after soaking.

I know that sounds so boring! My advice? Have a selection of bottled waters, juices and sodas on hand to keep soakers hydrated while soaking.

Alcohol? Alcohol is a depressant while hot water is a stimulant. As you sit in hot water your metabolism is reved up faster than normal.  Alcohol’s effects are felt much more quickly in a hot tub. Drink alcohol and a major hangover is a sure thing the next day.

Save wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks for after soaking.  You don’t want your guests to regret the day they accepted your invitation.

6. PARTY FOOD. KEEP IT ON THE LIGHT SIDE.

Stick to finger food that can be eaten in or out of the tub.  What works best for hot tub parties?  Easy to eat items like veggies & dip, fresh fruit on skewers, chicken or shrimp kabobs, egg rolls, fresh rolls, spring rolls.

Avoid chips-potato, corn, extra crunchy whatever- in the tub.  If spilled, all chips make a party-ending, gummy mess!

7. EXTRA TOWELS-A MUST.

You can never have enough towels! Guests may get in and out of the tub multiple times, leading to damp towels that stop doing their job.

Keep lots of clean, fresh towels on hand and stay on top of putting wet towels in the washer & dryer.  Your guests will love you for it and so will your upholstered lawn furniture, carpets & floors.

8. ADD MUSIC  & ACCESSORIES!

Make your hot tub area festive. With the right hot tub accessories, you can make your Super Bowl hot tub experience super enjoyable. Why not add a new step, safety rail, or a towel rack?  There are a variety of hot tub accessories that you can add to your hot tub to make it convenient, stylish and more enjoyable.  Check out our other party tips here.

Call the Olympic Hot Tub store nearest you for ideas. Check out our estore for the latest hot tub  accessories.

9. HAVE FUN :-) .

If you, the host, aren’t having a good time, your guests won’t either. Sit back, relax and have a ball at your own Super Bowl Hot Tub Party. You can never foresee all of the problems that can and do arise, so just go with the flow. Your guests will appreciate your attitude to the day and have fun themselves.

Hot Tub Help for Holiday Stress

Whirled Peace on Earth

Hot tub help for holiday stress

Stress increases when you’re too busy for leisure time to relax, unwind and spend quality time reconnecting with family and friends. Sound you’re your holiday season? Your Hot Spring Spa can help. Schedule some time every day to soak away you stress, boost your health, and enjoy the company of friends and family all at the same time. Here are some hints for how to use your hot tub during the holidays and more:

Early Valentine’s Day

Who cares what holiday it is? Leave a note for your loved one to propose an after-work rendezvous in the hot tub. Light some candles, put on some soft music and relax together where only the stars can see you.

The Family that Soaks Together

Take a break from the hectic holiday schedule for a family gathering in the hot tub. You’ll be making memories for the children, and even teenagers often feel like opening up in the warm flow.

Follow that Star

Who knows what you see when you look up from the hot tub on a clear winter’s night? Check the Stardate website every week to see what’s in the night sky, and use the Star Walk app for your iPhone to learn the stars in depth.

 Work It Out

Exercising in the warm water is a gentle blessing for joints and muscles. The buoyancy reduces your weight by 90 percent for free-floating comfort, relieving even arthritis or fibromyalgia, and the water resistance can build muscle strength.

Wake-up Call

Enjoy your hot tub in the morning with a cup of tea or coffee. Just 10 minutes at 102°F will energize you. Warning: Stay in longer, and you may start to feel too relaxed to “get up and go.”  Many hot tub owners prefer winter wake-ups in the tub to ease gently into their day. They report that watching the birds and enjoying a short “nature break” before beginning their hectic schedules makes them feel better all day.

The Still Hot Tub in a Turning World

Getting away from it all, alone in the water, you can relax, reflect and rejuvenate, shedding all the holiday stress and emerging  recharged.

Ring out the Old, Ring in the New

There’s no better place to be at midnight on Dec. 31 than your Hot Spring Spa from Olympic Hot Tub.  Soak in heavenly peace, contemplate the year ahead, and resolve to spend more time in the tub, alone, with family and with friends in the new year.

