8 Ways to Improve Your Golf Game While You Hot Tub!

Golfer concentrating on his puttThe weather forecast predicts a high of 81° on Sunday.  Golfers rejoice.  How many times have you been able to bask in the sun in early May as you hit the links?

Did you know that you don’t actually have to be on the golf course to improve your game?!   I’ll bet that you haven’t had much actual golf time since the last fall.  Why not start to practice now to improve your game before you tee off.

Don’t be envious when you watch others on the links. Think hot tub to improve your game.

Here are 7 ways to improve your golf game while you hot tub in good weather or bad.

1. STRENGTHEN YOUR HAND MUSCLES.  Strengthen your wrists and the dozens of tiny muscles in your hands by laying a dishrag (or washcloth) on the edge of the hot tub. Crumple it into a tight ball, letting go and repeating a dozen times with each hand. Do this 3-4 times weekly. What a great way to get a better grip when you’re putting.

2. USE THERAPEUTIC BANDS. These stretchy bands are really great for strengthening and stretching shoulder muscles in ways that expensive gym equipment does not. Shoulder muscles, particularly rotator cuffs are easily injured and will keep you off the course for a long time if they become injured.  A strong chest is needed for an effective swing.

Hold the band overhead with both hands so that you feel some tension in the band. Increase or decrease the tension in the band by gripping it widely or narrowly.  Slowly lower the band behind your back, then up over your head and then down to your belt line. Resistance will increase when the band hits the water giving you a greater workout.

3. SHARPEN YOUR MENTAL FOCUS.  It’s been said that the most important six inches in golf are between the ears.  There are a number of books that help the avid golfer sharpen his/her mental focus and perform better under pressure.  A good book to take to the hot tub (reading it on your Aqua Reader so it won’t get wet) is “Golf is Not A Game of Perfect” by Bob Rotella, PhD, which offers some excellent visualization techniques.  You can also get it as an audio download to play on your ipod. These are techniques that can be done easily while you’re soaking in your Hot Spring Spa and perfectly relaxed.

4. DAYDREAM YOUR PERFECT GAME.  This is the perfect thing to do in the hot tub especially when it’s raining and you can’t get on the links. Daydreaming about the game has been proven to have a positive effect on performance.  Recent studies have shown that while physical practice is the most beneficial, mentally practicing your swing and desired ball flight and outcome is more beneficial than doing nothing at all.

Picture the sound and feel of solid contact from the tee, the flight of the drive, the club you choose for your approach shot, the contour of the green, etc. Play the first several holes in your mind until you start to lose focus.

5. THINK IT THROUGH. Rehearse all scenarios in your mind, so you’ll have a plan of action no matter what happens. Studies have shown that seeing a reminder of past success leads to better performance.

Dr. Jules Pretty, at the Center for Environment and Society in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Essex, in England makes a strong case for “being in nature”.  Irrespective of where we come from in the world, it seems that the presence of living things makes us feel good.

There are three levels of engagement with nature he says.

*The first is passive viewing of nature, as through a window, or in a book, on television or in a painting.

*The second is being in the presence of nearby nature, which is incidental to some other activity, such as walking or cycling to work, or reading on a garden seat, and (we’ve added this one) soaking in a hot tub outdoors.

*The third level is active participation and involvement with nature, such as gardening, hiking or running.

There is now strong evidence that all these levels deliver mental health benefits. The levels with the most involvement deliver the most benefits.

A recent survey of our Olympic Hot Tub Company Hot Spring Spa owners echoed Dr. Pretty’s research  regarding to his second point of engagement with nature. It’s true we don’t have credentials in counseling, we just sell hot tubs which are a great invention for a happy marriage. Many couples say it’s a “must have” to keep romance and closeness alive.

We do know from 36 years of experience and close to 19,000 hot tub sales that hot tubbing is a great way to live “happily ever after. “  This being Couples Appreciation Month, I wanted to share some tips about hot tubbing and relationship building that our customers have shared with us.

Do you know what all happy and healthy marriages have in common? In every one of them you will find two people committed to making each other happy.

The old saw “marriage is a 50/50 proposition” is way out of date. Marriage is 100/100.  We live in very selfish times. Pop-psychology messages are everywhere in the media encouraging us to love ourselves, do right by ourselves, and generally please ourselves first.

If you really want a happy marriage, you can’t buy into self-centered thinking. Instead, try these 6 time-tested techniques and experience the happiness, peace, and tranquility of a healthy marriage with more than a little help from your hot tub!

1. Make time for each other.   It’s so easy in our hyper-busy modern lifestyles to forget to set aside a little time to enjoy each others company.  Start a weekly tradition of setting a date for the two of you to be together doing something you both enjoy.  6. Scientific researchers are confirming what hot tub users have known for years: Soaking or exercising in water is good for blood, bones, brain, muscles, joints, kidneys and other physical systems because its special properties offer a different experience from the dry life.

