Hot Tub Weight Loss Secrets

Almost everyone is interested in weight loss at one time or another.  Some of us more often than not.  And, we’re all looking for the easy, no pain way to lose unwanted pounds, right?  A hot tub can help in surprising ways.  Although it’s not a substitute for more exercise and fewer calories, these three tips can help you in your quest for weight loss.

1. Soak in the hot tub before dinner. This tip can really help you avoid calories.  See our post on diminishing your appetite by hot tubbing before a meal from January of last year. How about eating less and getting the benefits of exercise at the same time?  Guaranteed way to eat less: drink an 8oz glass of water then soak in your Hot Spring Spa for 2o minutes before dinner. You will eat far less because your appetite diminishes after hot tub soaking.

2. Lose weight while you sleep! Hot tubbing before bed leads to a better sleep which helps you avoid weight gain! This surprising news was featured in our post on March 11, 2011.  Sleep more and weigh less? Is this true? Sounds like a fairy tale or urban rumor.  But, according to research conducted at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, women who get at least seven hours of shut eye a night are getting beauty rest and more. They’re preventing significant weight gain over time. This study found that the likelihood of major weight gain-33 pounds or more-rose 32% for women who slept only five hours a night. These women were also 15% more likely to become obese than the longer sleepers.

3. Do as the Japanese Do. There’s nothing like yu (hot water) to combat the blues and keep the body warm and supple say the Japanese. It’s a daily custom whose pleasure never dims with time.  But after learning about the Japanese concept of yu  in our post from November 2008 and the concept of considering hot water bathing as a full meal, I’m adding weight loss to my thoughts about hot tubbing! Thinking of hot tubbing as the equivalent of a full meal is a great way to avoid calorie overload.

Soak in Hot Tub Stops Gremlin Attack!

A “gremlin” is that nasty, hateful voice in your head. No matter what you call it, it’s the tape reel of all of your failures and shortcomings past, present and future. Here’s a great story how one woman stopped a “gremlin” attack and found that one of the best ways to reach her personal goals was not through self-discipline but self care. Read this story from “Kick-Butt Laura” on how a soak in her hot tub helped her reach a state of mindfulness that kept her on the path of weight loss.  The hot tub soaked centered her enough to withstand an attack by her own personal “gremlin” .  It was a personal growth moment. Wow!

My challenge is weight loss, and defeating the gremlin that sat on my head and deliberately turned me into a mindless saboteur of my own goals. This usually occurs around ten o’clock at night, often following a perfectly “good” day of exercising and eating healthful foods.

My coach, Meg, quickly helped me ascertain that the real issue was not weight, per se, but rather the effect that my extra pounds have on my ability to fully be the inspiration I want to be for others in my classes and the rest of my life. They keep me from shining as brightly as I otherwise could. And she elicited from me my desire to live a “kick-ass” life, in concert with my true spirit.

On to action steps! I was stumped. This gremlin is big, fat, ugly and seems to be in control when he shows up. Meg encouraged me not to engage in any dialogue with this fellow; he’s quite strong and will win! Instead, we created a plan for me to create a different relationship with the ten o’clock gremlin. We made a plan, with the promise that I would report to her the following morning how it had gone.

That evening, I joyfully went to a dance performance after teaching my class, came home and had a light dinner, then went to the hot tub. I was chuckling to myself at the time that I didn’t need to go to the hot tub;  I was in such a good frame of mind that I knew the gremlin wouldn’t show up. I went only because I had promised to and would have to check in!

It  was wonderful. I was relaxing outside in the cold night air and the swirling heat when a load of  testosterone entered my house in the form of my teenage son, a friend, and my husband, from whom I’ve recently separated. I re-entered the house, refreshed and calm, in time to wish them goodnight as they left for the night.

Had I not been in the hot tub when they arrived, their visit might well have heralded an invitation to the gremlin. I learned that a new practice of self-care, rather than discipline, at the dreaded hour can have remarkable effects.

Onward and upward!

Let your hot tub put you on the path to mindfulness. As we near the end of  National Woman’s Health Week, it’s a good time to think of reducing stress and taking care of our mental health.  Remember: a soak a day keeps the doctor away and can put you on the path to weight loss (if that’s your goal!) and a lifetime of being your best self.