Hot Tub Bliss Blog Celebrates 600th Post of Everything You Need to Know About Hot Tubbing

After more than four years of Hot Tub Bliss Blog, I’ve reached the 600-post milestone.  I though it would be fun to share the list of the Top 10 most-read posts:

10. “Stress Headache Relief Formula: Hot Tub + Coffee + Ibuprofen.” Readers must suffer lots of headaches. Maybe it’s the economy, or just normal life, as the poet said: “Show me someone who’s never had a headache, and I’ll show you someone who’s never lived.” Plenty of people opened this post and found out that the combination works better than any of the three treatments alone.

9. “Suffer from Fibromyalgia? Use a Hot Tub Regularly to Ease Pain, Improve Sleep & Mood.” The invisible, chronic symptoms of fibromyalgia don’t just go away, but lifestyle modifications – including tub soaks – can help conserve energy and minimize pain.

8. “Hot Tub Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes Reduces Sugar Levels and Improves Sleep.” More than 5 million Americans suffer from Type 2 diabetes, and many of them work to reduce symptoms and conquer the illness without medication.  Hot tubs can help.  And, that’s a fact proven by research.  If you or anyone you know suffers from Type 2 diabetes, start hot tubbing!

7. “What’s the #2 Reason People Hate Their Hot Tubs?” The surprise answer: Hot tub noise. Noisy hot tubs make bad neighbors, intrude on your solitude and can ruin your relaxation.  More and more people are waking up to this fact and having their sleep literally disturbed by a neighbor’s noisy hot tub.

6. “How to Claim Your Hot Tub as a Medical Deduction on your 2011 Return.”

If you’re medical insurance won’t pay for your hot tub, maybe the IRS will allow a medical deduction for it. If you have a doctor’s prescription and follow a few rules, that’s a real possibility! It won’t hurt to check it out.  You can always ask. They may or may not say no!

5. “Cloudy Hot Tub Water? Learn How to clear it Up Now!” This cleared up a relaxation-inhibiting problem for lots of readers.  Cloudy water is the bane of thousands if not millions of hot tub owners. If you’re one with perpetually cloudy water, read this post & end it forever-guaranteed!.

4. “Hot Tub Etiquette – Everything You Need to Know to Entertain with Ease.” It’s nice to have such polite readers. New hot tub owners want a handy guide to put their guests at ease, and visitors want to know what’s OK and what’s not when they’re invited to a friend’s tub. All the answers here.

3. “How To Get Insurance to Pay for Hot Tub Therapy.” If you have a diagnosed medical condition, insurance might pay for home hot tub treatments. Many people suffer from some of the hundreds of medical issues that can be eased with hot tubbing, and insurance companies often appreciate the benefits by reimbursing you for your purchase.

2. “Hot Tub in Hot Weather to Stay Cool.” High temperatures across the country for the past two summers drove many readers to learn how hot tubbing is cool.

Drum roll, please. The most-read Hot Tub Bliss blog post is:

1. “Public Hot Tubs – 7 Tips You Must Know Before You Soak.” People want to know how to tell whether public hot tubs are safe and clean. People who don’t have their own hot tub yet need to learn the signs, and even hot tub owners need to recognize the pitfalls of public soaking.

Thanks to you my loyal readers for reading Hot Tub Bliss, sending your suggestions & posting your comments. Was your favorite post not on the list? Share it in the comments section, won’t you?

Here’s to the next 600 posts!  Don’t worry – I won’t run out of ideas. They keep bubbling up. Hot tubbing is always inspirational, right?

Hot Tub Bliss Blog Celebrates 4th Anniversary

It’s hard to believe it’s been four years of blogging about hot tubs and hot tubbing here on Hot Tub Bliss.

Thanks for all of your comments, suggestions, and encouragement.