Dr. Bruce Becker, Director of Aquatic Health Benefit Research at the National Swimming Pool Foundation,  and advocate of water therapy, compiled a catalog of  new studies and yet-to-be studied positive effects in the April 2013 edition of Aqua magazine. Becker says that some medical professionals such as physical therapists and orthopedists are becoming more aware of the benefits, although doctors who specialize in the heart and respiration are not yet as well informed. A project in China to build more rehabilitation hospitals includes water therapy facilities for the patients.

Many of the advantages flow from the fact that water is denser than the human body, which is why you float – you actually weigh less – in the tub. Among other things, that means better results with less impact for people with joint problems who exercise in water.

Even without exercise, just sitting or reclining in the tub is good for you. The density of the water puts pressure on your skin and the blood vessels underneath, pushing blood into your chest and helping the blood vessels relax. That means there’s more blood for your heart to pump with each contraction, which improves circulation more efficiently than increasing the heart rate.

More blood in the chest cavity plus the pressure of water also means you’re doing 60 percent more work to fill your lungs with air, which helps strengthen your breathing muscles and build endurance. That’s why track athletes see improvement in their performance after they spent time in the water.

Water conducts heat and cold four times as much as your body and 25 times as much as air, which is why 72-degree water feels much colder than 72-degree air. That means you can increase or decrease the blood flow to different parts of the body more effectively with water, just as you might use ice to reduce swelling.

Studies have shown that immersion in neutral or warm water reduces blood pressure, although the long-term effects have not yet been researched. Some studies show dramatic improvement after aquatic therapy for patients with mild to moderate heart failure. Also aquatic exercises increase muscle blood flow.

Becker believes exercise in water could delay the body’s automatic response to fatigue, which triggers moving blood from extremities, although the hypothesis has not yet been studied. Also, time in the tub might lubricate the joints by increasing synovial fluid production, which would explain the improvement that arthritis patients report.

Soaking, as you’ve probably noticed, improves kidney efficiency by increasing renal blood flow and altering renal hormones. More blood flow to the brain increases relaxation and reduces pain sensation, and it might even improve balance and sleep patterns.

While more research is needed in some specific areas, the evidence is that soaking or exercising in the hot tub can benefit everyone from elite athletes to people with chronic diseases. Tubbing makes you feel good all over, inside and out.

Hot Tub Filters-10 Things You Must Know to Keep Your Hot Tub Water Clean & Safe

Long-lasting, effective filters make your hot tub soak pure pleasure.

Hot tub filters are your friend.

They keep the bad stuff out of the water so you and your tub stay healthy.

They work hard. If you help them, they can even cut down how often you have to drain and fill your hot tub.

Here’s what to do to keep filters working properly and your eater clean:

1.    SWITCH.  Right now, get on the SilkBalance program to maintain your hot tub water and keep filters in their best working order.

2.   ADD AFTER SOAKING. Every time you get out of the hot tub, add SeaKlear Shock and run the jets for 10 minutes. Once a week, add SeaKlear Sanitizing Granules.

3.   HIGH PRESSURE WASH. Every four weeks, rinse filters using the high-pressure nozzle on your garden hose – best with a Water Wand hose attachment.  Don’t forget to unplug the hot tub, or turn off the breakers on 220v models, before removing the filters!

4.  CLEAN. At least once a month, give the filters a thorough cleaning. Always clean when you drain and refill the hot tub for best water quality. To clean, spray with Seaklear Spa Filter Cleaner. Even filters that look clean can be clogged enough to cause flow and heater problems. You need dishwasher detergent or filter cleaner for a thorough cleaning that strips out oils and fine particles trapped in the pleats.

IMPORTANT: With the advent of  SeaKlear’s new, better filter cleaner we recommend its use rather than putting your filters in the dishwasher. We no longer recommend filter cleaning in your dishwasher.

5.  RETURN PROPERLY. When you return the clean filters to the compartment, make sure that fit properly so 100% of the flowing water is filtered.

6.  SANITIZE.  Always maintain proper water  chemistry.   Filters are the first step to clean water, but they do not kill bacteria.

7.  EXTRA HELP.  Use Scumbugs in your hot tub to absorb oils, eliminate the scum line and  improve  filter effectiveness.

8.  TWO SETS ARE BETTER THAN ONE.  Consider having two sets of  filters, so one can be cleaning the hot tub while the other is getting a deep cleaning in Seaklear Filter Cleaner Soak.  Now’s a good time to purchase another set while all Hot Spring filters are on sale.

9. RINSE OFF.  Rinse off before using the hot tub to leave less work for the filters and make water care much easier.

 10.  BETTER FILTRATION.  Switch to TRI-X filters-exclusive to Hot Spring Spas. A TRI-X filter   filters 10 times more gallons per square foot than other filters and it provides over twice the filtration area of a standard filter – 65 square feet compared to 30 square feet. The TRI-X filter works not only by using the element’s surface area but also by using the media’s depth.  With regular cleaning, TRI-X filters should last twice as long as regular filters.