I’ve enjoyed writing about all things “hot tub” and “sauna” including hot tub and sauna health benefits, lifestyle, water care and Hot Spring Spas and Finnleo Saunas.   The largest response to any post? “More on How to Save the Whales While Soaking In Your Hot Tub”.  Most read post: “Public Hot Tubs: What You Must Know Before You Soak”.

I write Hot Tub Bliss is to connect you with all things from “ahhh” to “aHa”. The “ahhhs” are the sounds that escape when you sink into the hot swirling waters after a long day.  That hot water is so soothing and healing that letting out a big  sigh  is the only way to stand the pleasure.

The “aHas”-are those ideas and split-second inspirations that bubble up when you’re relaxed. Inspiration and “brainstorms” have always been an important part of hot tub soaking. The “staycations” you enjoy every day in your own backyard hot tub can bring quiet and sometimes awe inspiring pleasure.  So, do share your “aHas!”

And, for fun, tell me about the fabulous vacations you’ve taken with your Olympic Hot Tub  rubber duck in hand. Some of your ducks have seen the Seven Wonders of the World, and we have photos from hundreds of exotic places to prove it. Remember to pack a duck in your suitcase and take it along on your next vacation.  Place the duck in interesting spots and send the photos to us.  We’d love to see how far these ducks travel.

So, chime in and share how your hot tub makes a difference in your health, work, life and lives of your family members. Email photos of your own fabulous tubscape.  Recall what happened and how you felt when you finally made your hot tub purchase, perhaps after waiting years to say, “YES.”

With Hot Tub Bliss I want to create hot tub  and sauna evangelists all over the world, one soak or sweat at a time.  Come on in and visit often.

Comments and suggestions on blog posts and for new blog topics are always welcome.

Our new tagline is “Relax for life” because we believe that relaxation is essential for health and long-life.

Hot Tub Bliss: 5 Tips for Setting Up the Perfect Hot Tub Experience

Hot Tub And Share The Sunset With Your Lover Tonight

The best place to share the sunset with your lover is from the hot tub, of course!

I’ll bet you didn’t know that July is “share a sunset with your lover month”.   This month long “event” was created to make couples aware of the need to slow down and take time for each other.  Tonight will be ideal. The heat, high cirrus clouds and slight mugginess should generate a beautiful sunset over the Olympics.

Before you head out to watch the sunset together, why not gather some of the finger foods that go well with soaking in your Hot Spring Spa such as sliced turkey, sliced roast beef, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, shrimp cocktail, some blueberries & strawberries and some bottled water, soda or iced tea. All are available in the produce section or deli case of your local supermarket. Anything that doesn’t require cooking will be welcome!

Sustain your romantic mood while you share a sunset, then twilight, and the appearance of the first stars of the evening, by saying those little words everyone loves to hear, “Let’s go out for dinner”.  Literally. You’ll be outside.

Find some more tips for a romantic evening on our blog post about celebrating the 5 senses in your hot tub.

Exchange neck and shoulder rubs plus foot and hand reflexology with each other to enhance the relaxation. Taking turns helping each other release tension is a great way to prolong the wonderful feeling you’ll have from hot tub soaking!

Thanks to Dr. Melissa Chamberlin for the idea.  Her book, “Share a Sunset with Your Lover” is available through Xlibris.  Dr.  Chamberlin offers practical suggestions for couples NOT therapies.

Sharing a sunset is a simple yet mindful way to experience closeness that’s sometimes hard and sustain in our too busy over-scheduled world.  After all that’s why you purchased a hot tub, isn’t it?  To get away from it all on a daily basis.

Hot Tub Aromatherapy: How to Turn Your Hot Tub Into a Day Spa Treatment

Close your eyes and imagine sinking into your hot tub and melting away stress. Turn the jets on for just the right pressure. They’re like a pair of strong, skilled hands gently but surely massaging away the crick in your neck or the tight band across your shoulders.

Nice, right? But don’t stop there—your hot tub experience is even better when it’s combined with an essential oil that lifts your mood, energizes you or calms you down, based on what you need.

You can  “dial in” your mood based on the oil that you choose because scents you inhale from aromatic essential oils affect the part of the brain that controls memory, emotion and moods says Joseph Feuerstein, MD, director of integrative medicine at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut.  He often uses aromatherapy in his practice, and he recommends it with massage, too. And what gives a great massage? Your Hot Spring Spa, of course.

Try these essential oils when you hot tub:

To Feel Happier. If you could use a mood lift, try a few drops of lavandin oil from a hybrid plant made by crossing true lavender with another variety called spike lavender. Lavandin oil has more powerful antiseptic properties and a sharper aroma than true lavender.

To Get an Energy Boost. Rosemary and peppermint are stimulating and have been shown to have cognitive benefits, enhancing memory, concentration and focus. They also boost circulation, revving you up from the inside out! Combined with the circulation boost you get from using the hot tub, you’ll be energized in no time.

To Reduce Anxiety and Feel Calmer. Whether you in a stressful period in your life or you just need to relax at the end of a long day, use citrus-based essential oils to calm down and enhance relaxation. Try lemon balm, mandarin and bitter orange and orange blossom oils. Chamomile oil also is calming. Just a few drops used in your hot tub help muscles relax.

Since essential oils are strong concentrations distilled from the leaves, bark, roots and other aromatic portions of a plant, they should not be applied directly to the skin. Just sprinkle a few drops into the hot tub. To use on your skin-at your temples, say- you must dilute the essential oil in carrier oil—and then apply. Carrier oils are pressed from seeds, nuts or kernels of plants. To make a hot tub aromatherapy treatment, add five drops of the essential oil to every five teaspoons of the carrier oil.

Find essential oils and carrier oils online and at health-food stores. You’ll only need a few drops of an essential oil or carrier oil in your hot tub to turn your hot tub into an aromatherapy treatment.

Use Your Hot Tub to Relieve Stress in 10 Minutes. Easy & Natural Hot Tub Meditation Works!

10-Minute Mind Spa for the Hot Tub

I’m sure you’ve read all of the news articles on how good meditation is for you. You may even have tried to do it but gave up.  A common pitfall is you can’t “meditate” because you “can’t stop thinking”.

But, really, not thinking is not what hot tub meditation is all about. The point of meditation is to bring you to clarity so you know you are in fact thinking, or planning or being depressed or hungry or angry or happy.

The point is to become mindful not mindless. Most mental activity distracts you from knowing what’s actually going on around you. We’re so often lost in thought or worry, absorbed in the past or future, running our “tapes” over and over.

Meditation slices through the fog and brings you right back home to where you actually are in the here and now. It’s not woo-woo, not esoteric or exotic. It’s brain training. It’s being present or “in the now.”

EASY BEGINNER’S MEDITATION FOR THE HOT TUB

HOW TO SIT. Sitting upright comfortably in the hot tub, scan your body to check that you’re relaxed: your eyes, jaw, shoulders, belly, hands, and legs.  Sit and know that you are sitting.

HOW TO BREATHE. Be aware of your breath moving in and out of your nose. Think “out” when you feel the fall of the exhalation, “in” when you feel the rise or pressure or stretching of the inhalations.

CATCH YOUR MIND WANDERING. When your mind wanders-and it will-acknowledge that you’ve lost contact with your breath, and watch the next inhalation roll in.

CATCH MOMENTS OF AWARENESS. The most important thing to realize is that every moment you notice you’ve wandered off is a moment of being aware, of clarity. That’s what you’re going for. What does it feel like? Within nanoseconds you’ll be thinking again, and becoming aware that you’re thinking, and starting again.

NOTICE THE PRESENT. Practice makes perfect. The more you do it, the more you’ll have the experience of that pause when your mind is actually clear and present.

You can do this anytime, for any length of time (although best not to exceed 20 minutes at 102° when in the hot tub meditating).

Try it for a minute. Try it for ten. Play close attention to a single in-breath, a single out-breath. Every experience of awareness makes the next more likely and refreshes your awareness like nothing else. This enrichment to your life, this deep feeling of calm has to be experienced to be believed. And, it’s even better in the hot tub.
